Missile Defender is basically a remake of Missile Command on the old school Atari game system or arcade machines. The concept is simple: shoot your missiles to destroy incoming missiles before they destroy your city. There are two sizes of enemy missiles: standard and oh-my-god-watch-out. Luckily the latter are larger targets and rarely get through your defenses.

At first the game is fairly easy. Enemy missiles are slow. You just tap your screen a short distance ahead of them and they explode in your blast radius. The objective is to use your blast radius more than scoring a direct missile to missile collision. My first run through on this game was a little sloppier than it should have been, but my second run through I had a better grasp on timing and positioning my blasts that I scored mostly perfect round through level 25.

As you progress through the levels, the missiles get faster. A lot faster. Some fly off in unexpected direction. The bigger, deadlier missiles appear more frequently, and I'm fairly certain missile quantity increases.

Fortunately, you can upgrade your armaments as you go along. You can increase missile speed, missile quantity, blast radius, and blast duration each to level 5. If you score mostly perfects and don't have to waste your points on building repairs, scoring these boosts rolls along at a steady pace. I'd recommend increasing missile speed first. It helps. I went speed > radius > duration > quantity until they were all level 2, then repeated for all 5 levels. Worked well for me. You could probably hold off on quantity a bit. Unless you're just randomly tapping the screen all over in a 'hope you hit something' style approach, you probably won't run low on missiles. You will need to upgrade but quantity isn't the most important boost.

At times the game can be a little nerve-racking. It's hard to pay attention to everything going on once the speed and quantity of incoming missiles really gets going. Missiles start sneaking by. Buildings are destroyed. By this point I'd already upgraded everything to maximum, so I could just use my points to rebuild, but as levels increase, building costs increase, so losing is inevitable. That's how these types of games work though. It's definitely high on replay value, as you try to best your score.

The gameplay is alright. Additionally the difficulty in playing feels just about right. However the app requires you to make in app purchases to really get anywhere. They offer a point system to upgrade your stats, however this ability to aquire points in game is very slow and not well balanced. Another words they designed it is such that you need to buy points to get anywhere in the game. While I expect this of a free game, having a paid app do this seems counterintuitive. When I purchase an app I expect to get it in full and not be required to make additional purchases to get the full gameplay.

It's an okay game if 2-D, stylized, sparse graphics are appealing to you. It many ways it's closer to the original Missile Command (its inspiration) than the more elaborate remakes but fact is that there ARE better remakes for Android tablets. My favorite (I am rating it 'awesome') happens to be Warheads as a paid game or you may try before you buy by downloading Warheads FREE.

These being said, Missile Defender is a decent game. It's responsive to touch and allows you to budget your post-bombardment earnings between rebuilding those apartment buildings and upgrading your anti-missile defenses which is fine but I can't see that it's the kind of game that would make me want to play it over and over again.

Amazon's rating for "it's Okay" is 3 stars so three stars it gets for a decent, bug-free, tablet-optimized game.

I really enjoy playing Missle Defender. The game plays great on my tablet. The touch screen controls are flawless. You will never miss a shot due to lack of control. The graphics are nice too look at but a little plain overall. The sound could use some improvement as there is no music during gameplay and most of the sound effects that are there are just blips, bleeps and small explosions. The developer may have designed it this way to maintain the authentic retro feel but it would be nice to have some updated sounds and music. The game does start out a little too easy and it isnt until you reach the 9th or 10th stage where the game offers some challenge. After each round based on how well you did you will earn points that can be used to upgrade your weapons. I really liked this touch and it does add some depth to the game.

Overall this is a 4 star game for me and I think just about everyone can have some real fun playing this game.

This game is interesting and definitely a step up from the original Missile Command. What you'll notice, right away, is that when you survive a round, you'll receive the chance to upgrade your missile's features, however, it's not really enough to satisfy. After several rounds of repairing damaged buildings and upgrading your missile's features, you'll reach the limit and from there on, it's nothing more than round after round of repitition. I do regret buying the game ( not that it hurt my wallet too much ) because it's rather shallow. I recommend some kind of story, several different levels with a variety of tasks and several more upgrades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Missile I'll miss
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 9, 2015
Great fun tapping game. Just a little bit like the "Missile Command" from waaaay back in the day (probably much before your time, but well within my own when I am being honest), your job is to save the city from falling bombs and flying saucer attack.
Tapping the incoming nukes launches your missiles... but remember to always aim for where the attacking projectiles WILL BE, as your defence response needs to travel to the spot.
