- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2024This is the kind of album that (for me anyway) needs a second listen to appreciate the many sounds. This CD wasn't in the box set that I have so I bought it. Glad I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2016The first listen to this album was an adventure I wish we ELO fans could have continued to have with more albums. Chock full of cool actual "secret messages", the album held up to it's title. Back-masking bits with "secret messages" were fun to play backwards on my vinyl version of this album. The cover art sans the spaceship, for a second time in a row, also has it's share of esoteric messages and the back with the anagrams as well. The opening song lulls you into a false sense of "oh, yes, this it the ELO that I know and love. Then, "Loser Gone Wild" continues the trend until the dog barks 5 times then the songs gets exciting! After that, "Bluebird" (wUrk! wUrk! suck on THAT Brit'nee) is another nugget of excellence! jAnyone besides me who's noticed "blue" is a recurring word in songs for this group? "Time After Time" was another fun, synth ride surprise that totally rocks and gets stuck on *repeat* on my cd player. "Four Little Diamonds" was a straight out rocker! "Rock & Roll Is King" is the only single I remember being released from this album. And then..... I heard nothing from them until Jeff did a solo album, and I knew it was over.... This CD has (electric) heart and soul but I have a feeling it didn't do so well commercially. I can't understand w h y. If you're a fan of ELO...there's an "extra tracks" version of this CD out....just saying. I enjoyed "Stranger", "Endless Lies" alteraversion very much! Jeff has that Roy O sound down pat and spot on! Completest will rejoice for the extras!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2005I've been getting back into ELO yet again, and beginning to appreciate Jeff Lynne's talent more than ever. Electric Light Orchestra's 1983 album "Secret Messages" strikes me as a solid, badly underrated album.
Jeff Lynne was onto something here, and although it was hardly without precedent, he really hit upon an in-your-face ear-candy production style that can be strongly detected in his subsequent production work with George Harrison and Tom Petty. Lynne hadn't entirely abandoned real orchestration here, although to a large extent he had. There are lots of synthesizers--he admits in the liner notes of this 2001 reissue of the album that he was after a more hi-tech sound, and the results are mostly impressive.
He also wrote a bunch of quality songs. The uptempo title track is a highly catchy harmony-fest with earthy and atmospheric electric guitar. The tempo-shifting "Loser Gone Wild" is a terrific track with an engagingly bluesy feel on the verses and an extremely catchy, richly harmonized chorus. "Bluebird" is a wistful and affecting, if slightly melodramatic, mid-tempo pop-rocker. The reflective "Stranger" is a supremely enjoyable ballad that sounds very similar to Al Stewart's "Song On The Radio". "Take Me On and On", with its ringing arpegiatted guitars and hushed moody feel, is sumptuous. "Four Little Diamonds" is a lot of fun, with masterfully executed chorus harmonies. Even "Rock 'N' Roll Is King" is hardly as lousy as I used to feel it was.
I haven't changed my mind though about "Letter From Spain", which is a dull 'atmospheric' piece with that annoying repetition of "lettah" [sic] running throughout.
In the end, "Secret Messages" is a highly enjoyable piece of work with some true essential gems--very much worth discovering if you perhaps haven't heard it in many years. Make sure you get the bonus track fortified reissue though, because this older CD, for whatever reason, doesn't contain the song "Time After Time", and that's a noteworthy loss in my book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2023Package came fast and in good condition. I'm a sucker for having physical copies of stuff I can take camping or in the car and just leave my phone behind. This is one of my favorite bands of the 80's. This is the type of music I just cant help but to tap my foot and jam along
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018Another perhaps somewhat lesser known ELO classic, Secret Messages, offered here in an expanded edition. Jeff Lynne's genius shines through on every album he ever made. And this album is no exception. Just listening to "Four Little Diamonds" or "BlueBird" one of my all time favorites are two examples of his humor and his sense of touching on the human emotion. But all 14 tracks of this expanded edition are well worth adding to your ELO collection if you don't already own this classic. And unlike so many artists, all his albums are priced so reasonably, there is no reason not to own every single one. Add this to your collection. You'll be glad you did. The greatest hits CD's are great, but the legacy is in each individual LP.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2014Believe it or not, I was not aware of this CD. It does have some former hits on it, Bluebird, (luv it) Four Little Diamonds, the 1983 single, Secret Messages with that guitar mastery and techno-pop rock, with Jeff Lynn's unquestionable insigtfulness for music. And of course "Rock N Roll Is King!" But, wait until you hear the others, like; Loser Gone Wild, Take Me On & On, Time After Time, Stranger, Danger Ahead, Letter from Spain, Train of Gold, along with those above.
Then we are treated to three bonus tracks; No Way Out, Endless Lies and After All. What more can I add, it's typical ELO with the brain-child, genius Jeff Lynn. I will buy anythin I see that says ELO. So treat yourself to this nice surprise, (it was to me) and as always, you can thank me latter for all of ELO's music & DVDs.

II have been an ELO fan since 1976, I came across this cd after seeing the video of the Secret Messages track on
U Tube, and now listen to this and my favourite track Danger Ahead, every day. Jeff,s lyrics are so well written. I don,t know how I missed its original release.
