Would you believe I've been looking for this for years? No, not this album per se, but that sound. Ever since I heard Miles Davis' Bitches Brew I looked to see where I could find that deep, dark, sensous, live sound again, but it was a bit difficult. Too many jazz-fusion albums where too rock orientated, even Miles Davis' albums to follow were the same way. Not that I didn't love what I heard, but I wanted something along the lines of Pharaoh's Dance and I wasn't finding it.

Well, finally I ran across Miles Davis alum Herbie Hancock, who I knew mostly from Rockit. The cover for this album immediately evoked the imagery for Bitches Brew, and the samples seemed to be in that same vein, so seeing it was on sale for so cheap I purchased it. Finally, I found that sound again. This thing grooves and undulates so wonderfully that I immediately became a fan of Hancock's and had to search out more from him immediately, which thankfully he did have more. Ugh, to think I thought of Hancock as a one-hit wonder for so long. That's the 80's for you.

    UPDATE:
For anyone who comes across this album and wants to here more of this sound, and already collected HH's Crossings and Mwandishi albums, then I have some good news. Essentially the same band (including HH) recorded two more albums, this time with trumpeter Eddie Henderson leading. These are Eddie Henderson's first two albums, Realization and Inside Out, and they're both cut from the same cloth as this album. Absolutely essential, so much so that they were compiled into a single CD release as Anthology 2 - The Capricorn Years. The bad news is that they're all out of print, so your best bet is getting it used, which is what I did.

Herbie disbanded his sextet shortly after this recording to form 'Headhunters". Though I'm a big fan of his funk quartet it's a shame that this line of thought wasn't continued. He himself said that there was nowhere else to go with this music and perhaps he's right. However, Sextant stands as a powerful milestone in the post "Bitch's Brew" world. Innovative in just about every respect; instrumentation, composition, use of synthesizers and incredible solos from Herbie and Eddie Henderson et al. Though this is unquestionably avant-garde the earthy (and unearthly) grooves makes it accessible to anyone with an open ear and mind. Though recorded in the early seventies this music is still fresh and futuristic. A wonderful artistic highpoint for Herbie Hancock in a career not lacking in creative highpoints. My highest recommendation!

I had Rain Dance on a tape from 1973 (used to make mix tapes from the radio) and never was sure it was Herbie Hancock. I love Herbie's earlier work. (Not a fan of Rockit.) It's my favorite Moog jazz song. Found my tapes after moving, and asked google. Found it! I'm 64, going through the rest of my unidentified music on cassette and reel to reel. Yikes!

This album is on the same vein as Miles Davis bitches brew, but I got to say that the melodies of this one caught my eye from the first listen, as its predecessor it has the same format, 3 songs, but on this one, the long one took the whole side A of the beloved vinyl format, pretty solid record, a real treat with headphones.

Vintage fusion from the early 70s. Excellent depth of recording. The MP3 of the album I downloaded sounds very good. I can't distinguish it from the CD I have of it. Very good compliment to Thrust. Herbie demonstrates that he learned from Miles' Bitches Brew sessions. However, Herbie from this period is much more funky and less rock-based than Miles was prior to his retirement in 1975.

I was just listening to this again this morning while having breakfast. The band and music is magical no matter if you're listening to it at low volume or blasting it, it will transport you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Auflegen hören genießen, Herbie und seine Mitstreiter in bestechender Form!!
