- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2008This director's cut is a much better movie than the theatrical or original video release.
The theatrical cut juggled the three storylines in unwieldy fashion and erred too far in creating action-heroine dilemmas for the Margaret Utinsky character. In this cut, both the POW sequences and the Resistance sequences were trimmed. This not only allowed the central event of the story, the Ranger raid, to have more breathing room, but also purified and enhanced the POW and Resistance storylines, boiling them down to essential drama.
Gibson and Utinsky are more flesh-and-blood in this cut than the archetype stand-ins they were in the theatrical cut, through better choices of dramatic character scenes and dialogue, despite having technically less screen time. This is true for most of the characters, in fact. By allowing more time for the raid itself, including Captain Prince's planning and the tensions between him, Col. Mucci, and Capt. Pajota, it becomes more than the pasted-on "shootout setpiece" of the theatrical release, but a pulse-pounding, tactically credible, and emotionally engaging third act. On this cut, when the storylines converge at Cabanatuan, the tension, drama, and glory feels earned.
Pacific War junkies will also like the acknowledgement given to the Alamo Scouts, who really deserve a movie or miniseries of their own one of these days.
I'm not an expert on the details of Blu-Ray transfers. I will say that the raid sequence, which takes place at night, with key sequences either amid or within structures, truly benefits from the enhanced detail and truer contrast of high-definition video, as opposed to the rather murky sequences of the DVD. Several panoramas of sunrise and sunset over Cabanatuan and of the re-created Manila of the movie, also achieve breathtaking status.
The theatrical release was a plodding paint-by-numbers affair that strained credibility in its fictional storylines, with obviously cynical ploys at action- or romance-movie marketing, framed by real archival footage that put the movie itself to shame. This director's cut, however, is a worthwhile tribute to the historical events and personages it depicts, engrossing, more credible and more truly moving. It lives up to the archival footage that bookends it.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2006Following in the tradition of such great World War II films as "Saving Private Ryan" and "Patton", "The Great Raid" tells the true story of an American rescue mission that took place over five days in January, 1945. Cabanatuan prison was located some thirty miles behind Japanese lines. Inside its walls were over 500 American prisoners. Many were survivors of the Bataan death march. These men had been improsoned for over three years. Many began to feel that their country had left them behind.
By late 1944, the Americans had returned to the Philippines. After learning about the existance of Cabanatuan, the Americans devised a plan to send an elite group of Army Rangers in to resue the POWs. Lt. Col. Henry Mucci (Benjamin Bratt), commander of the 6th Ranger Batallion, was given the assignment of developing the mission. Captain Robert Prince (James Franco) was placed in charge of planning and actually carrying out the raid. The Rangers would have to travel thirty miles into enemy-held territory, much of the time in broad daylight with very little cover. Fortunately, they received a great deal of help from the Filipino resistance.
Once at the camp, the Rangers burst through the front gate, suppressing the Japanese with heavy rifle fire, knocking out strongpoints and vehicles, and going through each building until every prisoner was accounted for. Many could not walk on their own, so the Rangers carried them to saftey. Once safely outside of the camp, Filipios using carabou carts helped transport the prisoners to American lines and freedom. In the end, 511 prisoners were rescued at the cost of only two Rangers who were killed in action. Major Daniel Gibson (Joseph Fiennes) was the ranking American officer in the camp. It is through his eyes that the viewer experiences the horrors of camp life. Included are the numerous beatings, attempted escapes, and other atrocities which the Japanese placed upon the Americans. Gibson died soon after being liberated.
Mucci and Prince were both awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for valor. Although this mission had very little strategic value to the actual fighting of the war, the rescue of these prisoners remains one of the bright parts of the war. These men felt deserted by their country, but in the end, it was American soldiers, risking their own lives, who saved them.
I've been a fan of true stories for a long time, and this movie ranks as one of the best true stories I've seen. Bratt and Franco give excellent performances as the colorful Mucci and the tough-as-nails Prince. Connie Nielsen is very good as Margaret Utinsky, a nurse who stayed behind in Manila after its fall to the Japanese. She smuggled much-needed medical supplies to the prisoners, risking her own life in the process. The extras included on the DVD are excellent as well. The documentary "The Ghosts of Bataan" gives an up-close look at the death march itself, while author Hampton Sides, who wrote the fine book "Ghost Soldiers", provides a history lesson about the raid.
I give this movie my highest recommendation. This is one of the best war films ever made. It is historically accurate, and the acting is excellent from start to finish. Watch and see how a group of 120 determined American soldiers marched thirty miles behind enemy lines to free a group of POWs who felt abandoned by their country.

Daniel Jolley you are my hero my friend”sorry for being so presumptuous to call you my friend, but I totally
agree with your review on this movie, Oh the forgotten people that give us what we call freedom, are we really,
I always hear people say how they had it so good back in the old days, try living in the Philippines back in 1945 or
China, 1937. (see the movie City of Life or Death) for that matter, when the Japanese invade both country,
now I will not say that I’m up on this subject or claim to be an expert, but I know war is hell, from what I’ve seen,
even so, to burn your enemy and watch them die, and is willing to shoot them as they try to escape is beyond despicable,
these officers I know had orders, but to carry them out so willfully with glee, is Way beyond my thinking of what Us, We,
Humans are supposed to be, my good lord this had me on the edge of my seat, hoping that everything would turn out good,
and it did, plus it was nice to see the Raw footage of the actual event that took place on this Disc,
and I was wondering how they get them to show us the actual footage, because I heard this was a long time coming for this movie,
now I can understand your concern Ernst Wiltmann” about what you said, but don’t you think, it shouldn't be about the goggles
and the inaccuracy of a low budget film that I am sure people didn’t want made, now I know that’s really bad,
but the cry should be mostly about all those soldiers who lost their lives to a horrendous, heinous, despicable, Crime towards humanity,
but giving this one Star is doing the same as they are, I don’t think Any war movie should get any Stars so to speak,
but it’s there to give, so I will give five only, only to those brave men who perform this rescue, and to the victims who suffer
at the hands of the enemy, That’s Ten, I sincerely hope I never offend anyone at any time, thanks’

4.0 out of 5 stars Crueldad, coraje y amor
