- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2011Robbie is infamous for making us wait a very long time between albums. But, once again, the wait was well worth it. I pre-ordered the CD when it was first announced. And when a few songs were available on reverbnation, I listened to them. Then NPR let us hear the whole album before it was out and I got hooked. Now that my CD is here, the songs are ripped and ready to travel with me. iTunes took care of the iPod (I also had trouble getting the CD ripped onto it). I even ordered (but haven't yet received) the "Best Buy only" double CD with extra tunes on it. Looking forward to hearing the extra songs.
Of course, any CD with Robbie, Eric Clapton, and Steve Winwood is likely to be great. This one is. Robbie has a great ability to cast musicians on his songs like a really great movie is cast, choosing just the right person and instrument for each song. Amazing sounds on this album. We've come to expect that from Robbie from his first solo album, "Robbie Robertson," through "Storyville," "Music for the Native Americans," and "Contact from the Underworld of Red Boy."
Lyrically and musically, Robbie hasn't lost a thing. He moved me to tears on "She's Not Mine" and "Won't Be Back Again." "When the Night Was Young" made me start thinking about the 60s and 70s and how we've changed since then. "Straight Down the Line" is another one that made me a little nostalgic. "He Don't Live Here No More" is the story of those who went through the excessive drugs and drinking and somehow came out the other side intact; lots didn't, but Robbie and Eric Clapton did. "Right Mistake" was the title that really intrigued me and the song does as well. "This is Where I Get Off" is filled with emotion, regret and hope; leaving The Band took a lot of courage, but it had to happen for Robbie. "Fear of Falling" - ah, I think this is my favorite song on the album. Robbie and Eric trade vocals and guitar licks and create a beautifully simple song that has depths to discover. "Axman" was the most difficult one for me to get into, but the guitar sound was so funky (made me think of Jimi Hendrix) that it drew me in. The two instrumentals, "Madam X" and "Tango for Django" are gems that some people might overlook because they're instrumentals. It's a mistake you don't want to make. "Django" is cinematic (as several people already commented) and "Madam X" flows like a musical blanket, wrapping you in warmth and emotion.
This album, like the earlier ones, is going to live on my iPod and computer and external drives a long time. I've had it playing while writing this review and the emotion holds up, even after multiple listenings. If you're a fan of Robbie or The Band, you don't want to miss this one. If somehow you've never found them, this is the perfect place to do so. You'll end up buying all the previous albums, and probably all of Clapton's as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2011Full disclosure - I've been a huge fan of Robbie's work for decades. Going back to his work with The Band, all his solo albums, and his film work. I had pretty much thought he had retired from music, so I was thrilled and surprised to see a new release from him after 10 years.
I've listened to this CD a dozen times now, and it gets better with each listen. My first impression was that it lacked the raw ferocity of his first eponymous-titled album, and did not have the same strong thematic quality of Storyville, where the flavor of southern blues and New Orleans jazz permeates every song. But the more I listened, the more I realized this may be his most cohesive album yet, in terms of theme and tone. This is a work from a man acting his age, with songwriting that is more directly connected to his life's journey and lessons, where he is now, and how he got there.
Detractors of Robbie's have always made mention of his gravelly voice, and how he speaks lyrics more than sings them. I will admit his vocal style is not for everyone, and his voice is a bit deeper and rougher here, but I think it's a more appropriate complement to these particular songs. If you listen to the lyrics for "Straight Down the Line", "He Don't Live Here No More", and "The Right Mistake", you will come to understand that his weathered voice is well-earned, and in my opinion his voice sounds as great as it did 10 years ago.
Musically, the album is a bluesy, mellow treat. While most of the songs are more quiet and deliberate in nature, there are quite a few which kick into a higher energy, without ever reaching the point of full on rock and roll. While Robbie has always been a superior musician, here he is aided by Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Trent Reznor, and others. Together they create an amazing layered, and textured musical landscape that give all the tracks an organic, focused sound. Backup vocals on several tracks provide a gospel-like quality, which adds a feeling of transcendence to some songs. This is especially evident on the great "This Is Where I Get Off", which appears to be Robbie's take on the breakup of The Band. There are also two instrumental tracks; "Madame X", which was written by Clapton, and "Tango for Django", which has a stirring theatrical quality.
Overall, I think this album is closer in style to Storyville, but more intimate and personal. As for where I think it fits in with Robbie's other works, I'm not quite sure yet. I've listened to Robbie's other albums so many times over the years, and this one is still too fresh for me to place it. In many ways I think it may be his best album, but I'm not sure if it's my favorite yet. Either way, it's a great addition to his solo recording career, and highly recommended to Robbie Robertson fans. For non-fans - if you like slow, thoughtful songs with a bluesy sound and solid guitar work, it's well worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Robbie Robertson makes the grade in spades with this new effort HOW TO BECOME CLAIRVOYANT...
It is so very nice to have Robbie Robertson back out doing what he is best suited for, creating fantastic Discs for you and I to spend money on...Hopefully there will be a tour and I will be able to spend more on Concert Tickets. Anyway you look at it I am very happy that Robbie is back and in top form from the sounds of things. This isn't the best he has done however it certainly isn't chopped liver either. I will proudly display this disc alongside my other Robbie Robertson CD's as this really does make the grade. It will be interesting to see what singles they manage to pull from this as this is pretty much mandatory. The only real gripe I have is my standard gripe about the packaging;s it is stuck in one of those paper jackets like so many others these days which means that you cannot place the disc in a great many of the storage spaces manufactured for the old plastic jackets they simply do not fit any longer, there are also other problems having to do with these things however why waste your time with them...Spigomars

5.0 out of 5 stars How Robbie Robertson has evolved over the years.
It is a Canadian artists success story in spades!. Robbie Robertson has evolved over the decades through several genres with amazingly great music. His ability to proudly showcase his First Nations heritage through all of his musical journeys while creating rock and blues for the ages. Bravo Robbie !!
