Top reviews from the United States

The success of "American Idol" spawned numerous talent show imitators, including CMT's "Can You Duet." Despite the ratings success of several of these shows, few of the winners have actually gone on to great success in the music industry. Knowing that the husband-wife duo of Joey and Rory earned their recording deal from such a show - which they did not even win - I was skeptical.

By midway through the album's first cut, I was hooked.

Joey Martin, whose first (solo) effort was never widely released, has a natural, pleasant voice, which is reminiscent less of her own idol (Dolly Parton,) than of country icon Loretta Lynn. Martin does not display a wide vocal range (though I suspect she could,) but instead manages an emotional range that pulls the listener in without overpowering the lyrics, or forcing the sort of pop-influenced histrionics that have so polluted Nashville in recent years. It is a rare vocal talent that can be, on its face, so understated, yet at the same time, so unique and so utterly captivating.

Husband Rory Feek, while capable with his harmonies, is, more importantly, the (co)writer of the majority of the album's tracks. Already an accomplished writer, having penned such chart-toppers as Blake Shelton's "Some Beach," Clay Walker's "Chain of Love," and Jimmy Wayne's "I Will," Feek's strengths, beyond catchy melodies, are his story-telling and his humor. The album's first single, "Cheater, Cheater," makes it clear that he knows both his audience and his wife. The crisp chords and clever lyrics work as well as they do mostly due to Joey's unforced charm and likeability. A woman wronged should not make us smile, but she does.

Covers are usually safe choices to fill in an album, but Joey and Rory jump right into the deep end of the pool, taking on the classic rock anthem "Free Bird." Having grown up in an era where there was hardly a party not highlighted by teenaged boys playing air guitar to Lynyrd Skynyrd's ode to youthful wanderlust, it is difficult to imagine the song performed any other way. Yet, to borrow a cliche, they "make it their own," turning 1970s stadium rock self-actualization into a more timeless and introspective song about a wandering soul. It has to be heard to be believed - and Joey and Rory will make you believe.

If I were to note any negative at all, it would be the studio chatter included on "Heart of the Wood." Although interesting, it was also a little distracting on what was otherwise one of the album's strongest tracks. However, on a debut effort like this one, pointing this out is really just nitpicking.

Reality TV gets a well-deserved rap for being mostly fake, but there can be no doubt that Joey and Rory are for real.

I absolutely love this CD. It is so refreshing to hear real country music again. Joey's voice is amazing and I could listen to her sing all day and never tire of it. It's hard to pick favorites off this CD because all the songs are just so good. Although topping the list would have to be Sweet Emmy Lou (Beyond words on this one) and Free bird (I love the way they changed this song and her voice just fits it perfectly). Rory harmonizes just right and never over powers Joey's voice. It really is a nice blend and so pleasing to the ears. There is not a song on here that could be considered a filler in any way. They mix the upbeat and the ballads perfectly. After listening to their music, I doubt I will turn on country stations anytime soon because this CD is what real country music is about. I would love to hear them do an album of some of the old classics. I will also be ordering Joey's solo album and their other two albums out. I've heard her sing a few of the songs on youtube and it sounds well worth the investment. Keep the music coming!

Like most of us I 'discovered' this delighful duo on their Overstock commercials. I liked their chemistry and music on the commercials enough to go in search of just who these people were. My search led me to Joey + Rory and I found they had a record out. I was delighted by what I heard. I found their music to be good old fashioned straight ahead country. Joey has crystal clear tone and her voice delivers a strong story line on these recordings. Rory is already a well established and popular song writer, but his talented voice is also on display on this record. He has a perfect and harmoniously complimentary voice to add the counter point to Joey's exuberant singing. If you are not a fan of country music these recordings may not be your cup of tea, but if you like a good country duet with a story to tell this will be the best you've heard since George and Tammy.

These two just keep getting better. They are true stars in good country music. Listened to country through lots of changes -- some better than others. Seems to me the true stars take from the roots, honoring them, then celebrate them today & hold them out for the future. Joey + Rory do that beautifully. Not a music critic & don't pretend to be. Just know what I like and I like this! So, take a listen & hold on 'cause these two stars are rising.

Once again, they deliver a dozen great songs and this duo never disappoints. I am a big fan of their lyrics and as soon as I heard the words to the first track, "Play The Song", I just knew Rory Feek wrote it. I agree completely, BTW. Their instrumental riffs never disappoint either. They are always first class. "The Tune of a Twenty Dollar Bill" really showcases their musicianship on this album. Great songwriting is magic but you still need a really good magician to pull off any great trick - with Joey and Rory, you get two of the best. When you put these two together, simply put, it truly is pure magic. Just throw in their CD and be entertained, amazed, and inspired.

Joey was, and now is, a real ANGEL in this world, and now in Heaven. She and Rory were truly the Perfect example of what
God would love us ALL to be!! Their singing together is totally beautiful, as is Joey's when singing without Rory's wonderful and perfect harmony. Joey truly sounds just like what I would expect an angel TO sound like. I cannot even imagine anyone Not LOVING any and ALL of the truly BELOVED CD and DVD recordings WE are truly BLESSED to have in our own homes. 5.0 out of 5 stars Bei uns nahezu unbekannt
Reviewed in Germany on May 1, 2016
Toller Gesang.
Anspieltipps: Sweet Emmylou und Heart of the wood (das schönste Lied was ich seit langem gehört habe).

I had never heard of Joey and Rory but downloaded one of their albums (album numer two) because it was cheap. What a find! Went straight back to amazon to buy the other albums. I dont think I can pick a favourite song as they are all fantastic. This is country back with heart and soul....and guaranteed to give you both a laugh and a cry with the amazing vocals and beautiful lyrics. You could put these albums on contant repeat and still never get bored!
