From Electric Light Orchestra to Urge Overkill, some of rock's most memorable acts have trafficked in over-amplifications of genre to a level approaching the absurd. Whether Dimmu Borgir has the campy self-awareness of the latter or simply find themselves locked into their delirious conflation of black metal, vaguely industrial rock, and symphonic and operatic sounds with the fetishistic devotion of Jeff Lynne from ELO is anyone's guess. The last few years have brought more young listeners back to metal, what with all the supposedly "intelligent" and emo metal groups such as Pelican, Mastodon, and Early Man. It's still quite a leap from that to a Norwegian band who prints their lyrics backwards so that they have to be read in the mirror and craft ridiculously dark concept albums about the evils of the Christian church, and how Satanism is so much better. There's no irony here. But there is bombast in just about every conceivable manifestation, delivered beautifully. From the soaring, operatic vocals and live string accompaniment to the beyond-fast riffing and drumming, In Sorte Diaboli is the perfect music to annoy parents and satisfy fans of overindulgence everywhere. --Mike McGonigal

- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2007I am a huge fan of Dimmu Borgir, have been listening to them for years and love all their albums except the first. My fav albums have to be Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Spiritual Black Dimensions. Having said that, I think their last two albums have achieved a level of difficulty one can only enjoy after listening to the album for months.
There are so many layers to this album, at first it put me off but now I think it's brilliant. The DVD extras were really awesome, there's even more on Youtube, as the European release had even more "Making Of" footage.
I notice a lot of fans said this sounds like Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia mixed with Death Cult Armageddon, but perhaps that is what they are currently defining their sound as. BTW I think the US bonus track for this album is a beautiful song, the vocals are amazing. Can't wait to see what they come up with next!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2007With the crisp symphonic sound of the Puritanical album combined with the power and mighty orchestral sound of Dimmu Borgir's Death Cult album, In Sorte Diaboli is definately NOT an album that dissapoints. With the melodic structure of an orchestra, they tie black metal's most brutal sounds of fast drumming, deep and clean vocals, and guitars that will blow your ears out together with such complexity that only the lyrics can match. In Sorte Diaboli is by far one of their greatest achievements to date, and is surely an epic album in the entire genre of black metal, keeping true to the "satanic, anti-christian, and anti-religion," lyrical themes that black metal, for the most part, is based on. Do NOT pass up this album.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2023there were quite a few videos for this album, which on the whole are great. but for some reason the album versions are not the same which diminishes how much i enjoy them. i'm waiting for things like "you can never corrupt me again" at the very end of the track and it doesn't happen. not exactly false advertising but be aware. this also is the last great Dimmu album IMHO, and it's a great one to go out on.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2017Such an amazing album from a brutally awesome band. This is one of my goto albums for whenever, bad day, crank it up, best day ever, why not summon a demon and celebrate. This album is on point lyrically and musically, Shagrath's vocals are amazing and along with the amazing guitar play from Galder and Silenoz, this is by far one of thier best albums.
Give it a listen, drive the neighbors crazy and shake the foundations of hell with this awesome band.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2020This record sounds amazing! Don't hesitate, get your hands on this!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2015Fan of the band, and this album is my favorite so far. Dark brooding melodies, skull crushing drums, insane vocals just add to the miasma that is Dimmu Borgir!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2012This cd was a christmas gift for my son's girlfriend. She said that it would be hard to find, but I found it on Amazon.com. The entire purchase from start to finish was easy and she was thrilled on xmas day!

5.0 out of 5 stars The last truly good album of Dimmu Borgir, still a classic!
In my opinion In Sorte Diaboli was the last good album Dimmu Borgir brought out. Since then it went downhill with Abrahadabra and Eonian, who are both a lot less qualitative and in the true Dimmu style.
Even if I think the band went downhill after this album, In Sorte Diaboli is still a very good album that the Dimmu or Black metal fan must have in it's collection. Recommended!

Más que contenta por haberlo adquirido, es la edición especial limitada, que trae un dvd y the heretic hammer como canción extra que no trae la versión normal. Obviamente me llegó en excelentes condiciones y súper rápido.
