Product Description
From the mind of Paul Henning, creator of THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, came this charming sitcom that aired from 1963 to '70. Set in the fictional Hootersville, the show followed the goings-on at the Shady Rest Hotel, run by Kate Bradley (Bea Benaderet) and her three gorgeous daughters: blond, boy-crazy Billie Jo (Jeannine Riley); literary, intellectual Bobbie Jo (Pat Woodell); and redheaded tomboy Betty Joe (Linda Kaye). The only way to reach the hotel was via the Cannonball Express, which was run by Charley Pratt (Smiley Burnette) and Floyd Smoot (Rufe Davis). Starring Jeannine Riley, Pat Woodell, Bea Benaderet, Linda Kaye, Edgar Buchanan, Special Features: multi-disc set Full Frame, 1.33 Audio: Mono English Running Time 974 Minutes.

Songwriter Paul Simon said it best: Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance. Especially when that train is the Hooterville Cannonball ("the train thats loved by all"), whose heralding whistle sets this charming series classic theme song in motion. An instant hit in its first season, Petticoat Junction, like The Andy Griffith Show is the chance to spend quality time with "some decent folks." The series is set at the bucolic, but run-down, Shady Rest Hotel, remotely situated between Hooterville and Pixley (the Mt. Pilot to Hootervilles Mayberry). The Shady Rest has seen better days. The last time there were three guests at one time, someone observes, was when "Mrs. Pritchard gave birth to twins in the lobby." Widow Kate Bradley (Bea Benaderet, the voice of Betty Rubble on The Flintstones) runs the place with her three beautiful daughters, flirtatious Billie Jo (Jeannine Riley), bookworm Bobbie Jo (Pat Woodall), and pigtailed tomboy Betty Jo (Linda Kaye). Kates finagling Uncle Joe (Edgar Buchanan) complicates matters with ill-fated get rich schemes. Other colorful characters include Cannonball engineers Charlie (Smiley Burnette) and Floyd (Rufe Davis), more interested in lifes simple pleasures, like fishing, than running the train on time, and Sam Drucker (Frank Cady), the "self-described general store keeper, notary republic, and town wit." Throughout the first season, Kate and company thwart efforts by Homer Bedloe (Charles Lane), "the most ruthless man since Ivan the Terrible," to put the Shady Rest out of business and shut down the Cannonball, the antiquated steam train that time, and the C.F. & W Railroad forgot. Created by Paul Henning, Petticoat Junction is not as widely syndicated or popularly known as his other series, The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres, but its a pleasure to rediscover. One episode for the '60s time capsule, broadcast just a little over a month after the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, is "The Ladybugs" in which Beatlemania hits the valley, and Uncle Joe transforms the Bradley girls into a girl rock group. Dennis Hopper, of all people, appears as a beatnik in the episode, "Bobby Joe and the Beatnik." Vintage TV fans will have fun spotting Ken "Eddie Haskell" Osmond as a suitor for Billie Jo in "The Genghis Keane Story" (the same episode introduces future Green Acres scene stealer Hank Patterson as pit-toting farmer Fred Ziffel); Sheila James (Zelda on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis) as a fellow Ladybug, and Steve Franken (Chatsworth Osborne, Jr. on Gillis) as Homer Bedloes chip off the old block son, who has a change of heart after spending time at the Shady Rest in "Bedloe and Son." This set benefits from episode introductions and affectionate recollections by Kaye and Woodall. So, like the song says, forget about your cares, it is time to relax at the Junction. As Bedloe, Jr. proclaims, "A fella could get used to a life like this." --Donald Liebenson

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2012These DVD's have been out for some time but I have just finished viewing the first two seasons which are in black and white. They would go to colour in season three.Unfortunately, the rest of the seasons, are not out on DVD.
This is a gentle comedy series which you wish really existed with it's rich and warm characters.
It tells the story of a mother, three daughters and their uncle who run the Shady Rest Hotel. Most of the stories revolve around the girls growing up,their uncle Joe, played by Edgar Buchanan,in his endless attempts to get rich with one scheme or another and Kate Bradley, the mother, played by Bea Benedaret, who runs the Shady rest.An ongoing plot involves them from trying to stop the vice-president from the railroad,Homer Bedlow, played by the excellent Charles Lane, from closing down the spur line from Hooterville to Pixley which brings people to Petticoat Junction on the Cannonball train.
This show was created by Paul Henning who had created "The Beverley Hillbillies" the year before. It was created for Bea Benederet who had appeared on hillbillies as Jehtro's mother.
Extra's include interviews with Lisa Kaye Henning and Pat Woodell who played Bobbie-Jo in the first two seasons. Also introductions to each episode by both of them as well as a photo gallery.I really enjoy hearing about the behind-the -scenes stories by the actors or actresses of the show itself.
In the second season, a new member would join the cast.Higgins the dog.He steals the show in every scene he is in.
If you liked "The Beverly Hillbillies" you will like this as well as "Green Acres" a companion piece to this show whose characters would appear in both series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2020This is a really fun family friendly DVD series. There are a lot of new and modern type of programs out there, but there's something extra special about these classic shows where actors really had to be good actors because editing these types of programs took a lot of additional work and money years ago. There's something really organic about these type of classic programs that make them really fun to watch. You really get to like each of the characters. Currently there are only a couple of Seasons available and I'm hoping that someday they will finish the rest of the series on DVD.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2021petticoat junction is just one show I loved to watch when I was a girl although it was just a show but it showed how a family was a family children had respect and more obedient than children these days, I always liked the simple living of this show as well as Green Acres and others watching these dvds brings back the country girl within me although I live in the city petticoat junction is plain old fashioned fun for me
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2013This is the best season of the show. Which is not saying much, since the show is one of the slowest sitcoms in history. "And that's Unle Joe He's a movin' kind of slow at the junction" Yep, that about says it for the show. Not that it's not funny, at times. I like it when Bedlow tries to stop the Cannonball. Those are the best episodes. I do like the settting. The Shady Rest looks like a great place to stay but is it a hotel or a bed and breakfast? And how does Kate stay in busines? You almost never see a guest. And what is this about her trying to get a convention to stay there. A convention. In Hooterville? And what is up with the girls swimming in the water tank? I hope that water is only for the Cannonball and not drinking. And what is it with the dog? He doesnt even have a name. Just dog. The best part of the show is Bea. She was great and the center of the show. She was a great talent. When she died in the 5th season, it really went down hill. I want all 7 seasons of th show, if they ever release them all, after all it is FAR better then the crap on today. But it doesnt stack up to Beverly Hillbillies or Green Acers. BTW Season 3 just came out on DVD. The show looks great in color
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2009Petticoat Junction is as good now as when my wife and I watched it as kids. The DVD's are packaged very well and the digital quality is excellent. We have started buying all the old TV shows we watched as kids. Our 10 year old is enjoying them as are we. With what little quality programing cable and satellite TV offers today but with rates going up at least once every year we are seriously considering doing away with our satellite and going with local FREE digital broadcast channels AND the DVD's of the old shows we all enjoy. The DVD's actually end up costing less than the satellite and the quality and choice is so much better.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2009I remember watching Petticoat Junction as a kid and thinking it was pretty good, so when I saw that it was coming out on DVD I bought it right away. Does the show hold up after 40 odd years? Somewhat, the first few shows focus mostly on the railroad trying to shut down the Cannonball and thus putting the hotel out of business. While the show does have some down home charm, Edgar Buchannan was doing his best Barney Fife/second bananna imatation and was pretty much wasted in the role. One thing to consider, this was the age of a lot of shows in a season, this set has 36-ish episodes, and after about 3 you will be looking for something else to watch for a while. Best in small doses. There are bonus' included featuring interviews with the first Bobby Jo and Billie Jo who also do introductions to most episodes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Petticoat Junction Season 1
Series was made by Paul Henning as a vehicle for Bea Benederet (the voice of Betty Rubble) when she turned down the lead role of Granny in the Beverly Hillbillies. Not as funny as Beverly Hillbillies but well worth watching, it has it's moments and Edgar Buchanan steals the show as Uncle Joe. The series also ties in with Green Acres as well as loosely with the Beverly Hillbillies(though each series is separate). Only season one and two have been released so far but hopefully the later 5 seasons will follow. When they do get released, I'll be there at the front of the queue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simpler Times , almost comfort food
This series would be considered simplistic by todays" video game" standards, but I find it comfortably entertaining. The episodes
story content continues from episode to episode, for instance the ongoing conflict with the head office that owns the local
(steam locomotive ) railway ( which happens to be the only way to get around in the valley). Gruff execs descend on the valley
repeatedly threatening to close down the line, only to be charmed by the locals. Kate runs the " Shady Rest " Hotel with her
crusty uncle and three daughters, providing the setting for the comedy. This series is "set" in the same valley as "Green Acres"
and shares some characters , but" Petticoat Junction" is "family oriented comedy" vs. "Green Acres" Monty Pythonesque
off the wall antics. Recommended for those that are entertained by nostalgic simpler times.

5.0 out of 5 stars PETTICOAT JUNCTION season one
First of all, the series itself is a very amusing comedy, and in my opinion, well worth the purchase. I found the picture and sound very good; and AMAZON was at its usual standard: just great.
