- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2020I knew virtually nothing about this Bette Davis film when I ordered it, except that it featured one of my favorite stars.
I have most of Davis's films on DVD, but didn't have "Payment On Demand" - until now. (A high-quality B&W digital transfer, but no subtitles available on this disc.)
This is a well-crafted RKO film, with an interesting and nuanced story about a strong-willed, socially aspiring wife, divorce... and loneliness.
Also, it's memorable for its numerous flashback scenes depicting a "younger" Bette and her fiancé/husband, Barry Sullivan and their often turbulent climb up the social ladder. Two daughters, and their amours, round out the family drama - along with a cast of interesting characters.
Excellent direction by Curtis Bernhardt; costumes by Edith Head; and a fine music score by Victor Young.
There's a commendable lack of "Davis hysteria" and "chewing the scenery" here (but a bit of the usual Davis hand-wringing!) - just a very well-written and subtlety-acted story about one family's marriage struggles and bittersweet resolutions. But whatever the situation, Bette is always superbly Bette!
The film's ending is touching and satisfying.
If you are not familiar with this excellent 1951 film, I encourage you to check it out. I don't think you'll be disappointed, and you might even discover a NEW FAVORITE Bette Davis film, like I have.
HAPPY VIEWING.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2023I found this title accidentally, and so glad I bought it. I had not seen much of Barry Sullivan -this is a nice departure for him from Westerns, and there's Thelma Lou from Mayberry! This must have been an intense, even shocking movie back in the day - divorce! I loved the way the sets came together as if stage settings. Naturally, Miss Davis was superb! All in all, a nice little find! I recommend.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2023Never tire of Bette Davis' films. She was a truly talented woman.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2014As a Davis fan, it's worth the time to see any Davis "performance". Even though this production had it's "producer's" problems, and was ultimately cut-and spliced up to the moment it was opening, it captures a few moments of pretty good (Davis) acting. To paraphrase some (singer's) reviews, Davis could "read" the Los Angeles phone book on stage and capture an audience, and maybe get another Oscar nomination. Not one of my favorites, but it holds its own in my movie collection (and on the shelf with about 80 other Davis DVDs now available).
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2023Love Betty Davis and this movie is very relatable when it comes to the breakdown of a longtime marriage.

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD MELODRAMA - NOT THE USUAL BETTE DAVIS VEHICLE
This was a good film, but Bette was not quite herself. More subdued, no tantrums, and I was hoping for more exuberance. That said, she made her character both selfish and sympathetic, and when she breaks down at one point, full of regret for a life misspent, I almost cheered. In fact, I read a review of this film somewhere, and it described the movie as a typical Joan Crawford vehicle, except it's Bette Davis in the role. Barry Sullivan also gave a quiet but impressive performance, as the noble but put-upon husband, a part which used his acting talents to good effect. So, all in all an excellent movie, but it takes a while to adjust to the unexpected.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not great...
Not Bette's best work. I fact, the movie was quite boring in parts, and never really developed fully. She basically "phones in" her performance, and you could tell her heart wasn't in it. I am glad to have in my collection, however, as it is a hard movie to find.
