- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2019I was surprised by the lack of reviews for this under appreciated live two disc concert from the A Reality Tour recorded in Dublin, Ireland. As for many, myself included, the Reality and Heathen albums are not as familiar as earlier and later works. This live CD will open to your eyes to the solids songs Bowie wrote for both of these albums plus many older song and not so older songs for that time at the beginning of the 20th century.
What makes this such a stellar outing is first of coarse Bowie, he is in peak form and in great spirits for this two night run. Second is the band! This may be the best live band Bowie ever assembled in his career. They handle it all with power, finesse, with amazing playing and backup vocals. Under the direction of Ireland's own guitarist Gerry Leonard every song is full of energy and a keeper, even China Doll is given a harder edge which works extremely well.
As for the rest of the band drummer Sterling Campell is extraordinary, Earl Slick always delivers the goods and rocks out on" I'm Afraid of Americans" and the band's heart the incomparable Gail Ann Dorsey. She is truly an exceptional player and her contributions help propel all of the songs in ways that any true Bowie fan will greatly appreciate.
I did get to see her play on her first tour with Bowie, The Outside tour with Nine Inch Nails, only once as that was the last time I saw Bowie live.
What is also noteworthy about this two disc show is that it is basically in the order it was played, with a few minor exceptions, which for a live album is hardly ever the case. I think after googling the setlist on setlistfm, that the majority of the show is from the 23rd. That night they played 35 songs. There are 34 on this disc!
This is show is on par with Live from the Blackout, which also features a killer band. The recording quality is excellent and the only thing that might annoy some listeners is that the enthusiastic Dublin audience is mixed in higher than maybe they should've been. I think this was the case as Bowie was having such a grand time and as he said in his words " you are such a lovely audience it a pure joy to play for you."
As for a Bowie setlist you would be hard pressed to find a better example of getting it all. New at the time, New Killer Star, mixed in with the classics, Five Years All the Young Dudes, several great covers, Sister Midnight, and some obscure gems such as Battle for Britain, The Letter.
Plus for less than $14 bucks?!?
Please add this one to your collection as you will continue to reap benefits for years to come appreciating the entire Bowie catalog.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2005If Bowie and company do not win a Grammy for this there is no justice. The performance is outstanding, the band is hot, and the song selection essential. Bowie has always been ahead of his peers in the use of video and this one is a masterpiece of sight and sound. The lighting is incredible whether it was there in the arena at the time of the concert or added later. The effects are added succinctly reflecting and enhancing the natural movement of the performers on stage (and you can actually see them), the reactions of the audience (contrasting views of those right in front with angles revealing the size and architecture of the arena itself), and in conjunction with the stage and arena lighting creating micro-universes on portions of the stage serving to delineate singer and musicians in a multitude of stances.
Bowie is more comfortable with his band and his audience than I have ever seen him. He's having a great time even with the oldest tunes which he has performed thousands of times before. The show benefits from the inclusion of several tunes from Bowie's latest release, Reality, which is one of the five best recordings of his illustrious career.
In one song he intones (as only Bowie can), "I believe in the Beatles." The truth is, Bowie is a genius and the greatest rock and roll performer of his time which began near the end of the Beatles time. They are the only rock and roll act to equal Bowie and, maybe, surpass him simply because they stand as the originators. However, for all their amazing songwriting and transcendent influence they were never a live act in the sense which David Bowie is. And he still outstrips all that have come since in both areas: songwriting and live performance.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2006After reading the disappointed-fan review of this DVD labeling it as unbearably artsy and MTV-cliched I was apprehensive to make the purchase. However, perhaps because the reviewer was actually fortunate enough to be
at the concert and s/he is making comparisons of which I have none (aside from my first concert ever - Bowie 1978!), I was enthralled with this DVD. Yes, it isn't straight shot concert footage, there is enhancement here and there with some 'artsy' stuff, but not much; certainly not enough to detract from the enjoyment of the performance and the music.
I didn't read the set list before I bought the disc; I wanted to be "surprised," like a concert-goer (call me a dork). It rocked. The set was long, fabulously and energetically performed, and everyone seemed to be rocking out having a great time. Bowie, older for sure, but still beautiful, flashing smile, playing and having fun with the audience, voice incredible, absolutely INCREDIBLE as always. He's amazing. When they performed "Under Pressure," Gail Ann Dorsey floored me with her range and strength of voice. I never heard her really do a lead vocal, I guess.
Additionally, the number of old favourites was staggering and really made the entire show an event. The opening with classic Bowie, interspersal of classic Bowie amongst all of the newer works, and the closing with classic culminating in a terrific performance of "Ziggy Stardust" just had me cheering on my sofa like I was there. Dork, as I said. I think "my kids" need to see this, and I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate it legitimately into middle school math curriculum!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It is David Bowie.... !! 😻😻😻😁😁
Can anyone really capture David Bowie? This is a great concert-I was at one of these!- so I can't complain...but... Lol...
It is pretty choppy, and the shots should be longer...though if you close your eyes...It's still Bowie in top form! "Be my Wife" is a great example...beautifully done. They should have just pointed the camera on his face and left it there.
I am at a loss for words, otherwise. I just got this, and I am watching *him* : David Bowie: and I miss him so much. I loved seeing him in concert. This brings it all back for me. There are some beautiful shots of him, once the camera slows down.
Get it for those moments. Close your eyes. It's David Bowie.
What else could you want?! Just stunning when you hear some songs. "Oh no, not me, I never lost control..."
Stunning. Thanks, Mr Bowie. Love you. 💗💗💗💗

5.0 out of 5 stars Para Fans de David Bowie
Directo ¡¡¡Brutal!!!.
