This game cheated me
1 out of 5 stars
This game cheated me
This game just cheated me. It actually started using my castle as a diagonal piece to capture my queen who had checkmate the king. It was totally ridiculous. I am attaching a photo. I am really disturbed by this and would appreciaute an explanation. I play it on my Fire tablet but i am sending this message via my iphone. I am so angry at you for cheating me iut of a hard fought win.

I'm a total beginner and learning to play after making a promise to a family member to learn during Covid, so I could play with them as a result of the shut down. While they were trying to teach me, I was getting more frustrated and decided I needed to play on my own until I learned and could remember the various pieces and the moves each could or couldn't make.

I looked through a bunch of online chess games, read reviews, watched chess being played on YouTube, etc. Found this download, read the reviews, and concluded I'd give this specific one a try. I wasn't looking for "all the bells and whistles" version or one that kept throwing ads up and creating distractions. I simply wanted to learn to play chess. That is what this one does, it helps you learn to play chess, at your speed, with one or more players, with a timer showing the length of time of each move, and at a level of difficulty desired.

The visuals are excellent, and learning to play is fun. You learn as you go and you can play, by yourself (with the computer), or with another player, making it even more interesting, once you get the hang of it. While I always thought learning to play chess was 'difficult', with this game I discovered with time, patience, and a willingness to develop new memory skills (different pieces move differently in direction, number of spaces, etc.), learning to play chess can be fun when you get over the fear of making mistakes and not being "out to win" every time. I highly recommend this particular version of CHESS.
AND SO FAR, NO AD POP-UPS, which makes it even better!

Chess is a game of mental concentration and mental stimulation so it's a great game for young and old alike, especially when people are being constantly distracted by action video games. Thanks for creating this version.

The program is strong enough for me, an average, casual player, and weak enough to give a beginner a good winning chance. You can even undo poor moves. The pieces are easy to differentiate and the color of the pieces is not lost in the color of the squares. The screen is 2-D, and that is a good thing given the relatively small, 3.5" playing area. It would be nice if a move list or replay option was available in order to examine a finished game (you can "undo" an entire game, and therefore write it down, as long as the final move has not been made), but this would be a tedious process. It would also be nice if the difficulty slide bar showed a numeric value. This would benefit players who want to alter the difficulty incrementally. Overall, this is a fun and easy to use program.

Today it skipped a pawn six squares down a file and told me I was in check! I undid and tried a different move, and it did the same thing. Very strange.

I see a number of commentators say it won't let them castle. Assuming it is not for technical reasons (king has moved previously, castling across or while in check, etc) I did discover that it allows the player to castle IF you move the king to its destination square FIRST. It moves the rook automatically once you do.

I usually set the level slightly above the middle; I don't mind losing, but I'm neither a Master nor a masochist. I win about half the time, so I'm going to say that's probably in the "Expert" range. It would be nice if there were some marks calibrated on the skill level so you can try to match up with your USCF rating. I can't say how helpful this is for novice or beginning players. When I stopped playing, my rating was in the 1600s and it's a challenge.

It has a tendency to play some really funky moves and openings. For example it starts pushing rooks' pawns in the first few moves and plays a very active king. I've probably played about 50 games, and the computer has moved the king in the first 10 moves at least 90% of the time. I can count the number of times it has castled on one hand - because having moved the king it can't.

It seems odd that the program has so little interest in the center. It's been decades since I played competitively, though, so these may reflect modern chess theory. They are definitely out of the norm for what I remember.

In defense, it does not claim to be a chess tutorial. Nor does it require you be connected to the web so as to play against a live opponent. It's just a handy little time killer and I have had to learn responses to unusual or unexpected openings and defenses. As one of my teachers used to say, "Free is the best money can buy," so despite my complaints this is worth downloading.
