Steve Carell rides the wave of 40-Year-Old Virgin stardom (and a biblical flood) in this bizarre, effects-heavy comedy about a modern-day Noah's ark. The film is nominally a sequel to Bruce Almighty, although it bears little relation to the 2003 Jim Carrey hit--except for the divine intervention of Morgan Freeman, who returns in his role as God. Even Carell's character is much altered from his supporting part in the first film; here, Evan Baxter says goodbye to the news-anchoring business in favor of his job as a naive freshman congressman. When God orders him to build an ark and prepare for an impending inundation, Evan sheepishly takes on the task (it's hard to turn down the job when your hair and beard grow to Old Testament lengths and God wants you to walk around in sackcloth).
Carell gets to do silly dances and mix it up with a variety of animals (real and computer-generated), all of which reminds us of the film's family-friendly tone and the PG rating. The kid stuff works just fine, although the religio-environmental message-mongering makes this a most curious kind of Hollywood blockbuster. When the flood comes, the film shifts into a mammoth-sized CGI extravaganza, recalling the era of overstuffed techno-comedies such as 1941 and Howard the Duck (and not to be nit-picky, but the tsunami-like disaster that overtakes Washington, D.C., looks as though it would snuff out the lives of quite a few citizens). Capable comic support comes from John Michael Higgins, Wanda Sykes, and Jonah Hill, with John Goodman and Lauren Graham filling out stock roles of fatcat politico and loyal wife, respectively. Carell is even better at being sincere than being funny, a talent that comes in handy here and bodes well for his future versatility. --Robert Horton

- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2025This is one of the BEST films ever made! If there only were more of these types of films, I truly believe that there wouldn't be so much crime in this world.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2024I really like this movie. It has great talent and Afton. A special effects are great and the animal training was surprising. I really enjoyed this movie very entertaining.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2014I love both BRUCE and EVAN in this ALMIGHTY series. Bruce Almighty is definitely the better movie, but I still give EVAN five stars.
I know that God has a sense of humor. Not only am I sure that he has enjoyed these movies, along with OH GOD and many other movies that let us see different views of the Almighty and of Heaven, I believe he may have provided some inspiration along the way.
Can you imagine what you would do if God gave you his powers for a day? What if you could hear everyone's prayers? What would you hear? Now, watch these two funny movies and see how close you came to the hilarity that ensued when all of this happened to two very funny people.
These two movies do come in a two-pack, but I decided to get the two single title editions (for just a few dollars more) so that I'd have the extra features (though I'm finally learning that I can frequently find the extra features on YouTube).
In both movies, supposedly average people get the chance to become God. It starts out fun, but they eventually realize they need to get serious, and learn more about themselves, and about God, in the process, realizing how hard of a job God really has, while still having fun along the way.
The humorous situations are out of this world, and I enjoy watching them again and again. Now that I own these DVD's, I plan to watch them at least every year. I love when they make a connection with old movies, like the promise that Jimmy Stewart made to Donna Reed in It's A Wonderful Life which Bruce fulfills in the first movie (I don't think this counts as a spoiler unless you are a lucky guesser).
I highly recommend both BRUCE and EVAN ALMIGHTY, but if you have never seen either movie, watch BRUCE ALMIGHTY first. It will help set you up for the second, EVAN, movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2025Cute movie. I was disappointed that it is based on the Bible and found it necessary to have a cuss word in it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2024Thank you for the quick delivery of your product. But the audio and visual quality is excellent. Because I have recently had surgery I needed to be able to add laughter in my life. It is good to know that I can depend on both the quality and the content of the product you have provided. Thank you again.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite comedy film
I've seen this film before and wanted it on DVD so I could watch whenever I wanted to - I think it's so funny. And Morgan Freeman makes a lovely 'God character' - he works so well with Steve Carell. I also happen to believe in the original version in the Holy Bible and I enjoy reading that one too, but for different reasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evan almighty

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best movies EVER!
With all the junk on tv these days this hilarious and brilliant story stands the test of time. Morgan Freeman and Steve Carrell are SO good in this. Kids love it too.
