Editorial Reviews
Although they've toured together and renewed their friendship, this is the first recording by Olson and Louris since Olson left the Jayhawks in 1995. What would become READY FOR THE FLOOD was recorded at Sage & Sound Studios in Hollywood with friend Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. Louris had called in Robinson, who happened to be in town at that point, for "vibe support" and he ended up producing the album; he also appears on the album playing harmonica and contributing backing vocals. READY FOR THE FLOOD captures the stripped down, finger picked guitar playing and Laurel Canyon sound of an earlier time, with allusions to English folk Bert Jansch, Nick Drake, John Renbourne, whom both Mark and Gary had both been getting into independently and a simpler, live recording technique where capturing the right vibe was as important as the sound. It's an album that only two career musicians and friends could make organic, intuitive and loosely confident, heartfelt and moving, echoing with the combined experience of two kindred spirits reuniting to do what they do -and love - best.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2009The Jayhawks quietly introduced Americana to mainstream America. "Hollywood Town Hall" and "Tomorrow The Green Grass" introduced Mark Olson and Gary Louris as a sort of sagebrush Lennon and McCartney. Suddenly Olson was bound for Joshus Tree with then wife Victoria Williams to become a Creekdipper. Louris was left to helm the band and took them in a more pop direction with spectacular results but increasingly diminished returns. Both men rememerged with solo albums which proved that neither had lost a step. Behind the scenes, they were resuming a friendship and with the help of Crowe Chris Robinson, have released "Ready For The Flood". The result is an understated, acoustic wonderment. Olson sounds ready to re-enter the public eye and the two men harmonize like a high desert Everly Brothers. It's not exactly the Jayhawks and that's just fine. Put it on, sing along and smile. A lot. I admit that I didn't even remember that Chris Robinson helmed Louris' "Vagabonds". Robinson shows a deft touch at the controls opting for a gentle approach the accentuates the talents of two men whose time has come. Again.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2009I planned on giving this album 3-stars, but I looked at the song titles & remembered the fractured lyrics & had to go back and make it 4-stars. Don't be mistaken: this is NOT Hollywood Town Hall or Tomorrow The Green Grass, but anytime these 2 get together to lay down tracks is worth hearing (kinda like Strummer/Jones or Lennon/McCartney.) It lacks the gusto of a Jayhawks release, and the songs aren't immediate classics, so i wanted to say 3 stars. But then when the lyrics crawl around in your head so much you have to bump it up, this record (though musically fairly basic) does grow on you. It's the hallmark of a great band that they never ever sound like the typical representative of their genre, even though they helped define it (alt-country.) The Clash were like that too: the quintessential punk band that so transcended their art-form that referring to them as such would be an offensive transgression. So enjoy this, and know that if they stick together we could have even better memories ahead.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2021Olson and Louris together are pure magic. Thier voices and guitar playing are in sync and provide a musical backdrop which is rivaled by very few others. The songs on "Ready for the Flood" are heartfelt and melancholy, brash and beautiful. I hope these two phenomenal songwriters can work out thier differences and come together again, because a union like this is hard to replicate. A sensational recording.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2010The music from this CD tickles my cortical neurons all the way to my hair roots. Makes me close my eyes, smile, and feel that life is good. Mark and Gary's voices marry to perfection, and their tempo... is my tempo. Slow and swell. I thought for a second about using 4 stars instead of 5, because the quality of the sound on some of the tracks is not as good as what one would expect in 2010. Seems like the bass goes a bit in overdrive in a few songs.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2014The Jayhawks are one of my favorite groups. This CD is good for just listening, but lacks some of the outstanding work of Gary's Jayhawk work.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2008It doesn't sound like the Jayhawks, other than in the obvious vocal "univoice" this duo was known for on those albums. It's two fellas singing and playing together (actually recorded without headphones). Lots of fingerpicking on accoustic guitars.
As is, it's simply wonderful. Plainly presented, it was recorded mostly "live" so any "mistakes" were left alone by producer Chris Robinson.
You should own this. Seeing the live performance of this material confirmed it's as good as anything they did with the Jayhawks, but this one's a whole lot mellower. Think Everly Bros., Simon & Garfunkel, America and Gram Parsons by way of Incredible String Band. Recorded before each of their solo albums, which, incidently, are worth getting for sure as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2012I didn't even know Olson and Louris did this masterpiece. Thanks to Amazon for recommending it. If this was an album, I'd already have replace it with the grooves worn out! The heartfelt harmonies, awesome song writing, underrated guitar work, superb production (In HDCD, no less!) only compliment the stunning vocals of these two artists. This CD is Alt/Country's greatest secret! This is the CD that comes out when I want to blow away by audiophile friends....
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2009I've been a fan of these guys since the beginning.. Jayhawks post Mark..incredible; Mark's work brilliant w/o Gary . These guys both get better all the time... but I gotta say that i love what they come up with when joining forces, Stay close we love you...Oh yeah...in case you haven't followed Mark, he's got a great catalog go there!

4.0 out of 5 stars Midwestern Simon & Garfunkel
These guys are like a Midwestern Simon & Garfunkel on this release, with delicate acoustic playing, framed by the Spoon in June by the light of the Moon lyrics. Quite enjoyable, but missing some of that tight ensemble playing they normally exhibited in the day job with the Jayhawks.

5.0 out of 5 stars qualité musicale
les membres de the Jayhawks nous produisent un CD de qualité avec des racines West Coast proches des Grateful Dead, Crosby Stills Nash & Young et autres Buffalo Springfield dont on ne se lasse jamais

4.0 out of 5 stars 無事リリース
Jayhawks

4.0 out of 5 stars
