Academy Award winners Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts come together for a romantic and optimistic comedy about how it’s never too late to reinvent yourself. When he suddenly finds himself without his long-standing blue-collar job, Larry Crowne (Hanks) enrolls at his local college to start over. There, he becomes part of an eclectic community of students and develops a crush on his teacher (Roberts). Ok, we are all grateful about it not being another Matrix sequel, right? I mean, did anyone understand that last one? I stayed after the credits hoping that a final scene would make sense of the preceding 90 minutes, but that just didn't happen.

So. Back to Larry Crowne. This movie may not appeal to you if you've never been screwed over by incompetent and/or brutish managers. Or if you have never had to walk away from a major purchase, like a house or a car. Or if you have never had to start your education all over again at a college where everyone around you looks like their 12. Or if you liked any of the Anchorman movies. Seriously. What, there are like two sequels to that now? Three? Who is watching those movies? I mean, besides people on planes that (apparently) have no parachutes. On the other hand, The Other Guys which also starred Will Ferrell made me laugh so hard I inhaled my popcorn. But just at the part where they talked about lions and tunas. The rest was embarrassingly puerile and I refused to admit that I liked the movie to anyone because of it. Well, except for this review. And the people on my commute in the morning. Also, the people in line at the last Marvel movie. Except for those people, and this review, I have never admitted it to anyone. And if you see it, you have my permission to also hide the fact that there were parts that had you stifling loud guffaws.

    Moving on.

--- Semi weakish spoiler alerts ---

Larry Crowne was unrealistic in that hot chicks just don't take over the lives of middle-aged men even if they both attend the same community college (take over in a non-sexual way, for all of you out there thinking perv-y thoughts - and you know who you are). However, this movie makes you think that they could. Or that they should. Or something. I am a not-so-young woman, and I still think that maybe they should after seeing this movie. It would do them both some good, I say.

On the other hand, this movie was realistic in that there are a lot of downsizing nowadays, a lot of realistic budgeting that may or may not include moving out of one's house, and a lot of rewriting of one's education so that one can realistically become employed again. All of that reality makes one think. And forcing one to think is a moral imperative for a movie that doesn't involve CGI or Mel Gibson's bare bottom, the early years.

After seeing this (or what the heck, before seeing this, whichever is your preference), I also recommend The Answer Man with Jeff Daniels. Normally, I think the use of swear words is a cheat in movies. They say to me "Hey, let's not go to the effort of creating dialog to indicate that this character is street savvy and / or a rebel, let's just have them say f-bomb a lot." But in The Answer Man, there is an actual point to swear word usage and it was rather cleverly done. My mother, who will turn off movies if there is too much swearing, enjoyed The Answer Man greatly, so... I like it, and my mom liked it. Thus, by the transitive rule of mom-always-knows-best, you'll like it too. And Larry Crowne, as well. This movie here, that I am reviewing. Both. That one and this one. Or either. Also, the Lion-Tuna scene in The Other Guys. That as well. But not the rest of the movie. Although there are bits and pieces here and there, so maybe you might want to watch it and just fast forward when it comes to parts that would make even a 13 year old boy wretch. Yes. Those two movies, and that scene. And then the rest of that movie, minus the blech.

You should probably write all of this down before you forget it. Otherwise, you might have to read this review again. And frankly, I don't think either one of us could take it if you had to read it again. Seriously. I am openly weeping.

    We love the movie
  • Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2013
Everytime I think Tom Hanks just cannot be everyman and be THAT GREAT of an actor (because I do remember the Money Pit and Joe Vs the Volcano), and yet!!!! I love everything about this movie. I was laid off from my good paying job and had to take a much lower paying job a few months before this movie came out. So I recognize the desperation and the heartbreak of changing a life and lifestyle you thought was the bedrock of your existence. Tom Hanks plays that convincingly. I love how Larry loves his job and has such a bright outlook on life and even though he suffered a brief bout of self pity and depression, he rallied and started over. Starting over is SCARY. The first time I watched it I thought Julia Roberts was such a downer, and I realized she had her own bedrock cracked (by her career and husband choices) she just needed Larry to come in to her life and show her how to embrace the starting over. I loved Gugu Mbatha Raw as Talia. She is a ray of bright energy that you cannot but help loving. I loved Wilmer Valderama, patience of a saint-like being. Cedric the Entertainer and Taraji P Hall were excellent if eccentric neighbors, and all the other supporting characters were spot on. I watched Hanks in The Terminal and Cast Away. This man can act opposite a turnip (think soccer ball) and make you root for him every time. I cannot look away from his performances. Always very nuanced and never flashy or overacted. Tom Hanks for PRESIDENT!!! Well, him or Meryl Streep (anyone see Mama Mia and Julie and Julia and The Iron Lady ? She can do anything too)!

Quite why the critics slated this, is probably because they didn't get it. I wasn't sure myself until I watched it a second time. And maybe that's the trick.
The acting as you would expect from Hanks and Roberts, is first class, but credit too to the supporting cast. They played it perfectly.
The bottom line is that this is a story of second chances, and perhaps one of observing all that surrounds you when you start over again in your mid-life. And if you don't know what I mean by that, ask someone who went back to college ten or more years after they left it, and preferably someone who has a failed marriage behind them too.
As for the closing sequence, maybe that could have been different, but don't get hung up on it. It's just two middle-aged people reliving their school days and in that, the movie is near perfect.

It's 2022 and this is my first time watching this movie. Somehow this movie never entered my radar until now. Movies nowadays are either steering very closely to NC-17 or just plain a waste of one's life to watch. This movie has a little bit of everything with a great cast. The story line brings to light the realities of life that each of us may have experienced to some degree at one time or another. Sometimes life doesn't go as you planned and everything seems to fall apart all at once. Though if you're a good person life has a way of shaking things up, coming full circle, and bringing you closer to the kind of life you really deserve.

Everything about this movie is so soft and gentle and laid back. However, it demonstrates a man going about changing his life with tons of grit, and at the same time being easygoing about it. Loved the humour and the acting. Even the smaller roles are interesting and funny. Simply loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un film qui met de bonne humeur
Reviewed in France on April 19, 2018
