About the author

Andrew Murray was a much loved Pastor, appreciated speaker at religious conventions, and a much read writer of devotionally-oriented Christian publications in his day. His popularity continues to this day.
Andrew Murray was born in 1828 in Graff Reinet, South Africa. He was the second child of Andrew Murray Sr. (1784-1886) who was a Scottish Presbyterian serving the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa. Andrew’s mother, Maria Susanna Stegman, was of French Huguenot and German Lutheran descent. Murray had an incredible Christian heritage growing up. His father, Andrew Murray, Sr. was a Scottish pioneer minister and evangelical leader of South Africa. He was born into a pious Aberdeenshire family and studied at Aberdeen University, where he felt called to be a missionary to Newfoundland.
Murray helped to found what is now the University College of the Orange Free State, and the Stellenbosch Seminary He served as Moderator of the Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church and was president of both the YMCA (1865) and the South Africa General Mission (1888-1917), now the Africa Evangelical Fellowship.
He was one of the chief promoters of the call to missions in South Africa. This led to the Dutch Reformed Church missions to blacks in the Transvaal and Malawi. Apart from his evangelistic tours in South Africa, he spoke at the Keswick and Northfield Conventions in 1895, making a great impression upon his British and American audiences. For his contribution to world missions, he was given an honorary doctorate by the universities of Aberdeen (1898) and Cape of Good Hope (1907).
Murray pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860. In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton.
Some of his popular writings include:
The Spiritual Life
The Master’s Indwelling
The Power of the Blood of Christ
The Prayer Life
Abide in Christ
The Ministry of Intercession
Absolute Surrender
Be Perfect
Divine Healing

- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2024It is so hard to think that this type of revelation was being preached and taught over 120 years ago. It is astounding to think how far we have gone from such life changing truths.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2023Brother Andrew Murray had a deep walk with Christ. He had great knowledge of His heart and His Word. The first portion of the Book is a direct read through the Book of Hebrews - the rest expounds on how to be a servant with a son's heart. Reading this book (its long but oh so worth it) it will take you to deeper places in your walk them most could imagine. A true blessing and an A+++ read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2024Great insight into the workings of Jesus in our lives. Christ in you and the hope of glory. Grab hold spiritually and rest in righteousness, peace and joy
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2024Just now, at this second, finished the book. My head is spinning. Now at 63 years of age, I have seen and experienced a great deal in the church. I’ve heard many teachings, sermons and exegesis on Scripture. Never before have I read anything close to this. Finishing the Kindle version, I’m ordering the hard copy for my library. I will go through this teaching again and again, the Lord willing. Next to the Bible, this will be the #1 book in your library, I can assure you.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2013"We have seen that the two compartments of the tabernacle represent two degrees of nearness to God, two dispensations of God's grace, or two stages in the Christian life, a lower and a higher. Into the Holy Place every priest might come daily to do there the service God had appointed. Into the Most Holy he might not enter till Christ had opened it for all believers. Many believers never in experience enter into this life of the inner sanctuary, the more complete and abiding nearness to God. They have, in the outer court, seen the alter, and received the pardon of sin;they have entered upon the service of God,they seek to do His will, but the joy of His presence as their abiding portion they know not. And very often they do not know that there is a better life, that there is an entering within the veil,a real dwelling in the secret of God's presence; the need that the Holy Spirit signify to them, work in them the conviction that to them the way into the Holiest hath not yet been manifest."
This is just one little quote from this powerful and life changing book by Andrew Murray. If you are longing for that more "abundant life" that living within the veil, a real dwelling in the secret of God's presence, i urge you to get this book. Jesus has entered in for us,let Andrew Murray teach you from the book of Hebrews how you are to enter in also.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2019My goal in 2019 has been to memorize the book of Hebrews and I asked a Godly friend for her recommended commentary on the book. This is the perfect companion to reading and understanding the complete sufficiency of Christ in the book of Hebrews! Each chapter is short enough to be read as a devotional and gives order to Paul’s thoughts of how we can live in the reality of God’s presence through the sacrifice of Christ as a better way than the blood of bulls and goats offered in the OT. This is a rich spiritual and practical book to help one grow in their faith and walk in victory through all that Christ has done and opened for us! I highly recommend this book as a companion to the inspired Word of God.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2019I have never studied the book of Hebrews in such a coherent, precise, presentation. I found it very important to study every scripture quoted as a cross reference for what was being said. This is the 10th book I have read from Andrew Murray and find the topics he teaches are so important today. It is my opinion that the topics that I have read are essential reading for every discipleship class and every pulpit. Thank you for making Andrew Murray's books available.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2016Not just a classic Andrew Murray work, but truly inspired to open to us this gift from God of His Son, both to save us and transform us. How can the church be so dead with a book like Hebrews to clear the way to all God, for God and by God in our new lives in Christ? We only hear the saving half of the Gospel today, and many times not even that. His death is our death and His life is our life is forgotten. The only thing that keeps this particular kindle version from 5 stars are the multitude of typos. But it is easy to read through them, catching them and replacing the correct word as your read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking Book
I bought this book as a I rally appreciate Andrew Murray's scholarship, I don't agree with all he says, but the depth, and clarity he gives to this Epistle helps you to get more out of your Bible study. The book is well written his commentary on Hebrews is eye opening, and He is honest enough to say on Hebrew 6 for example that we cannot definetly know the answer - all in all a really good book
