Good Idea. Poor Execution

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2014I used this to coat a composite deck with UV sealer. The deck uses the hidden groove fasteners which did catch on the center groove pad if the handle was at a steep angle. It still made the job quick and easy. It mounted to a cheap broom handle I already had, which saved me a few bucks. It cleaned up well, and I expect to get a few years of use out of it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2023Was looking for a way to apply deck stain without having to tediously brush paint each and every groove between deck boards. The top of the boards were already stained, so just needed something to get those vertical surfaces done in the grooves. This tool looked like it would be the ideal solution. .. but unfortunately, it was not. In fact, it turned out to be a waste of paint, time and money. And in the end, all the grooves had to be hand painted with a brush anyway. Without getting into the mechanics of how this product failed for me, let me just say that I don't recommend it to anyone.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2023This deck stainer has a groove tool, which cuts the work in half! On the down side, this item is frequently out of stock (I tried many online and local stores), so I'm concerned it may become discontinued. No! This applicator saves SO much time, even moreso than a roller...the only brush work needed is recessed corners. Clean-up is simple - just replace the pad.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2024It worked great at first, but the more I use the pop down feature the more the bristles on it wore away. It was really challenging to get in tight spaces because the handle can only be one direction for the pop-up piece to stay up and out-of-the-way.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2019I was worried that the V that goes in between deck boards would be a problem when dipping in stain and scraping off excess. By chance I discovered that when you flip the handle the other way it retracts so the pad is flat. I did not read any directions, I just tore open the package. I was thrilled. I stained using flat side then went over with the V out to get rid of drips between boards. Very smooth, easy to use, perfect for 2x6 deck boards. Highly recommend. Photos show using Cabot Dune Grey semi transparent. Some boards not finished as didn’t want to paint myself in a corner. Waiting for it to dry

- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2020This product showed real promise. The center piece that gets between the boards worked great until the pad came off - 1/4 way through the job, maybe 10 minutes of actual use. I was temped to order more even, but that would have been insanity. The actual flat application pad was fine but also wore down before the job was over.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2016I purchased this to stain a back yard deck. Primarily I wanted to stain between the boards. I found it very difficult to use this pad. You have to rotate the handle downward to make to middle extension come out to apply stain in the crack between the boards. To make it work effectively, if you want to call it that, you have to have the handle pushed down to about three feet off the ground at an angle. It is difficult to maneuver like this, and being 6'4", it is back breaking as well.
I went back to using a paint brush after about 5 minutes of wasting my time with this. Wanted my money too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous and worked really well!
Don' be scared off by the price..... this is one handy little gadget! The handle flips over to reveal a "shark fin" idea that makes staining between the deck boards a breeze.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes staining my deck a Pleasure!
The pad and the easily adjustable attachment for handling were very helpful to use in staining my deck.
My only problem was that the Groove Tool did not work very well in the areas of my deck where the grooves were uneven . I had to use a separate hand -brush to paint out those grooves. After completing the job and washing the pad in running water it was ready to use the next time!

2.0 out of 5 stars Broke
Sponge idea works to hold plenty of stain for application, but there is no flex in the head for cupped or dished boards. The groove tool was the reason we bought this and it broke with the first couple of passes on the deck.
We searched high and low for a product we used to have similar to a swifter wetjet that held and sprayed stain with the groove tool, but could not find. We settled on this but very disappointed. Good bristled stain brush on a pole was better.
