Product Description

Product Description

Starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, this film is about a New York City subway dispatcher's whose ordinary day is thrown into chaos by an audacious crime: the hijacking of a subway train.

Amazon.com

John Godey's 1973 novel The Taking of Pelham One Two Three boasts a suspense situation so surefire that even the directorial bad habits of Tony Scott can't ruin this latest movie version. Four armed men seize a New York City subway train, isolate one car, and threaten to start killing passengers if a ransom isn't paid within the hour. The ransom was a million dollars in the book and also in Joseph Sargent's solid 1974 movie, in which Robert Shaw played the mercenary leading the hostage takers and Walter Matthau was the growling transit cop trying to outsmart him. In 2009, the title has gone digital--The Taking of Pelham 123--and inflation has jumped the asking price to $10 million. Where Shaw's menace was steely, John Travolta opts for manic, and shamelessly has a blast in the master villain role. His adversary, cagily underplayed by Denzel Washington, has been upgraded in civil-service rank but also demoted on suspicion of taking a bribe. This colors the dynamics of the dialogue between Washington at his control-center console and Travolta on the motorman's microphone aboard the stalled train.

So far, so reasonably good. But the director's trademark tactics keep getting between, well, everything. From the get-go, the visuals are subjected to pointless and irritating stutter effects, speeding-up/slowing-down, gratuitous camera movement, and the interposition of dirt- or light-smeared panes of glass between the camera and people we'd appreciate a clear look at. The 1974 movie settled for one police car being wrecked as the ransom is rushed uptown; Scott requires multiple collisions, each the occasion for police cruisers taking Lethal Weapon-style flight. The hostages in the earlier film were wittily individuated, a multicultural group portrait of the city at that mid-'70s moment; the ones on Scott's train--and also Travolta's fellow perpetrators, including that wonderful character actor Luis Guzmán--barely register. On the upside, John Turturro and James Gandolfini shine as two guys who (like the actors themselves) are very good at their jobs—respectively playing a hostage negotiator and His Honor, the mayor. The screenplay by Brian Helgeland (
L.A. Confidential, Mystic River) strives intelligently, if formulaically, to add new dimensions to the main characters and to offer its own gloss on the current economic meltdown. --Richard T. Jameson

    Love this movie so much

I like watching the 1974 version with Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw and then following that up with this version. I'd be hard pressed to say which version I prefer. I like them both and enjoy viewing them back-to-back.

    Must watch

The movie was great. Lots of fast-paced, Blu-ray worthy action, Washington and Travolta doing fine acting, as usual.
Travolta has become delicious as a villain,(a'la Face-off, Battlefield Earth..), and Washington is convincing as a middle-aged,decent-but-flawed train-boss who stumbled once because he's mortal.
And Gandolfini is just plain fun as the mayor who just wants to retire peacefully....
Kept my attention throughout, even though it was past my bedtime.

    HOWEVER-
    I want to address Amazon here for just a minute;
If I can buy the movie, BD edition and all, for the same price at W*lmart, THREE DAYS BEFORE IT HITS MY MAILBOX, why does Amazon think I'll be loyal?
Used to be, the item, (DVD, Book, CD), would hit my mailbox on the same day it was released onto the shelves. Kept me from feeling like making the 20 minute trip to the W*lmart.
    NO LONGER.
Now Amazon isn't shipping until release day.... or later. So where's the bonus to buying from Amazon?
No money saved, the total price comes out a few cents cheaper at W*lmart,(taxes vs. shipping).
If I pass it on the shelves 3 days before it gets to my mailbox..... well, you get the point.
The trip to the W*lmart starts to look pretty darn worthwhile, especially if it's a film we've been waiting for since it hit the theater.

Wake up Amazon! You're gonna lose us on new releases, if there's nothing to be gained by shopping with you! That Big Smile is starting to sag, just a tad.

I confess that I just watched this film The Taking of Pelham 123 after my husband mentioned to me that he has watched and liked a 70s version of this film. I am very glad to have watched this film as there are many twists and turns throughout. The Taking of Pelham 23 features the plot of Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) dramatically having his life changed when Ryder a.k.a Dennis Ford (John Travolta) decided to hijack the train route that Walter Garber was assigned to. Garber’s boss John Johnson (Michael Rispoli) and Lt. Camonetti (John Turturro) try to take over for Garber when his shift was over but he becomes a focal point of the a very dangerous situation whether he wants to or not after Ryder insists on speaking with Garber. Of course, there are other characters who played important roles in this The Taking of Pelham 123 film. I do feel that multiple actors and actresses contributed to this film in different ways. However, I admit to being undecided between which acting portrayal was my most favorite from this film and I am going to have to leave others to decide that as I feel that both Denzel Washington and John Travolta gave brilliant reenactments of their personas even though both men appeared to be each other’s character foil.

    Inhalt:
