While in the process of making my very first batch of tamales I looked up for options to make this long process more easy for me, and so I came across this item.
🫔 It’s easy to use. However, and I should highlight this ‘it is highly dependable on the ‘masa’ consistency’, just make sure your masa has the right consistency to make it ideal for spreading.
🫔 This is a patented item, in the US and MX, which makes it more reliable to me ✔️
🫔 So far, I have bought 3 of them, one for me, one for my grandma 👵🏼, and one for my friend!
Thank you for reading my long review and enjoy your tamales 😉

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2015Such a simple product but it cuts the time drastically. We only make tamales once a year. Previously (without the masa spreader) my wife makes a batch of masa and we both start spreading on the husks for 20 minutes then she makes another batch (repeating this process many times).
This time with the masa spreader I did all the spreading and she just made batches of masa (taking a 5 minute break in between batches). I was waiting on her. This simple tool well outperformed my expectations. This was my first time using it and it took me a few dozen times before I could get down the single swipe spreading method. It is still faster if you have to spread out 5 times because all the masa is on the husk with the first stroke. So many times I have been let down by product advertising promises. Not this time. Worked great and very pleased!!! I bought 2 but I was so fast that my wife did not even get to try the other one.
I put a towel on the dining table to protect it and keep the cutting board from moving around. I put the white plastic/poly cutting board on top of the towel. The board did not move and behaved as if it was glued to the table. The board allows the spreader to quickly scrape up the excess masa prior to the next husk. It also protects my table from scratches.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2016I've read a lot of the reviews. The lower ratings seem to be a lot people stuck in their old ways. That's understandable, you like your old way then stick to it. But to trash this product as a waste of money because you couldn't get the hang of it or didn't want to give it a chance?? Come on people!
My mom has made tamales for all my life. I'm almost 40 lol
She's always had multiple people help her and they all did it with spoons. I had helped but I could never get the hang of it. I seen the video everyone seen and jumped! I bought it showed her the video. We've had them for 3 almost 4 years. Since then it's been just us two doing the spreading and we FLY through them! Yeah it's a little weird or awkward at first but the more you give it a chance the better you get. I used to dread helping in the past but since I've bought this I haven't minded one bit because it doesn't take as long. It's so quick you don't even have enough time to get a sore back from all the repetitive motion lol
GIVE IT A CHANCE! An honest chance! It'll change your tamale making life.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2016While some people might be able to emulate the product's video with ease, I myself found the learning curve on using this tool too steep.
Clearly it works like a charm, because the unit I received is exactly the same as the video.
I ordered it to make a large quantity for an event, and after a number of frustrating tries and tweeking of technique, I went back to using my hands. I used a popular brand of prepared tamale masa that comes in a large tub, perhaps the masa needed to be more wet or more dry.
Perhaps I'll try again when I have more time for trial and error, or when I make my own dough.
My advice is to buy this only if you have the time to experiment with technique and masa.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2016I absolutely love this product. I'm known as the Tamale Queen!! I love to make tamales, but it can be a long tedious job, to say the least. Unfortunately, good, delicious tamales, are hard to find, so, when Ma and I get the craving, I have to make them!! This little gadget has cut my tamale making time in HALF!! Literally!! OMG!! I whip them out now. I gave it 3 stars, because I think it was ridiculously overpriced! I had to have it, so I paid for it. I think it should only be about $5.99, it's just a plastic square. I think I paid $16.99!! You can get a tile spreader and use that and it would be just as comparable. But anyway, it's a great little gadget. I wouldn't pay that price again, I recommend this product.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2013We have been eyeing this masa spreader for a couple years but my Grandmother would never use anything other than a spoon. Well, this year she agreed to only supervise so we decided to purchase this since none of us are very good at using the spoon. It is a good width for our meat and mole and saved some masa because we usually covered the entire husk, but now we were only doing the width of the spreader, which was plenty.
It took a bit to figure out how to hold the spreader and use it to spread an even and thick enough layer of masa but once we figured it out everything went quickly. We were able to make 300+ tamales in about 4 hours. We were definitely faster using this spreader.
My grandmother could still layer the masa faster with a spoon but those of us that never learned that way preferred this spreader.
