Product description

WILSON CASSANDRA LOVERLY

Amazon.com

Cassandra Wilson's Loverly is something more than just her unique spin on songs from long ago. For this set, she has assembled an impressive core group of musicians to accompany her: Jason Moran on piano, Lonnie Plaxico on acoustic upright bass, and Marvin Sewell on guitar. Her low and hypnotic contralto glides so knowingly through each song that they would seem to be of her own creation--but aren't. To be sure, each of the 12 songs found on Loverly are stamped with her trademark Delta-baby, bluesy style (most noticeably on "Dust My Broom"). But Wilson and company have taken it one step further by turning tear-jerkers such as "Til There Was You" and "The Very Thought of You" into sultry bubblers that invite ballads into the bedroom. Throw in the moody "Black Orpheus" and her funky, down-to-business take on "St. James Infirmary," and it doesn't take long to realize that Loverly is a complete attempt to satisfy the soul; a sexy mesh that dares rival anything Cassandra Wilson has released before it. --Eric C.P. Martin

I purchased this based on a recommendation from TAS. Thanks to TAS this is a welcome addition to my music collection. I love the Latin flavored jazz melodies and harmonics performed with feeling. To top it all off, a big silky smooth voice coming from a small woman. Amazing voice with lots of emotion. This is my first exposure to Cassandra Wilson. This CD is fantastic and I will be on the lookout for her future projects.

I never really heard that song till there was Cassandra Wilson. Wow. "Loverly" is a favorite cd of mine. Only one track, I can't abide (a style of blues my brain finds torturous). But all the other tracks: gold. A delight!

I saw Cassandra live at the Blue Note a few years back and since then I've been singing her praises to anyone who would listen. Her voice is so rich and smooth and I love what she does with familiar songs - all those twists and turns into unexpected places and spaces, the bends along the way - I love the Cassandra ride. My sister is a big jazz fan and I bought this CD for her as a Christmas gift. She loved it!!!

    Cassandra Wilson at her best.
Wonderful, interesting interpretations of well-known songs with a team of musician who really bring out the best of Cassandra.
My favorite: Caravan! Rarely presented with such cool.
Contrary to some of the other reviewers I judge Ms Wilson's detached and apparently uncommitted way of delivering the songs as a great asset of this CD.

I have every other CD Ms. Wilson has recorded & love them each in their own way, but this one - I can't. I tried on several different occasions to give this one some air & finally decided to let it go. Mind you, I do own it cause I was trying to keep the collection going (cause she IS good & everyone should have at least two of her in their collection), but not today. Not this one. For some reason, it seems rather bland & she sounds bored - nothing moved me. I'll wait until her next one comes around to give her some luv :-)

This CD seems to be recorded 'live' in the studio. You can hear Wilson directing the band whilst singing in certain places. Also, her while other musicians are soloing - you can hear her jovial self courting them with little phrases as they jam - thru open mics during the recording. Hence the production sounds a bit amateur-ish. Perhaps that is precisely what Wilson is going for. The song choices are certainly agreeable.

I saw this band live just after they recorded this album in Florida and the tunes sounded a bit more refined then. Overall an enjoyable ensemble of musicians and tunes. I still prefer the Thunderbird album, personally. Maybe my hopes were too high...

This is a wonderful CD by Cassandra Wilson that illuminates her talents and provides wonderful music to enjoy.
    Such a treat!
Nicely done, the vocal and musical arrangements, the selections, and the soul of the artist provide an environment of listening pleasure.

I have enjoyed some of Ms. Wilson's recordings in the past (e.g. "Blue Light Till Dawn") so this album of standards seemed like it might be enjoyable. Let me put my reaction as simply as possible. This is perhaps the worst purchase that I've made in years - and I buy dozens of CDs and DVDs every year. The arrangements are dreadful. The vocal style is dreadful. The phrasing is dreadful. In total - you guesed it - IT'S DREADFUL!!! I wouldn't even use this CD as a coaster. It might foul my drink.
