- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2011Melody Gardot in my humble opinion is one of the most sensual singer-songwriters that I have had the pleasure of discovering. She has a hauntingly beautiful voice and she sure knows how to express her work in the most melodious way, her style which is a combination of Pop, Folk, Jazz, Gypsy Jazz, Viennese Waltzes, Washboard Blues, and Bluegrass with hints of samba is most unique. She gravitates towards blues not because she is a blues singer but because of the sheer emotions she is able to put into her songs. Just like the melody itself, Melody does not restrict herself to a single genre, she crosses from one genre to another in the same song which will basically make her work very appealing to most listeners irrespective of which genre they belong to. She comes through like a breath of fresh air in the world of polluted music.
On this album there is synergy between her singing and the music accompanying her voice, it could not have been better. The choice of instruments, the string arrangements, for which the credit goes to Vince Mendoza who is known for his work with Larry Klien on Joni Mitchell albums, and the lush orchestration make this a very pleasurable experience. The quality of recording is exemplary and no wonder the album was nominated a Grammy in the Best Engineered category (Al Shimitt).
The sense of longing for the beloved in her works is intense and one can feel the emotional turmoil she may be going through considering her past, the breakup with her friend, the accident and divorce of her parents but she persevered against abject adversity. She got her fair share of bad luck at such a young age of just 25 which has made her more mature beyond her 25 years on the planet and it certainly reflects in her works, rather if I dare say it, works of art.
Her music that you listen to is in its most purest form, whether she is in a studio recording it and later you hear it on a record or she is singing live on stage in a concert and last but not least on a talk show. Her voice comes through with uncanny accuracy and sounds the same no matter what the venue. How many artists you have heard thus far can sound like that to you? If you happen to be an audiophile like yours truly you got to experience this album on tube amplification and planar speakers, it will render goosebumps even on the soles of your feet and not just all over your body.
This album was produced by Larry Klien (ex-husband of Joni Mitchell) who is himself an accomplished musician and has him playing bass on three of the tracks here. He has gone on to mainly produce albums for quiet a few female singer-songwriters. He also produced Grammy winning Herbie Hancock's album River: The Joni Letters. In 2010 Klein was nominated for Producer of the Year for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards for production on several albums. This album is produced to near perfection as any album could possibly be.
Melody was asked by an interviewer "You are very young at 24, what is the greatest lesson life has taught you thus far? Her response was, "The greatest joy that any of us will ever experience is from serving others, so when you serve others and then you serve yourself your life is enriched" Melody is serving her best to you in the shape of enchanting music and that too on a silver platter, should you not acknowledge her gift by giving her a listen? Quoting the very words from a very dear friend who I share the love of music with "If chocolate could be heard, rather than tasted........it would sound like Melody Gardot!"
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2024Bought this album 3+ months ago after hearing one song, then learning it had won a grammy for best contemporary jazz album in 2010 when Melody was somewhere around 25 years old. She had recently concluded extensive therapy after a bicycle accident at age 19 that nearly killed her. So, I put the CD on my fairly decent audio system, turned up the volume and had OMG!! moments one after another. NEVER have I heard such passion & romance from a vocalist who writes her own material and delivers with a sensuality that's unrivaled (in my experience). I'm 71. Raised on rock and blues, a die-hard R&B fan, and a regular at Dimitrious Jazz Alley in Seattle (5 - 10 shows a year). NEVER have I heard a female voice that literally pulls the emotion right out of my soul. The songs "Lover Undercover", "The Rain", "Our Love is Easy" and "My One and Only Thrill" are extraordinary in terms of lyrical impact and jaw-dropping vocal, but there's really not a bad song on the record. If you lean toward artists like Nora Jones, Billie Eilish (or Holiday), Etta James...pick this album up. It's rapidly ascending onto my top 10 all-time favorites list.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2010Several weeks ago, I had never heard of Melody Gardot. Amazon's customers who bought this product also bought - led me here.
Exploration reveals that Melody Gardot was in a serious nearly fatal accident several years ago, when her bicycle was hit by a car. She suffered brain damage, lost her short term memory, and for a while the use of her voice. The doctor told her that musical therapy was one of the few things that would help restore her neural pathways. Today she walks with a cane, and wears slightly darkened glasses because of lingering photosensitivity.
I have to say this album is remarkable. Not only is Melody a great singer, she has a very expressive voice, and the distinctive nature of this album is the mood. Every note, every chord, every phrase goes to create a mood and an atmosphere.
When you listen to this album you open a doorway to a new world of experience. If you're like me you might imagine yourself down in the basement of a club, as you walk through the door there's a sultry singer on the stage, you see a flash of blond hair, you hear the subtle sounds of the bass, the brushing sounds of the drum, the slap of fingernail on nylon string, and you sit rooted to the spot as the melody washes over you, and the mood takes you wherever it takes you. You have just entered the world of Melody Gardot.
It's not as bright as daylight, nor as dark as darkness, it's a curious in between place, perhaps a reflection of the slightly polarised lens through which she views the world. And the music is wonder inspiring, some of the songs sound like they are already standards, although she wrote all the songs except Over The Rainbow, to which she her unique rendition. I have to give her 10 out of 10 for the songwriting. It's rare these days to hear an artist who is also a good songwriter. A particular favorite is Lover Undercover, and Les Etoiles, although all the songs are really good.
The outstanding string arrangements on this album were done by Vince Mendoza.
If you're like me, the songs are somewhat mysterious, and the more you listen to them, the more they grow on you. So, if you find yourself in the position I was in several weeks ago, go ahead- buy it. I think you'll love it.
I hope you found this review helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Discazo
Llevaba tiempo detrás de este vinilo. Es un pedazo de álbum. Muy buenas canciones destacando Baby I'm a fool, que fue la canción con la que descubrí a esta cantante.
El disco en sí no tiene mucho más.

5.0 out of 5 stars Schöne Stimme!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, everyone should have this
This album in LP is beautiful and fantastic! I have already had the CD. I like both.
For the LP, beware the sleeve. The strong electrostatic makes no easy to take out the record. I suggest to store the record in another sleeve. Be careful when taking it out at the first time.
