- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2013I am still using this to keep my house from burning down! :)
I have an Oslo wood stove. Oslo being Norway's capital, one would be correct if one would assume that the Norwegian-manufacturer would save this name for their best stove and one that has been made for one-hundred years or more. I have used this seemingly-simple device for approximately 4 to 5 years. I'm not going to brag; but I have not had a house-fire YET, as I have paid CLOSE attention and kept my fires within the desired and safe burn-range clearly-denoted by the white area on this thermometer. It works as-advertised and is quite well-made.
Some things you ought to know: That safe burn range is between about 300 and 600 or 650 max degrees Fahrenheit. Below that temperature, you are coating the inside of your flu with creosote. Once you reach 300, if you can sustain 300 to 500 degrees or so, you will burn it off, keep your house warm, and not have to worry about the risks of a chimney-fire, as long as your flu is KEPT CLEAN, as in a chimney-sweep needs to clean it CORRECTLY at least once per year, all the way back to the stove!
Another thing is this: Even my chimney-sweep cannot comprehend this and he puts my STOVE-thermometer on my FLUE PIPE every single time he cleans. I now say nothing and simply move it back. There are TWO types of these thermometers! One BELONGS on the flu-pipe, but ONLY if it is SINGLE-WALLED. It CANNOT read the temperature accurately on double-walled pipe (like mine)! Hence, I use the SECOND type of thermometer. This one is clearly-advertised as a "stove top" thermometer. It belongs on the STOVE -not the stove-pipe. So, this is an important distinction; and I believe all that utilize such means of heating their homes will agree that the little details like these are vital considerations and must-have information when dealing with a wonderful, archaic method of heat that can get out-of-control QUICKLY if one does not educate themselves in safety.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2024Needed a new thermometer to replace one that was at least 20 y/o. This has performed well so far on the wood stove top. Accurate and easy to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024Does exactly what it is supposed to do and can be trusted
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2011I bought this thermometer for use with my Jotul wood stove to monitor stove temperatures. The stove literature says that the stove should be operated between 400 and 600 degrees (F) for best results and the break in instructions recommended 3 fires to temperatures of 200, 300 and 400 degrees, so I decided I'd better have a thermometer.
I initially bought an Inferno stove _pipe_ thermometer at a stove store because that was all they had. Once I read the instructions for that thermometer, they said it wasn't recommended for stove _top_ use, so I bought this thermometer online. The recommendation is apparently because of the temperature range markings, not because of any difference in the thermometers actual performance. Once I had the chance to compare the two, both of the thermometers read very similar temperatures, this one has the correct ideal range (400-600) labeled on it. The stove pipe thermometer would be fine if you use the temperature, not the colored zones marked on the thermometer. The two appear to be identical except for the painted range.
I'm a tool geek, so I also bought an infrared thermometer (Kintrex) to check my two stove thermometers. The IR thermometer works quickly and seems to be very accurate. It shows that when the stove is warming up, the Inferno thermometers lag by as much as 50-100 degrees. Once the stove temperature has stabilized, they agree with the IR measurement very well. Another thing the Kintrex thermometer shows is that each of the four corners of the stove can be a very different temperature as the stove is heating up. This variance can be 100 degrees or even more. Once the stove is up to temperature, the four corners will be within 10-20 degrees of each other.
As long as you remember there will be a lag while the stove is heating up and the fact that one corner's temperature alone isn't going to be an exact representation of the whole stove temperature, this should be a useful tool as you learn to use your stove.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2024Accurate temperature measurements. Let's you aware when your stove temp is optimum to avoid creosote buildup thus thus helps you avoid chimney fires...
A bit spendy though. The seller could lower the price a little.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2013I've had this simple but effective device on my stove top for about three weeks. It seems to be well made and responsive to changing temperature. Inferno used a clean easy to read design that looks like it belongs on my stove. Although I have no way to test the accuracy of this thermometer, I can tell you that the stove certainly is putting out decent heat when the indicator on the dial reads that the stove is within its best range. I'm aware that this device is intended for getting a quick and fairly accurate reading of how hot your stove top is. The mechanism is a simple coil of steel that expands with rising heat. It is not a scientific device, but instead a helpful indicator that will let you know at a glance about how hot or cool your stove is. I honestly feel it fulfills its mission as it is intended to. I like it!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2017This one is very nice. It works well and lets me feel confident that I am keeping the my fireplace insert at the temperature that it needs to be. I have changed the way that I use the insert since I have gotten this thermometer. Recently I checked the top of the stack after I had a fire going for a few hours and keeping it in the best zone. Temperature at the top of the stack was around 250 deg F, safe zone for creosote.
The Inferno is a USA made product, steel construction with a wire bail for removal. Magnet works good and its easy to read. If it ever stops working I would buy another.
If you don't have a surface thermometer for your wood stove this is a great item and in my opinion a great choice.
