- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2024It’s been awhile. I have moved on and away from MMJ. That is not to take away from this recording. It is what brought me to them. Gr8 record.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2009A lot has happened in the time in between It Still Moves and 2005's Z. Two members left, replaced by guitarist Carl Broamel and keyboardist Bo Koster, the band became Bonnaroo legends, and started to pick up more attention and fame. So, when 2005's Z came around, it seemed fitting to try a few new things to the tried-and-true MMJ sound.
First off, there's less reverb, but that's ok, because the songs are fantastic. There's the Prince vibe of Wordless Chorus, the Flaming Lips-inspired It Beats 4 U, and the reggae-meets-Pink-Floyd Off The Record. The band really experiments with each song, channeling funk, reggae, psychedelia, and of course, rock and roll.
What makes this album really well done is the slick production. My Morning Jacket has never sounded this accessible and pop-friendly. Also, the album plays it a little safer. While It Still Moves was huge (74 minutes), this album manages to rock just the same at 45, correcting some of the weaknesses of albums like At Dawn and The Tennessee Fire.
And it's more energetic too. What A Wonderful Man and Anytime seems to take no prisoners in the pop and rock world. The band finally knows how to seriously rock out (not that they couldn't in the past), and Lay Low has a fantastic guitar duel that rivals early Skynyrd. Dondante also has a stellar guitar solo with a sax ending that rivals the best of Wish You Were Here.
This is a great album with absolutly no filler, and is full of surprises coming from a band that worshiped at the throne of Neil Young. Best album I've heard so far.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2021Album is obviously amazing if youre here getting a limited edition vinyl.
My only issue was the wrapping was damaged when I opened it. Slight indentation on the sleeve. I don’t know where it happened since the cardboard packing was top notch (2 separate boxes). Over it doesn’t take away from audio which is great.
In the end though it’s perfect. Didn’t want to drop a star for packaging when the music is great. That part shouldn’t reflect on My Morning Jacket, just need others to be aware.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2013I didn't really mean to review this, thought I was going just rate it to change my Amazon recommendations...but it did get me thinking about rating/reviewing music in general...it's so subjective and pretty dumb to try to quantify with stars or (especially) certain reviewers 100 point scales.
I will say that it is my opinion that Jim James is an amazing musician, artist and (probably) person in general and it is my opinion that this is MMJ's 2nd most accessible album (after Circuital). Wordless Chorus gets stuck in my head for days.
If you want to get into MMJ:
1) GO SEE THEM LIVE!
2) Buy Circuital
3) Buy Z
4) Etc
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2018I bought this after I saw the episode of American Dad where Stan hears them for the first time. This is very original. Very cool, psychedelic rock with a huge Flaming Lips influence. There's also some retro influences that fit right into the music. A little reggae in Off The Record. I'm very impressed and I think I will start to listen to more from these guys.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2011MY FIRST CD OF MMJ WAS EVIL URGES WHICH I REALLY ENJOYED. I SAW THEM ON AUSTIN CITY LIMITS AND REALLY LIKED THEM THEY REMIND ME A LOT OF BANDS FROM THE 60'S AND 70'S (IM 57) ESPECIALL ONE CALLED QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERICE. SO NOW IM PURCHASING CIRCUITAL AND Z, BUT I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT A FEW PEOPLE HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT BEING FROM SONY AND IT MESSING UP YOUR COMPUTER. I DONT GET IT COULD SOMEONE EXPLAIN. THEY WILL BE AT RED ROCKS HERE IN COLORADO IN AUGUST WISH I COULD GO. I HOPE MMJ KEEP IT REAL AND MUCH SUCCESS TO THEM
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2010My Morning Jacket's "Z" is a solid album! Each song has its own unique melody and energy. Still, they all connect harmoniously for a complete listening experience. The only thing is that I had to order it from overseas - so it took two weeks to get to me...but still, well worth it! I'd say that in different ways, I like it even more than MMJ's most recent "Evil Urges" - but both are fantastic! Songs definitely to hear: Wordless Chorus, It Beats 4 U, Off the Record, The Knot Comes Loose, and Dondante!

3.0 out of 5 stars Again bad quality control.
The media could not be loaded.
The review below holds and incredibly the replacement set is also warped. Unlike the first
set it plays so I cannot be bothered replacing it.
Coloured vinyl hummmmm????????
Artists and consumers must be driven mad by the lousy quality control on modern vinyl.
I know I am.
You know what it's like.
You wait for the new record.
You get really excited when it arrives.
You clean it and they all need cleaning!
Then the problem and then the disappointment. And there's too many of them with a problem for the poor attention to quality control being overlooked.
Have a look at the warp on this record.
You can see daylight!!
I have kept other warped records because they play but this one has such a kick in it that the needle jumps off and skates.
Completely unplayable.
Such a great record too.
So it's no stars for quality control but three stars overall for the great record and in appreciation of Amazon's service in replacing it.
Record companies please do better your artists and consumers deserve better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb album by My Morning Jacket - "Z" is one of the best ever!
I'd never heard of My Morning Jacket until I came across an entry for their 2005 album "Z" in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Curious, I checked out "Z" via YouTube and instantly felt the appeal of songs like "Wordless Chorus", "Knot Comes Loose" and "Dondante". After repeated listenings this music just sounds better and better. Not sure of the meaning of the disturbing lyrics in "Into the Woods", but aside from that this is a very listenable album, worthy of their place in RS magazine's list of the Greatest Albums of All Time. (Just ordered MMJ's 2015 release, "The Waterfall" and am looking forward to its musical delights.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Neo-Neo-Psychedelic Sound
My Morning Jacket liefern ihr bisher bestes Album hiermit ab.
Neo-Psychedelia trifft auf Alternative Rock.
Modern, aber mit Tradition und Pfiff.
Lassen SIe sich überraschen.
Anspieltipps: Gideon, Off the record
