Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals (DVD)
When you think of basketball in the 1980s, two names immediately come to mind: Larry Bird and Earvin "Magic" Johnson. This HBO Sports documentary delves into the fierce rivalry—and unlikely friendship—between the two from the 1979 NCAA Championship game through their decade of NBA dominance, when the pair won three MVP awards each and a combined eight titles. In addition to intimate insights from Bird and Magic themselves, interviews include Pat Riley, Kevin McHale, Cedric Maxwell, Michael Cooper, George Fox, Evelyn Johnson, Mark Bird, Arsenio Hall, Ted Shaker, Bryant Gumbel, Jackie MacMullan, Charles Pierce and Steve Springer.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2024Magic casually notes that Larry Bird had amazing stats, but he wondered , as all black players do he says, if he can do it against "us" which is how all black players think he added. He found out when they played together on an international team that Bird really could play. Can you imagine if that was reversed? Larry Bird would be cancelled. Great documentary but several times it displays a racism against Bird and white players in general from many black players in the NBA.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2010Of all the videos about Bird and Magic that have come out through the years, this is by far the best. IT IS NOT A HIGHLIGHT REEL. This is about how they are forever linked in so many ways. They are linked in a lot of ways by being polar opposites from each other on some things. Black and white, East and West, charismatic and awkwardly quiet, Boston and LA, among about a million other comparisons. I saw this twice on HBO and I plan on buying it as soon as it comes out.
Their story is pretty much storybook type material. No two players in NBA history have ever been forever linked as Larry Bird and Earvin Johnson. Only a few rivalries in sports history compare. As I said before, this is not a highlight reel. This is as indepth life and career overview that has been made about these two men. Being too that it is made by HBO, it gives it much more credibility than any other previous biographies about them.
If you are a fan of sports in general I think you will enjoy this selection. If you are basketball fan, then this is a must have for your collection. Anyone will love Magic's infectious attitude about life and how emotional he is about himself and his friends and Bird's emotionless facial expressions as well as dry, ironic sense of humor that will have you rolling in the floor. Both of these men are equally likable but totally different personality wise. They were once bitter enemies and now are great friends that have a special connection and understanding only they can grasp.
I wrote HBO to release this on DVD and they finally have and I'm so excited! I think anyone that watches this will see why after they view this gem!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2023even if you don't enjoy basketball, the comradery and friendship that eventually bore fruit with these two ultimate competitors is a blessing to watch!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2017Although I grew up in Ohio, I became a huge Celtics fan back in the '80's. To this day, the Celtics are the only NBA team that I have cheered for and Bird is still my favorite player of all time. As a Celtics fan, it was pretty much my duty to hate Magic and the Lakers. But as the years have gone by, not only do I miss those Celtics teams from 30 plus years ago, I also miss watching those Magic-led Lakers teams. I originally saw this documentary on HBO and I knew that I would absolutely have to have the DVD for my collection. HBO does an awesome job of putting together sports documentaries and this is one of the best I have seen. As others have said in their reviews, Magic & Bird isn't as much about basketball as it is about the relationship between these two great players over the years. I would recommend this DVD to anybody.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2022Bird should payed someone to do his mom's driveway, probably would have won another title if he didn't hurt his back doing it himself. magic should have left it in his short shorts! Would have played longer instead of being a player
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2023A nice insight to the Magic vs Bird relationship.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2023Very well done documentary on two NBA legends. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2011If you believe that basketball replicates life offering lessons in competition, friendship, generosity, self discipline, honor and all sorts of other values and learning experiences, then Magic and Bird is a virtual Bible. There is a beauty in this intertwining of lives at which you can only marvel. At moments only "awesome" (that overused expression many use to describe a favorite ice cream) can approximate how Magic and Bird came to the game at the same time from such diverse backgrounds, how they were selected by rival teams, how they played the game with so much love and respect, and how as their time in the game came to an end their rivalry bred friendship. This film (and there is a book) is a teaching moment. Don't miss it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Gran documental pero idioma hispano no español
El documental es excepcional pero si lo que buscas es escucharlo en español olvídate, esta en inglés e hispano no castellano. La audición se hace insufrible. Tan insufrible que a los 5 minutos lo pasé a ver directamente en inglés.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for a fan of both of these legends.
I purchases this DVD for my dad, as he is a huge fan of the NBA starting with the rivalry of Bird & Magic. This DVD is worth it for the highlights of their greatest triumphs alone. It's a very well done documentary on the competitive spirit of these two rivals on the court and the men they were off it.
