The bag is sturdy and re-sealable, and the material itself is a good consistency without it being too fine and prone to leaving dust. The perlite is more solid and won't compact as easily over time, while vermiculite will. It's a finer version of horticultural chips, good for seed starting mixes, and not half medium grade and half sand, as with other brands. Customers like that it's used for strong, healthy plants and that it provides good soil aeration.

Messed up bag!!!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2015This is my first experience using vermiculite, at first I was really surprised at how light the bag was, and at how light weight and airy the product itself is, it is about the same density as foam packing peanuts (just slightly more dense and crunchier). Be sure not to have any fans blowing in the area because the wind picks this stuff up very easily and could make a mess very easily. I like to put this in layers in between the soil and spray each layer, then fluff it all up together afterwards. My tomatoes and roses seem to be thriving, I mixed this together with Espoma Organic Potting Mix (same brand), and together the combination works very well.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2016Definitely worth the price. This is a great product. You can use it the same way you use pearlite, add it to your soil to make it less clumpy and improve the drainage and air flow. I use it this way and I also use it to help with sprouting. If you put your soil, seeds, water the seeds, then on the top only vermiculite and water that, you'll be amazed how much faster your seeds will sprout.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2016Wonderful organic product. Really helped my plants get the nutrients and air that they need. I like the bag that it came in with a ziptop so I can use a small amount for my small plants then just zip the bag back up to be sure nothing gets in the bag to contaminate the product. I have been using these to grow roses in small pots and this vermiculite allows for the air to get all the way to the bottom of the pots and keep the roots nice and healthy. I plan on using this in my new herb garden that i will be placing in large pot lining my window sill. Mixing this in with your soil will really help a plant live a long and healthy life. The price on this product is also great on amazon, cheaper than my local gardening shop, especially if you want to go organic.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2016This worked great, I guess. It seems that the vermiculite holds moisture a lot more than regular potting mix.
I currently am using this with a mixture of coco fiber to house my tarantula, and he's doing great. I assume this mix will work well in arid areas where you need your substrate to absorb water longer.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2016Vermiculite is sort of like perlite, but is slightly different.
When added to soil, vermiculite and perlite both help lighten up and give your soil an airy quality to it. An airy soil mixture is great for certain plants whose roots prefer air channels to breathe. Perlite is more solid and won't compact as easily over time, vermiculite will compact over time and turn mushy, but it also holds moisture/fertilizer better. Aesthetically, perlite is white in color, vermiculite is brown and blends in with your soil.
I own a lot of different potting mediums because I experiment with custom mixes for my carnivorous plants, and vermiculite is a must for any horticulturalist. I urge you to experiment as well, and enjoy the fun in gardening. Plants are cool! Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2014In February I was searching hardware stores here in Indiana for vermiculite, to combat some green mold on top of the growing medium where I'm starting some seedlings. The stores didn't have their gardening products out yet. The only vermiculite they had was in huge bags in the construction or insulation departments. So I went online and found this. The bag is the right size for a home gardener. It was easy to open and I sprinkled the vermiculite on the mold and the mold went away. The bag also was easy to close up again. I might not need it again for another year and I think it will last.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2020The quality of the product itself is a GREAT addition to my soils so far (I have recently returned to gardening due to current world events and my ~botanist~ friend as well as google explained that each plant is unique and a “one size fits all” potting soil won’t work the best, so I make my own mixes for soil) and I have zero complaints regarding the product itself but BE WARNED it is shipped in a box significantly larger than the item so (probably due to handling) when I opened the box, some loose vermiculite flew out. Although there were no holes in the bag so I’m not super sure how that happened.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2020last bag had 4 holes in it this one was good and sealed , using this for making a great starting soil, mixed, with perlite, potting soil, and good ole sand mountain tops soil, for blue berries, roses, peppers, tomatoes.!
