Editorial Reviews

2012 release from the Metal upstarts. Never before has a band generated such a huge buzz on the strength of a single demo release. With only a three-song self-released cassette to their name, Little Rock, Arkansas's Pallbearer have risen through the ranks of the Doom Metal scene with unprecedented speed. The group's sound recalls classic traditional Heavy Metal, taking cues not only from legendary Doom bands like Candlemass, Trouble and Warning, but also from '70s Prog and Hard Rock.

Doomsters have long sung the praises of various sludge-o-matic doom bands like Black Sabbath, the granddaddy of doom, Candlemass, perhaps Triptykon and definitely Electric Wizard. With tempos and ridiculously downtuned guitars, doom has filled the emotional space where despair, longing, and mythology love to hang out.
Now we travel to Little Rock, Arkansas. That's right. Little Rock, right smack dab in the middle of Arkansas, which boasts a bunch of musical icons who were born here (I'm from Arkansas) and made the big-time, most notably Glen Campbell and the irrepressible Johnny Cash, the man in black himself. Fortunately there is a very healthy local rock scene in Little Rock and upstate in Fayetteville, home of the University of Arkansas. There's much more than corn pone country and folk music going on. If bands like Rwake and Pallbearer continue to garner attention and release superb albums, Little Rock could gain a new reputation as a doom city, much in the vein of Tampa being the death metal capital. Pallbearer are one of the best doom bands out there, and this debut is fantastic.
What sets "Sorrow and Extinction" apart from the other bands is the vocals of Brett Alexander, who sings in a beautifully clear voice, adding a much appreciated element to the guitars that sound like they were recorded at the La Brea tarpits. With this combination, the music becomes more than just morbidly slow tempos and run of the mill riffage. They take on a real sense of sadness and melancholy that manages to be as beautiful at times as it is heavy. And make no mistake: this album is as heavy as doom can get. But as in its final track, we see possibly the most melodic moments that have ever been recorded in this genre. I expect this band to grow exponentially, and look forward to what they can do next time around. One of the front runners for 2012's album of the year.

I'll say this up front - metal is not the primary genre of music I listen to. Don't get me wrong, this isn't my first foray into the genre, but I also don't wake up blasting Meshuggah. So, with that in mind

Pallbearer's Sorrow and Extinction is one of the finest metal albums I have heard in some time. I tend to think a lot of metal is gaudy and overdone, but this is refined and to-the-point, never wasting a note or filling time with worthless growling. What really sets this album apart is the great tone that Pallbearer has found - wonderfully crunchy guitar, beautiful drumming, and a great use of ensemble to bring you an album that is surprisingly "heavy" in tone, but is never rushed. In fact, they lumber through most of the album, in such a way it's almost a slow groove. Highly recommend

While doom metal acts have proliferated in the past few years not many have written entire albums as good as Sorrow & Extinction.

The entire vibe of the album, from the haunting vocals, to the ponderous riffs, repeated as a theme throughout the work, the album lives up to its name and its genre.

The album is meant to be listened to as a whole, in order, not on shuffle, though the songs stand alone, you don't get the full effect.

The vocals are sung, in a fairly unique style, as the music pounds along at glacial pace in the background.

If you are looking for sonic or tempo variety, you won't find much of that here. If you are looking for a massive album of some of the finest doom made recently, give this a listen.

I don't care how hipster nor how bland live they are. What matteer is that this album rocks!

One of the beat US (I guess traditional) doom releases in years. The songs are long but they flow great and are not tiresome at all, which often happens to be the case wiht lengthy songs.

Production is clear and really suits the general atmosphere of the album.

Disregard the band image and press hype they received, this is a genuinely great metal/rock album so give it a try.

This album is one you can put on and not think for a second about changing it or skipping anything. Super long songs that I can't even begin to explain. If you are thinking about buying it just stop and do it. This is probably the best album I've bought this year.

Seminal record by Pallbearer. This great sounding double vinyl edition does the album justice, sounding better than the mp3 version.

Sorrow And Extinction is my second favorite Pallbearer album. But I can't listen to what I just purchased because Amazon ruins it by forcing you to download their garbage Amazon Music app in order to download any album you purchase. You used to be able to just download it from the website, but now they force their horrible music app on you just to download an album that you paid for, and then they try and bully you into paying for their horrible music service. It keeps getting worse and worse. Hopefully the last album I have to purchase from Amazon. Amazon is an evil, data harvesting, manipulative corporate behemoth cancer of society.

Parfait, pour un prix largement abordable. Cependant, rentrer les vinyles est difficile au début (la pochette semble un peu serrée).

This album is a classic already. Months later I'm still listening to it front to back, and it's a great experience every time. It really sets a mood and takes you into another world for an extended period of time. Easy to get lost in, in a good way. If you like your musical journey slow and somber, this is the ticket.

Yes, at last, a true, metallic doom creation. Slow, heavy, atmospheric. Sorrowful and epic at the same time. A must buy for the fans of the slow paced metal.
