I grew up on The Partridge Family. This, their first album, was released in 1970. I was a mere 9 years old. I love all The Partridge Family albums but this one is certainly the best. Granted, everyone in the group did not actually sing but we were graced with original vocals by David Cassidy and Shirley Jones. This collection is pure bubble-gum pop but it also proves to be a perfectly made pop album.
There are some very good songs here and the selection is very eclectic with even some hints of a slight r@b sound. The set opens with BRAND NEW ME a very expressive pop rocker. We have hits POINT ME IN THE DIRECTION OF ALBUQUERQUE and the infamous I THINK I LOVE YOU. Funny, but I THINK I LOVE YOU is not one of the very best of The Partridge Family songs. Standouts here are I CAN FEEL YOUR HEARTBEAT, BANDALA which has good duet vocals by David and Shirley, SOMEBODY WANTS TO LOVE YOU and the upbeat, excellent SINGING MY SONG.
The first three albums by The Partridge Family all contained some quality music but this is the best. it is an excellent set and the music truly stands the test of time. It shows how bubble gum pop can be truly infectious and of high quality. The remastering here sounds great. Purchase and enjoy.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2006I heard all these songs when they first came out from my sister's record player in the next room. Didn't think much of 'em.
Fast forward 30 years; I now have a master's degree in music. Something makes me buy this CD. And you know what? These are GREAT SONGS! (Of course, let's recognize that they were written by some of the top songwriters of the day, and sung and performed by top studio people, including the Love Generation.)
But it's a shame, in a way, that these songs don't reach a wider audience simply because people think that if it's a Partridge Family song, it's got to be stupid. No way. These are great examples of the songwriter's craft.
I adore Only a Moment Ago (a poignant story about the end of the 1960s); I'm on the Road (tremendous cruising tune); and To Be Lovers (an absolutely stunning background vocal arrangement). But the best for me is I Really Want to Know You; it has a sweet, sweet melody and performance, with some of the most romantic lyrics I've ever heard: "I want to look behind the mirror of your eyes... and see the secret world your words disguise... the birthplace of your sighs."
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2016Yup! That's right. I have come full circle! I listen to Led Zep, classic southern rock, rap and everything in between, INCLUDING The Partridge Family and I'll tell you why: some of THE best music ever written. The words? Eh, pop-ish. But the music? Look, if The Guess Who, America, 3 Dog Night, BTO or any number of 70's rock artists did hese songs the'd be classics and CHART TOPPERS! Listen to he bass line of Singin My Song. Just listen! It's freakin' amazing! The studio musicians were world class back in the day and no matter HOW corny you think David Cassidy and the whole PF show was, THAT MAN CAN SING! If you know music and appreciate, you'll hear me!
The CD quality is great. Pay no attention to that 2007 review. Buy it, play it, remember it, appreciate it and just have fun.
HIGHLY recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2007This was the very first LP that I purchased as a child - it's timeless! The couple of songs David Cassidy does not sing are still great, so don't let that put you off of buying this cd. This is as good as any other of the Partridge Family cd's, and a great addition to any Partridge Family music collection. Although if you were only to purchase one, I would get the "Up to Date" cd or the "Greatest Hits" cd for a wider range of the biggest hits. The Partridge Family were underrated and at times just cast off as another "bubblegum" group. Not so - David Cassidy along with great songwriters made them a timeless group.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021Great shape, fast delivery. Thank you so much.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2012"C'mon, get happy" went the cheerful lyrics to the theme song of the Partridge Family TV show and in the fall of 1970 that was an invitation America, going through a nervous breakdown over Cambodia, Kent State, and a midterm election that was one Nixon/Agnew speech away from descending into all-out civil war was unable to resist. The show was a hit, even though it was on ABC, the network of which it was famously said the only thing that ran longer than 13 weeks was the Viet Nam War. The Partridge Family was that true rarity in mass entertainment, the fun-for-everyone concept that actually delivered entertainment for all segments of the population. There were the little Partridge kids for the children, David Cassidy & Susan Dey for the teenyboppers, Shirley Jones for the grown-ups, & Danny Bonaduce's Danny for hip 10 year-olds of all ages. Small surprise that by December of that year "The Partridge Family Album" was fighting it out for space beneath the Christmas tree with George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" and the original "Jesus Christ Superstar" concept album.
Of course, the TV show was designed as a delivery system for a manufactured musical group designed to sell plasticware, following in the lucrative if critically-maligned footsteps of the Monkees. I guess the advantage the Partridge Family had was that with its spread-out age group there was little chance the members would get uppity and start demanding to write and perform their own music.
Is something like the Partridge Family a soul-killing exercise in cash-grabbing show business cynicism? Arguably. Evidence of a more gullible past that modern-day show business savvy sophisticates hunched over their laptops and smart phones can sneer at today? Perhaps. Then again, this is the day and age of "American Idol," "The Voice," and efforts to spin Broadway musicals, once the province of giants like Leonard Bernstein and Rodgers & Hammerstein, out of TV shows (yes, I'm talking about you, Smash). The musical industry term "hit factory" always had a literal truth to it. The only question was how good the product was that came out of the factory gates. At least shows like "Monkees" & "Partridge Family" went through the effort of creating new music, instead of just plowing through previously-created work like a harvester combine. Perhaps that is why we're listening to & discussing groups like "The Partridge Family" today. Any bets if people will be seeking out "Glee" albums in 2042?
In that spirit, "Partridge Family Album" stands up well today as an entertaining example of pop, 1970-style. Well-crafted tunes, recorded by top session players, offering up 2 or 3 minute installments of digestible teen-age angst and simple love songs with tuneful, catchy hooks, perfect to serve as the soundtrack for slumber parties & friendly get-togethers by the pool or in the parent's basement while they were watching "Laugh-In." There is just the right balance of upbeat numbers, ballads, and puppy-love songs that the entire thing does not blur together into one indecipherable aural blob. David Cassidy, who sings many of the leads, doesn't have a great voice, or a unique one, but he does possess a personable, friendly voice that sells the material by not over-emoting. The album includes an informative booklet on the story of how the whole project came together. Best numbers: "Point me in the Direction of Albuquerque," "Bandala," "Only a Moment Ago," "I Think I Love You."
Recommended for: Fans of the original series, people curious about pop-music cultural phenomenons of the period.
