The love life of a woolly mammoth--handled with G-rated delicacy--drives this sequel to the first computer-animated romp in the age of prehistoric mammals. While the first Ice Age took a delightful premise and suffocated it with a formulaic plot--in which a mammoth named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano, Everyone Loves Raymond), a sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo, Moulin Rouge!), and a sabre-tooth tiger named Diego (Denis Leary, Rescue Me) helped an abandoned human infant return to its tribe (basically, Three Mammals and a Baby)--the sequel takes the now-familiar setting, gives it a shapeless, episodic storyline, and yet somehow becomes pretty darn entertaining. Faced with the threat of a flood from melting ice, our heroic trio are on the run to escape from their blossoming valley. On the way, they meet a female mammoth (Queen Latifah, Bringing Down the House) who thinks she's an opossum and get menaced by some freshly defrosted carnivo! rous fish. Add into the mix a herd of lava-worshipping mini-sloths, some Busby Berkeley-style vultures, and more ingenious slapstick featuring the acorn-crazed Scrat, and Ice Age: The Meltdown will amuse even jaded adults. -- Bret Fetzer

If your kids have any interest in learning about how animation works, skip the mediocre games and pointless featurettes like Meet Crash & Eddie (which function like commercials for the dvd you've already bought) and dig into the fascinating The Animation Director's Chair and Scrat's Piranha Smackdown. Director's Chair shows a handful of scenes from the movie at different stages of design and polish, while Smackdown repeats the same scene but with wildly different sound effects. There are also two informative commentary tracks--an earnest but dry one from director Carlos Saldanha and a jovial one from several members of the animation crew--but for the general viewer, the gems will be some new scenes featuring the rambunctious opossum brothers and a new short cartoon, No Time for Nuts, in which Scrat scurries through time to find precious acorns. While every bit as gorgeously animated as Ice Age: The Meltdown, this delightful short captures the zippy, elastic flavor of classic Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck cartoons. --Bret Fetzer

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2024The Ice Age series are one of the few in movies that I find each sequel to be as good as the original. Whenever we need a good laugh we watch Ice Age movies. Safe for kids to watch as well. There was one cuss word and (as usual) did not have to be there. But that is the way of entertainment these days, I guess (doesn't mean I have to like it). The storyline is great and deals with some issues common to us all that can be used as discussion points.
Recommend highly!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2024I like the ICEAGE movie 🎥🍿 saga I'd prefer to watch them in order not out of order it's great entertainment
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2013I never took much interest in the Ice Age movies, until they were given to my young boys, who became hooked, and they played quite a bit. Inevitably, I ended up watching them all as well, and really enjoyed the characters in the movie and how they interact with each other. This one, I believe, is the second of four Ice Age films, the one where Manny, who believes he is the last mammoth on earth, actually finds another mammoth, "Ellie." The plot is fast-moving and entertaining. The sub-plot of the prehistoric squirrel who can never quite hold onto his acorn, is continued and adds another level of entertainment to the movie. The voice talents of all the characters are fantastic, paired with great characterization by the animators. These movies are well done, and what is even more unusual, the sequels are better than each movie before, in my opinion, because the characters become more developed. Ice Age 2 is better than Ice Age 1, but Ice Age 3 is better than 2, and I think Ice Age 4 is just as good, or may even top Ice Age 3.
This is good, clean family entertainment, if you overlook the few short instances of gross body humor (I hate it, but little boys laugh--what can you do), and the slight sexual references (one or two in each movie). Why can't they just leave these out? I would give it a five, but hate that they have to throw in that stuff and ruin a perfectly good family film that would be just as entertaining without the body noises and references to sex or sexual organs. But don't get me started. Overall, love the Ice Age movies and appreciate the talent that went into making them.
My kids love the music, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2006Ice Age and Ice Age 2: The Meltdown are 20th Century Fox's CGI successes. Both movies warm the heart; they make you appreciate the value of friends and family; they teach good morals. They are class-A family films (with the all important adult-asides).
There has been a tremendous proliferation of computer generated image films over the past couple of years which has certainly diluted the excitement that used to surround these movies. 2006 has got to set the record with 13...count 'em...13 releases that I can think of (Cars, The Wild, Happy Feet, Doogal, Open Season, The Ant Bully, Monster House, Chicken Little, Barnyard, Over the Hedge, Hoodwinked, Ice Age 2 & Flushed Away).
But the overkill of computer animation in 2006 should not sway anyone into missing Ice Age 2; it is the best of all 13 in 2006 by far. And if you've not seen the original, it's not important to do so, but it sure does enhance the experience.
The picture is just awesome; this computer generated animation is amazing to see on a high-def TV. It's almost 3D. Unbelievable.
The Ice Age movies are classics and should not be missed by anyone, infant right up to senior movie-goer.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2024It’s a good addition to my dvd collection of Ice Age!

5.0 out of 5 stars Zum Dahinschmelzen

5.0 out of 5 stars Einfach tierisch
