- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2024My autistic brother enjoys Thomas and the price was great. I purchased from this seller a few times.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2010I bought Hero of the Rails for my 2-year old. He is an absolute Thomas fanatic!
This movie does not dissappoint. Initially, I was not a fan of the CGI. After watching what seemed like endless hours of Thomas minatures and voiced-over character dolls in the older shows, it seemed that was the only proper way to watch Thomas. The CGI would simply cause "confusion and delay".
Was I wrong! CGI breathes new life into this series. The characters have lost that "homey" feel of the minatures, but this is more than made up for by the quality of the graphics. The scenes flow very well, and I must admit, they hold your attention better than "The Great Discovery".
The storyline is very believable: a broken-down and forgotten engine is made new again. This seems to be a recurring theme in many Thomas episodes: Something old is made new. Or, something old is worth keeping around, e.g., steam engines in the age of diesel.
The characters are great! Some of the voices are bit overboard, such as Gordon's "High & Mighty", and Henry's whine. Spencer's voice is perfect, as are Hiro's and Emily's. Personally, I don't care for Thomas's voice. It seems a bit too youngish, but considering who this DVD is aimed at, it works for kids. As was mentioned in an earlier post, Victor and Kevin are a match made in Heaven: the seasoned veteran and the new kid in the shop. Perfect!
Without getting too specific and spoiling the movie for all, I will just say this movie is great for kids and adults. I have even snuck it into the DVD player when no one was around...
Buy it. You won't regret it!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2020A very excellent Thomas & Friends production, and the first one to be computer animated. I’m writing this review in 2020 after purchasing the digital HD version, but I’ve had the DVD since its release in 2009. 2004-2012 was a very hit-or-miss time for Thomas, but this movie is a huge hit. Kids are sure to love it. Somehow, this film captures the magic and heart of the original Awdry stories (rare for this time period) but also completely revitalizes Thomas in a fresh and new way.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2010I agree with all the 4 and 5 star reveiws here. Our son loves it. The CGI makes for much better facial expressions, of course. I'm not sure if for 2 to 5 year old kids, this really matters though. Our 5yo son called me the first time he watched this movie to come watch it with him. He wanted to show me how Thomas was "speaking". So it certainly got his attention, and he was exited about it. But he still also enjoy his other Thomas dvd (without CGI). He has Thomas & Friends: Calling All Engines! and I hear/read ......Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery is great too. But lately he's a lot in the pirate theme, so he's watching Playmobil: The Secret of Pirate Islanda lot.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2023For me this is the final Thomas the tank engine adventure ever, a wonderful goodbye to the character for me as the show would continue to be ruined. The reputation for Thomas has never been the same post 2000 but this movie along with a few before and after still keep up the respect it deserves.
Besides the irritating narration from Michael Brandon I find this movie a delightful story of the engines coming together to help a long lost respectable and lovely engine in need. The individual VA’s do a great job and I love the chase scenes they came up with, everyone feels lightning fast! Good show… once a long time ago
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2015We have many Thomas the Tank Engine videos. This is the best one. If you are a fan of Hiro - "master of the railway" - you'll love this one too. In general Thomas the Train videos are absolutely loved by little ones - mine have loved from the ages of 2 to 5 so far. They are educational in many direct and indirect ways in very positive, conservative and non-political ways. They are very appropriate for the little ones which is an amazing feat in an age when so much liberal, immoral trash floods our movies, TV screens and society overall. These videos are a little safe haven of enjoyment and learning - I even like them as an adult!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film for all Thomas fans young or old!
Thomas & Friends - Hero Of The Rails [DVD] [2009]
A really good film for all the family, girls, boys, young or old. Kept us all entertained for the duration which is no mean feat for a two and three year old with minimal attention spans.
In this feature length film, Thomas stumbles across a new friend 'Hiro' who needs his help - Thomas enlists the help of his trusted friends back at Tidmouth sheds to get Hiro back on the rails after years rusting in a siding all alone. The problem is they must not let nosey old Spencer find out as he will tell the fat controller and Hiro might get scrapped! Fun and games ensue as they all work together to get the parts, narrowly escaping run-ins with both Spencer and the Fat Contoller too. Percy even manages to lose his mail trucks in all the drama.
Guaranteed to be watched over and over again until little Thomas runs out of steam!

5.0 out of 5 stars Talking Thomas - yes please!
My 3 year old son LOVES the new "talking Thomas" and was delighted with his new Christmas DVDs. We also got him "Misty Island Rescue" but he likes "Hero of the Rails" the best. He recites bits of the film over and over when he is playing with his trains and is already begging me to buy him a Hiro train. My elderly father was with us on Christmas day and he loved the film too! He thought it was a great storyline and we could hardly tear him away from the film to eat his brussel sprouts.
