Product Description
“With a terrific cast led by Keanu Reeves, Vera Farmiga and a splendid James Caan, Henry's Crime is a fun comedy with irresistible heist and heart.” (Boxoffice Magazine) Reeves stars as Henry Torne, a wrongly accused man who winds up behind bars for a bank robbery he didn’t commit. After befriending a charismatic lifer (Caan) in prison, Henry finds his purpose — having done the time, he decides he may as well do the crime. But his outlandish plan to rob the very same bank spins wildly out of control, as he finds himself performing in a stage play and falling in love with the production’s seductive leading lady (Farmiga).

Henry (Keanu Reeves), the Buffalo toll collector-turned-criminal mastermind at the heart of this offbeat drama, lives a quiet life with his wife, Debbie (Judy Greer), until high school acquaintance Eddie (Fisher Stevens) tricks him into driving a getaway car, which leads to a three-year stretch for armed robbery. A new Henry emerges after his cellmate, Max (James Caan, having the time of his life), encourages him to live a little, reasoning "You've done the time, you may as well do the crime." Then, before he gets out, Debbie leaves him for another man (Danny Hoch, who plays Eddie's partner). Fortunately, Henry soon crashes--literally--into Julie (Vera Farmiga), a brittle actress with a soft center, and joins her in a production of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard that takes place in a theater connected to the fateful bank by means of a Prohibition-era tunnel, which the newly sprung Max helps him to excavate. But when Eddie muscles in on the action--things get complicated. Written by Sacha Gervasi (Anvil! The Story of Anvil), Henry's Crime benefits from the light touch of Malcolm Venville (44 Inch Chest). If the pieces--screwball comedy and film noir--don't always fit together the way they should, the movie evokes one of those Michael Caine capers from the 1960s, even if Reeves lacks the same degree of savoir-faire. Sprightly support from Bill Duke, as a security guard, and Peter Stormare, as a director, plus retro-soul selections from Daptone Records help the existential ennui go down easy. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2014Keanu Reeves, Vera Farmiga and James Caan are the very best. I have followed all three of them for a long time. This movie is a wonderful romantic comedy that I would recommend to others. I bought this DVD and I am glad I did. I have watched it more than once and always get a "feel good" chuckle out of it. There are a lot of good "gotcha moments" in it.
The story begins as Henry (Keanu Reeves) has been in prison for a bank robbery he never committed. His history is one of being a toll booth operator and was married, but by the time he gets released from prison his wife is remarried and pregnant. Upon visiting the Buffalo Bank he gets hit by a car driven by Julie (Vera Farmiga)) She is acting in a play where the theater connects to the bank vault. Having done the time Henry feels that he may as well do the crime. James Caan (Max) is released from prison and he helps Henry rob the bank. He always does a great job of acting. Thus enters Julie and Henry having a date and ending up in a relationship. Eventually Henry becomes a main character in Julie's play. Thus we have a play within a play in the storyline.
Julie explains to Henry that Chekhov was dying and it was his last work and it consisted of the "Cherry Orchard" being about a woman and her family estate in Russia, which was her family home in her youth and where she felt safe, and is forced to sell it in order to let go of the past and create a new life in order to survive. Both Henry and Julie find their self in the same position. They both need a new start to survive.
There are so many good parts to this movie which includes the romance and the robbery to name a couple of them. Henry gets shot in the leg during the bank robbery, but makes it back to the stage and refuses to leave without Julie meeting him. Julie questions Henry's love for her thinking all he cares about is money. All of this is done on stage in front of the audience.
In the final scene Henry asks Julie onstage what she is running from and what she is afraid of. In their argument, he tells her that she is afraid of him being in love with her. Julie finally, after much coaxing by Henry, the stage cast members, such as,( Darek and Simon ), and the audience watching the play, encourage her to meet Henry in Moscow. Because of the bank robbery and the storyline Moscow really means going to California and Henry and Julie meeting there.
The last scene has great acting with the addition of the director named "Darek", played by actor Peter Stormare, and the stage manager named "Simon" played by Currie Graham. A great job by both of them. Henry and Julie clearly have great chemistry here. The reactions to them by the cast members also helped make the last scene a really good one. Character actors always "add to" in scenes like this one and they certainly did here. In the end, Julie decides she wants to be with Henry. I like romantic comedies and this was a good one.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2022Lighthearted with serious themes.Judy Greer is great. I missed this completely when it was released and assumed it would be sub par but I was pleasantly mistaken. If you think Keanu is a North American treasure (as do I) you'll want to add this to your list of favorites. Keanu has chemistry with every woman he's ever been paired with. Its so effortless for him; and, while I agree with most who say his performances are oft non-demonstrative, his ability to make the viewer believe that the woman he is with is the only person in the celluloid universe never disappoints. Swoon.
Keanu plays Henry, voted his high school's 'Nicest Guy' of his graduating class leads mediocre life. He is a pushover who works hard but has undesirable friends,. He ends up falsely accused and jailed for a crime, and meets a seasoned criminal played by James Caan. In the film James and Keanu's characters save each other with their friendship as both step out of their comfort zones for a better life. I really loved the ending. Watch it. You just might love the ending too.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2021I thought I was pretty well versed in Keanu's filmography but I never knew about this little gem! Lets go ahead and just recognize the stellar cast. With that said the story was quite surprisingly original and I really enjoyed watching Reeves play a take it as it comes nice guy of very few words. He developed his character as perfectly as he always does and you can see his love and passion slowly chip away at his stoic personality till it crumbles completely at the end. Vera delivers as always. Showing why she is passionate love and sex carefully bottled up in a demeanor of sarcastic wit and fear of being hurt. Ultimately giving in only as she can with a wry line of acceptance. I am now and will forever be crestfallen that Judy Greer is married and there is no chance of me someday marring her myself. To me she is the perfect combination of fey like beauty and sultry gorgeousness that I have only been able to behold in her green eyes and red hair that have had me smitten since first seeing her in Jawbreaker. Caan is a legend and couldnt give a bad performance if he tried. Stormare is his usual eccentric confrontational bully with vision and emotion he does so well. Do yourselves a favor and watch this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gentle, old-fashioned (in a good way) movie
I really rather loved this movie. It is quite old-fashioned in its style and the story is very sweet. I think Keanu Reeves said it was an existentialist romantic crime caper which, actually, pretty much hits the nail on the head! The three main leads did an excellent job, and it's certainly one of those films that I will re-watch. Henry's reconnection with the human race and life in general is lovely to watch. It's like he has been frozen in time for so long, and then he meets Max (James Caan being magnificent as always) and then, after a rather inauspicious first meeting, he falls in love with Julia. Given the way Henry had been previously just drifting through life, seeing things as though through a veil, it is uplifting to see how the veil is swept aside and Henry falls in love, probably for the first time in his life.
