Before using

Make certain that the pond has vigorous aeration, i.e. a fountain or aeration device to avoid fish loss due to low oxygen levels. When algae is controlled and removed by the filter or settles to the bottom of the pond, the oxygen level may drop to harmful levels if adequate aeration is not provided. In warm weather, pond water carries much less oxygen.

  • Will not harm fish, plants, surrounding wildlife and pets when used as directed
  • Do not use with freshwater crustaceans, including shrimp, crabs, and lobsters

API POND ALGAEFIX Algae Control

Why use API POND ALGAEFIX Algae Control?

Algae growth can appear as “green water” blooms, "pea-green soup", filamentous algae on plants, or floating mats (blanket weed). Algae grows when there is an excessive amount of nutrients in the water, usually in spring prior to plant growth, and in the summer in direct sun.

API POND ALGAEFIX Algae Control works fast to control algae growth and keep ponds, water gardens and fountains clean and clear.

pond calculator size volume dosing algaecide algae
CALCULATE THE VOLUME OF YOUR POND BEFORE USING

To ensure accurate dosing, determine pond volume before use. You can use the following:

  • • For Square and Rectangular Ponds: Avg. length (feet) x Avg. width (feet) x Avg Depth (feet) = cubic feet of water. Cubic feet of water x 7.5 = number of gallons
  • Example: A pond with a length of 8 feet, width of 6 feet and an average depth of 2 feet has approx. 720 U.S. Gallons.
  • • For Round Ponds: Top Diameter x Bottom Diameter x Height x 0.785 x 7.5
  • Example: 3’TD x 3’ BD x 2' H x 0.785 x 7.5 = 106 U.S. Gallons.

How to dose API POND ALGAEFIX Algae Control

Do not overdose!

Add 1 teaspoon (5ml) for each 50 U.S. gallons (190 L) or a ¼ cup (60 ml) for each 600 gallons (2,275 L). We calculated some possible dosing examples for you in the aside chart.

  • Repeat dose every 3 days until algae is controlled
  • Once algae growth is under control, add one dose per week. Weekly doses will control algae growth.

When algae is controlled and removed by the filter or settles to the bottom of the pond, the oxygen level may drop to harmful levels if adequate aeration is not provided. In warm weather, pond water carries much less oxygen. Therefore, when using during warm weather and high water temperatures, vigorous, 24 hour aeration is required for the duration of the treatment. Do not shut off pond pumps and aeration devices at night. To ensure accurate dosing, determine pond volume before use. Do not overdose. Add 1 teaspoon (5ml) for each 50 U.S. gallons (190 L), ¼ cup (60 ml) for each 600 gallons (2,275 L) of pond water or fountain water. Thoroughly mix into pond water by adding near the pump outflow, waterfall, or aeration device. It can be mixed in a bucket of pond water and dispersed evenly around the pond. Repeat dose every 3 days until algae is controlled. Be prepared to siphon out dead algae. Once algae growth is under control, add one dose per week. Weekly doses will control algae growth and reduce pond maintenance. Caution: do not use with freshwater crustaceans, including shrimp, crabs, and lobsters. Precautionary statement: hazards to humans and domestic animals. Harmful if swallowed or absorbed through skin. Causes moderate eye irritation. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling and before eating, drinking, chewing gum, using tobacco or using the toilet. If swallowed, call a Poison Control Center, or doctor immediately for treatment advice. If on skin, take off contaminated clothing and rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15-20 minutes. This DOES remove ALGEA without affecting the wildlife - I'm very impressed.
5 out of 5 stars
This DOES remove ALGEA without affecting the wildlife - I'm very impressed.
This stuff is fantastic. I have a 7,000 gallon koi pond with 22 koi ranging from 12" to 30" in length. Average is 20". I'm a heavy feeder, I also feed twice per day. The pond is in full sunlight and circulates 8,000 gallons per hour via a 100' long 3' wide river with a 3' wide waterfall. What does all that mean. It means the water get's plenty of oxygen and sunlight and therefore grows green algae by the ton! The normal water color for the past 7 years has been pea green! I have lots of filtration, a huge UV filter and I've used hundreds of dollars of good bacteria. NOTHING kept the algae out for the past 7 years. ----> this year I decided to try a chemical to clear the water or get rid of the pond. I read everything I could find and decided this was the best chemical “experiment”: " poly oxyethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene dichloride ". This chemical is packaged under several different names and a concentrated version can be purchased at swimming pool suppliers. (concentrated is 20%, much thicker, more like syrup) The chemical kills algae AND causes it to clump and float to the surface as foam. It will clog your pond filter in a blink because of the clumped foam dead algae. Be prepared to clean the filter often. The chemical is "consumed" as it kills algae and my water was so green I added 7 times the dosage over a period of 3 weeks. The color tuned from pea green to a gray green slowly. I had to clean the filter every couple of days for about a month. ===>>> the water is now crystal clear. I now add about 3 ounces every 2 weeks and the water stays crystal clear. Every time I add there's a little foam on the surface, the filter clogs up within 48 hours, I clean it about 60%, not 100%, and I'm good for another 2 weeks. I'm very pleased with the results,===>> How did the fish and plants do? It never phased them one bit. Not one bit. They didn't come up gulping for oxygen, it didn't faze any of the many frogs or billions of snails that inhabit the river, NONE of the lilies or water lettuce or other plants were affected in any way. I don’t have any experience with other fish other than koi. This is the chemical, sold under several different names: " poly oxyethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene dichloride " The dosage will vary by vendor depending on the concentration. The 3oz per 7000 gallons every two weeks I use is a 20% concentration I purchased at a swimming pool supply store sold under a different brand name. I have tried three different brands of this chemical (including this one) and they all work exactly the same. The only difference is the dosage which varies based on the concentration, ranging from 4% to 20%.Attached, 2 pictures, before and 45 days later, after.

I love this product! The algae in our ponds was out of control but this product worked wonders on it. The ponds are now nice and clear and I only need to add the Algaefix once a week. We didn't lose any fish, they didn't seem to be affected by it at all, but we have fountains and air stones in all three of our ponds. I highly recommend this Algaefix, just make sure you have good aeration in your pond or ponds. The only complaint I have is that it was hard on the hornwort, killing and damaging a lot of it but I'm guessing that's because it was covered in algae. I removed most of it because it didn't look nice but hornwort grows fast so it'll recover. It didn't harm any other water plants.

I have a small backyard plastic pond where the recirculating water falls into a small concrete bird bath which overflows back into the pond water. In hot sunny weather the water turned green and developed floating patches of algae before I started using this product on a weekly basis in June. Now the water stays relatively clear, as seen in the video, and the residue from the algae is confined to the rocks and filter screen at the bottom. Birds frequently splash around in the small birdbath so it is a bird friendly product. I maintain a natural looking area around the pond so I don't bother trying to clean the residue off the bottom of the pond until I pull out the pump and filter in the late fall. I don't have fish in it so I can't comment on oxygen levels in the water. I will mention that the directions emphasize the need to maintain good water circulation so the pump runs continuously. Five stars because it works very well in my little pond.

I'm torn when it comes to this product. I started using Algaefix last year, and the results were truly incredible. Overnight (quite literally) my pond went from a soupy, stringy mess to see-to-the-bottom clear. So of course, I bought more of this for the 2015 season.

After my first application this year, I'm wondering if they switched to a new formulation. Here's why: Our pond had a pretty heavy algae bloom this spring. The water was green and like last year, I had a lot of string algae and floating algae. I dosed the pond with the same amount of Algaefix that I used last year and like before, the water cleared up significantly overnight. However, this time around, my fish were VERY negatively affected. I have a few small koi and a few goldfish in my pond and when I checked on them the morning after treating, they were all hanging listlessly at the surface or on the floor of the pond. Those at the top weren't gasping, just hanging there. They were so sluggish that I was actually able to reach in and pick one up with the fish putting up almost no struggle! I thought for sure they would die.

I have a waterfall, a spitter, and two aerators in my pond, so this was clearly not a result of having too little oxygen (something the directions warn of for this product).

About three days after treating, the fish are now moving around again. I'm torn as to what to do and how to rate this product. On one hand, it does work, and it works very well. However, I'm concerned that continued use may stress or even kill my fish.

If you have fish or other aquatic animals, you might consider trying something else first. If you're fighting a really bad algae infestation or don't have aquatic animals, though, this is admittedly a good product for removing algae quickly and efficiently.

I could not believe it. It makes the water look great, there is no smell in the water. It did kill one or two of the weaker fish, but that was expected. So if you have expensive fish in your pond, you might want to take them out before treating your water. It has been over two weeks now and the water is still clear. I highly recommend this product 👌.

Amazing results on just two days. Two months of algae bloom due continuous rain and sunny weather. Never experienced this in with my pond before. Fishes could no longer be seen.

    Fantastic API Algaefix ...

My pond is restored to be crystal clear again.
