Great value Extra-Fine FP. Carbon Ink is good.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2018TLDR + Tip:
I highly recommend this pen because of how finely it writes and how light it feels. If you're looking for an affordable fine writer, this is it.
This pen and ink combination is more on the dry side and due to the fine-ness, it tends write scratchily. If you can't stand the scratchiness or the dryness but love fine lines, I recommend keeping the pen and using a converter with lubricated ink.

My Review
It was a risk ordering this because someone had posted a review where there was leaking in the packaging.
I was looking for an AFFORDABLE extra-fine writing fountain pen and I’m glad I found this. Properly held and with minimal pressure, it writes smoothly and superfinely (good because I write super tiny). A little bit scratchy. Just a little bit. The little bit of scratchiness does not bother me. Just don’t write with too much pressure (That’s the point of fountain pens!).
The ink in the cartridge, Platinum Carbon, is pigment-based and claims to be waterproof. I’ve tested it and it’s not as waterproof as my Noodler’s Polar Black. It’s water-resistant though. Your writings will remain legible after soaking in water.
With this pen, Platinum Carbon ink doesn’t bleed through thin Leuchtturm or Moleskine paper. That’s really awesome because I can write on both sides of the sheet.
At $9, highly recommend.
Lubricated ink recommendations:
- Noodler's Polar Black
- Noodler's Eel Black
More tips:
- Don’t leave the cap off.
- Don’t leave this pen and not use it for an extended period of time if the cartridge is installed. The ink will dry and ruin your pen.
- Like the Platinum Carbon Ink but don't like cartridges? Get a Platinum converter. The Platinum Carbon Ink comes in a bottle.

I have another I use for my log books. Both have held up well. They are easy to hold and well balanced.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2015This is a nicer desk own compared to the Platinum Desk Pen. It writes exactly like the original Platinum Desk Pen. The only differences with this pen is that the cap is different, the gold band in the middle is a little wider and there is gold hardware on the tail of the pen. My pen did not come with a gold Platinum logo.
The pen readily takes the Platinum converter or its provided cartridge and writes right away without any problems. The nib is stiff and doesn't flex much, making this pen ideal for quick notes or sketching. It writes with one of the finest lines of any fountain pen I own at around 0.28mm.
Overall, it's a pen that is a fitting upgrade to the original Desk Pen.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2021I like Platinum Desk Pens and have three of them now (in two different nib widths). I like that they are designed to use Platinum's own Carbon Black formulation of permanent black ink. They can feel a bit "scratchy" to the uninitiated, but they are supposed to have a little feedback, and I greatly enjoy that they do. Platinum also makes a desktop stand to hold these that is functional and basic, but I look more for function than ornamentation anyway.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2019I bought this pen expecting a Platinum Carbon pen. ( I have a medium nib PC and love it.) It looks like a version of PC: same long pointed body and similar name. However, this nib is unpleasantly scratchy, and the ink cartridge that came with it -- unlike PC ink cartridges -- is not waterproof. I found that out the hard way when I used watercolor over my ink drawing, and it bled all over the place. After that fiasco, I looked more closely, and found that the Platinum Carbon name on pen and cartridge was missing. This pen strikes me as a PC lookalike. I wish I had paid better attention before purchasing!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2016For display purposes, this pen is fine. However, if you actually want to write with a pen, this item is horrible. The flow is inconsistent and bare at best. The pen does not have any form of strong grip and utterly useless as a tool meant for actual use. As a display piece, the pen is nice. No delivery problems.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2019I have two of these pens for drawing. They do an extra fine line, are utterly reliable, light weight and comfortable. I carry them in my sketch bag, and don't worry about scratching them up or losing them, like I would with my expensive pens. The caps are not the best, I wouldn't trust them loose in a satchel, but if you put them inside a pen case, where the cap can't accidentally fall off, it would be fine.
