The Potty Mouth at the Table Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 335 ratings

From the celebrated author best known for the Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club and described as “the funniest writer in the solar system” (The Miami Herald) comes a new laugh-out-loud collection of essays on rudeness.

Pinterest. Foodies. Anne Frank’s underwear. New York Times bestselling author Laurie Notaro—rightfully hailed as “the funniest writer in the solar system” (The Miami Herald)—spares nothing and no one, least of all herself, in this uproarious new collection of essays on rudeness. With the sardonic, self-deprecating wit that makes us all feel a little better about ourselves for identifying with her, Laurie explores her recent misadventures and explains why it’s not her who is nuts, it’s them (and okay, sometimes it’s her too).

Whether confessing that her obsession with buying fabric has reached junior hoarder status or mistaking a friend’s heinous tattoo as temporary, Laurie puts her unique spin—sometimes bizarre, always entertaining—on the many perils of modern living in a mannerless society. From shuddering at the graphic Harry Potter erotica conjured up at a writer’s group to lamenting the sudden ubiquity of quinoa (“It looks like larvae no matter how you cook it”),
The Potty Mouth at the Table is whip-smart, unpredictable, and hilarious. In other words, irresistibly Laurie.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Notaro is either the best friend helping to ward off fashion faux pas and warn of impending dating disasters, or the person banned from entering the house even if she was bearing a giant Publisher’s Clearing House check. Sly, snarky, and scornful, Notaro doesn’t suffer fools gladly, but she’d also be the first one to include herself in that category. As she casts her raucously jaundiced eye upon such immediately recognizable contemporary danger zones as the sanctity of one’s personal care products or the pretentiousness of Food Network devotees, Notaro also brings any collateral shame, confusion, and embarrassment right to her own doorstep. Though her husband, mother, siblings, and friends are all foils for her acerbic wit and the unwitting source of much merriment, Notaro selflessly saves her most caustic remarks for her own wacky weaknesses. A wry observer and ribald commentator, Notaro brandishes her zesty brand of irreverent humor like a Day-Glo badge of courage. --Carol Haggas

Caution!
Caution: this is a book that may cause fellow passengers on the bus to avoid you. I read this book on my commutes to and from work. I noticed several people staring and then inching away from me when I began to laugh hysterically. Laurie is one of my favorite essayists. This book is true to form…it had me laughing in the aisles and obnoxiously reading passages to my husband and coworkers. Love it! By the way...to all of the Yelpers Elite...this review is not fake.

    Dear Laurie,

I have to apologize. After ordering all your books a few years back and devoring them, I was ecstatic to PRE ordered this book, thinking to myself that I would hole up somewhere and read the entire thing in one night...I must've forgotten that I had two demons, that at the time of said order, the drama queen was 2 years old and the ADHD demon spawn was 4 and three quarters years old.

I was very mistaken to think I'd have the time or even the quiet needed to dissappear into this book.

That being said, thank you for the many peaceful nights, ALONE, where the only sound was my laughter echoing in the bathroom as I try not to drown the perfect copy of this book in my tub.

Your essays lend themselves to put one's self inside the mind (and life moments) of your awesomely hilarious life.

So, buzz off nay sayers, this book is just what you need in your life...even if it takes you over 2 years to finsh it.

I can't get enough of Laurie's funny stories. It's been very fun to read her books over the years. The stories have changed a little bit, now that she's a little older, and I'm older now, too, so it's fun to read about the new adventures of Laurie, her husband, her doggie, and her family. I could have absolutely used more Mom stories, and this book doesn't have as many as prior books, but one chapter explains that pretty well. :) I still laughed out loud several times, and can't wait for the next book!

I absolutely loved this book. I am a HUGE Laurie Notaro fan! HUGE! (Well, ok, I am not skinny, but not physically "huge either, you know what I mean!) I have read all of her books and am eagerly anticipating her next book - she is working on another right?? I am, and will always be, a true Idiot Girl.

Laurie Notaro writes as though she is speaking to you. It's a style that I love reading. I have nothing bad to say about the book, except I finished reading it and need more. I laughed. I related to many of her experiences in the book. I would very highly recommend it to anyone who wants light reading with real-life humorous situations.

I am normally a HUGE fan of Laurie Notaro's work. I have loved all of her books and find her to be very funny. However this book was a bit of a let down. Most of the stories are centered around her adventures in traveling or better put bad stuff that happens when traveling. Some interesting, none really funny. Included in the book are essays of rants about about foodies, people who pin food in Pinterest, and strange trends in the culinary world. None of these essays I found funny or even remotely interesting. In fact the book came off as one long complaint. I gave the book 3 stars because it was not terrible but it was not great either.

Even the title made me laugh...add that to "things my mom says," and this one made me feel related.

Though my mom is gone now, she was, while living, fodder for many blogs I wrote. When I blogged...before the site started going all wonky and those of us of a certain genre (passed and grasped English, didn't post a constant stream of selfies, had moms who would watch Lawrence Welk on the living room television with the volume set on high, while our dad sat in the bedroom at the opposite end of the hallway watching but unable to see while barely able to hear some of, name that WWII movie, with the volume on high, while my brother and I sequestered ourselves into the office/guestroom #1...laughing til we wept. And once, upon hearing the even then, long deceased Mr. Welk introducing his orchestra playing a new song by John-ah Lennon-ah, "Hey-ah Jude-ah," we rushed outside to hide our growing guffaws, only to realize that, even at her perceived low volume, we could hear Mr. Welk's orchestra through a closed window. And we peeked through the window to see mom tapping her slippered foot while her head nodded up and down like the dogs seen on the front or back dashboard shelf during the 60's and 70's.

I've taken up too much space. Just buy it. Laurie's mom is funnier than mine was.

Another great book by Laurie Notaro. I have to admit not as funny as previous books but still good! A few of the stories just seemed to have not been as funny and I had hoped and yet her first story had me in tears of laughter. She will always be one of favorites!

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to admit that I haven been a certificate-bearing member of the Idiot Girls for a VERY long time. That being said, I have always enjoyed all of Laurie's books, and The Potty Mouth at the Table did not disappoint. This book made me laugh out loud on many occasions, which is a normal reaction to Laurie Notaro's writing. Laurie demonstrates that she is not only is one funny lady, but also makes you FEEL....just read the last piece. Bottom line is this: Do NOT pass this book without buying and reading it. You WILL regret it if you do. IMHO, Laurie Notaro is right up there with Stephen King and David Sedaris as one of my all-time favorite authors.

I am a third of the way through this book and so far it has proven to be a great companion. Every once in a while it'll bring out a chuckle out loud. The chapters are not linked yet her style is one worthy of admiration. It is one of those books that leaves curious into meeting the author over a few cups of coffee.
