Product Description

First it was a mine that exploded in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Years later, it was a stray bullet that lodged in his brain... Bazil doesn't have much luck with weapons. The first made him an orphan, the second holds him on the brink of sudden, instant death. Released from the hospital after his accident, Bazil is homeless. Luckily, our inspired and gentle-natured dreamer is quickly taken in by a motley crew of junkyard dealers living in a veritable Ali Baba's cave. The group's talents and aspirations are as surprising as they are diverse: Remington, Calculator, Buster, Slammer, Elastic Girl, Tiny Pete, and Mama Chow. Then one day, walking by two huge buildings, Bazil recognizes the logos of the weapons manufacturers that caused all of his misfortune. He sets out to take revenge, with the help of his faithful gang of wacky friends. Underdogs battling heartless industrial giants, our gang relive the battle of David and Goliath, with all the imagination and fantasy of Buster Keaton...

I read some of the "not so good" critics, mainly due to poor image quality (their device, I guess) or lack of subtitle. Well, this has nothing to do with the movie itself. This is a French language movie and, as we all know (most of us, I guess), perfect translation is almost impossible when it comes to expressions and local jokes.
    Now, the movie.
It is very well done and original. Of course, some scenes/decors are a bit exaggerated but this is the goal of the all story! One should have guessed this since the first minute!
Acting is great and all were perfect for this story. I laugh to hard at times!
Multiple possible stories (fiction or not) including in the entire script.
A bit political.. Yes when it comes to past (and probable to come) scandals, but certainly not the point to be pointed out to "anyone in particular". so, no big deal.
I had a good time watching this movie and I would recommend it to anyone who is fluent in French! Probably not for beginners or for viewers who only rely on subtitles.

Almost, but not quite. This lies squarely between Amelie and The City of Lost Children in a number of ways: in warmth, in contact with reality, in believable characters. But, with fantasy of this calibre, you just have to take it in its own terms, whatever the heck those are.

This starts with gritty urban credibility. As a boy, Bazil's father is killed by a weapon from one dealer. As an adult, he's nearly killed by a weapon from another. Brain-injured but capable, he finds a new home among an urban salon de refusees - the people refused by the rest of society. The take him in as one of their own and with him, his mission for revenge. From there, Micmacs creates a beautiful assemblage of slapstick, political commentary, personal warmth, and intellectual goofing. Each character (and they are characters) contributes in his or her own way. Early on, though, I glommed onto the contortionist. Really, she has a central spot in all the good scenes.

Fun, fantasical, and fairly flaky, I wish this for everyone with a taste for the quirky.

I love the idea and the execution of it. This is one of those films that enters a world, takes you to a place that you've not been and you enjoy going there. It's a place that could exist in any big city. In the end, it's the relationship between the individuals that makes this come to life. The director did Amelie, a marvelous classic so I had to investigate this and was rewarded. In both cases he has the ability to create a world that is surprisingly in existence under our very noses. Beautiful film. I'm so glad I finally got the dvd. Oh and, God bless you as this is a very short life.

Great and very funny movie about a group of French misfits who decide to take down 2 massive Arms Companies who are responsible for the bullet the protagonist carries in his brain and the death of his father.
-But unfortunately, THIS DVD is in the PAL format (European) not the American standard NTSC. My DVD player is only NTSC but they do make dual format DVD players. This is the 2nd try at purchasing this DVD and the other attempt (on eBay) also produced a PAL format DVD. I may upgrade to a dual format player in the future so this is not a worthless DVD or format.

For anyone who likes color, design, and fresh originality ( virtual travel to France ) in directing, this film will wake up your senses. It's a movie you can watch again and again, when you've become jaded. Beware if you hate subtitles! You'll be able to challenge your horizons though, if your distaste for reading while watching can be overcome while watching this crazy film. I'm comfortable with subtitles in this film because there isn't a lot of it, but there IS a lot to enjoy just looking at this fanatic's creation. See this film!

The DVD Blu-ray value is good as well. No problems to report about the disc. Enjoy!

If you're finding this movie because you liked Jeunet's "AMELIE",. then you should not hesitate to go ahead and watch this delightful little movie. Something of a blend of THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX, MYSTERY MEN and THE TALL BLONDE MAN WITH ONE BLACK SHOE as shot through the lens of AMELIE, it is a treat to enjoy. It's a good bit darker than AMELIE, and the characters aren't quite as lovable or well-developed as that movie, but the storyline is topical and at times profound, the capers and quirks are satisfying and the milieu is almost as engaging as the earlier movie.
Dany Boon is good as a man damaged by industrial greed and avarice, and Andre Dussolier and Nicholas Marie are truly outstanding as his nemeses - Marie's character Marconi in particular is a deep study of the archetypal smooth profit-at-any-cost monster. Rubber-faced Dominique Pinon and Yolande Moreau return and are wonderful as always. The effects and rube-goldberg contraptions are delightful whimsy, and it keeps you laughing and engaged the whole time - except for one scene near the end which makes you think, deep, long and hard **. I recommend it.

(**P.S. - I wrote this before I knew of the horrifically tragic events in Paris yesterday, which make this movie's theme and message even more poignant.)

Nous sommes tous Charlie. Nous sommes tous Elijah Lovejoy. Look deeper - this film gives a little perspective.

French with subtitles. Micmacs is the story of very sweet man who loses his father at a young age to a land mine he was disarming. Then years later he is shot in the head and the bullet is from the same company. Due to the damage he loses his job and apartment and is taken in by a misfit group who live in a junk yard, They become his family and now it is time revenge on the arms companies, yes there are two. Amazing what a misfit group can do, I can't recommend this movie enough, will say no more without spoiling, but truly love this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, Weird, Wonderful

If you've seen any of Jeunet's work before, you'll know what to expect, and this film is one of his best so far - a must see.

If you're new to the Jeunet style, prepared to be amused, amazed and astounded.

Starting with an unlikely set of circumstances, but the sort of events that happen everyday to someone, somewhere out there, every day, the film starts to introduce a clever, witty, intelligent story that is at once engaging and weird. A man with a bullet in his head, meets a woman with a very flexible attitude to life, who stays with an artist who works with automatons, looked after by a woman who likes to mother everybody. Every character is slightly odd, but very believable, a misfit in society, and each is very well drawn by the writers and brought to life by the actors.

Together, these characters set out to wreak revenge on two arms dealers who have ruined one man's life. Do they succeed? Of course they do, but you'll never guess how they go about it.

This film is at one realistic and surrealistic, but you'll be hard put deciding what's surreal and what isn't.

Full of charm, wit, intelligence, subtlety and nuance, this film entertains from start to finish. It's saddening and uplifting, slick and clumsy, far-fetched and down to earth, all at the same time.

If you're looking for something to counteract the bland pap of Hollywood, Micmacs delivers two hours of pure pleasur that show what films can and should be at their best.

See this film as soon as possible!
