- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2018This story might of been written years ago, but it sure covers what we all have to face at one time or another, which is dealing with an elder in the family. I take care of my mother-in-law who is in her early eighties and she used to drive me up the wall. I used to think to myself, "Why does it have to be so difficult? Why is she making things so complicated? How can we make it work?" After watching this movie, it helped me relate to her more and helped me understand where she was coming from. I've learned to become more patient with her, work things out and love her for who she is. I felt that this movie portrayed a lot of my life story and it helped me understand her more and connect with her by seeing things through her eyes. Sometimes a good movie like this is all we need to help us understand what we all go through when we reach the elder stage of life.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2014Olympia Dukakis and Lyndsay Wagner play a mother and daughter who are forced to deal with the hardships of life in terms of elder care. Olympia, a recent widow, must learn to release some of her freedom and the life she led to allow Lyndsay to help her through the rest of her years.
This is not a doom and gloom movie or one where force is used. Through understanding and compassion, the relationship between mother and daughter deepens. The ending is bitter sweet as Olympia learns to say goodbye to her past and move on to her future with a positive attitude. (I was teary eyed.)
Both Olympia and Lyndsay portray their characters excellently and believably. This movie can be watched by teens as well as adults.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2014I have to say that I enjoyed this movie and Lindsay's performance was superb, much more believable acting than many of her other works which to me seemed forced. Here, she is very real in her emotions. Olympia, as always is a wonderful actress. The writing isn't up to the task of these two fine actresses. But I'll give it a pass because their performances and the message is much more important.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2012Adult children encounter difficult decisions when it's apparent their parent(s) are unable to care for themselves in a healthy way. This movie gives great insight and symptoms to watch out for and how to handle/how not to handle circumstances. It's a compassionate, well acted, true to life topic that we need to address more in this American society where dark entertainment has become more the norm.
Both actresses were fantastic, as always.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2020A wonderfully produced story -realistic. Adult children and aging parents interconnection needs.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2011I am a huge fan of Lindsay Wagner, and I think Olympia Dukakis is a fantastic actress. They both did a great job in FIRE IN THE DARK--especially Ms. Dukakis. If I didn't know better, I would have thought the actress had gone to the Great Theatre in the Sky the minute the director yelled, "Cut! That's a wrap." The only reason I didn't give this movie 4 stars is because it feels dated. Compared to the movies of today, it is paced a little slowly. Even so, I sympathized with both characters. I felt their every frustration and their every fear. I even shed a few tears. If you are a fan of either of these actresses, or if you know someone going through the trials and tribulations of growing old and frail, it is worth adding to your collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2014It was good. With this disease. You know that we are not the only one who are taking care of our Parents. It was to the point.
To try to understand how sick they are and you really can't do much for them accept be t heir.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2011This movie was a good one. However, it was a little depressing to me..or rather sad. It was shipped to me in good condition, in a timely manner and I would recommend this seller again. This is the second time I have reviewed this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story
Fire in the Dark kept me expecting a fire; the last lines in the movie reveals the meaning of the title... I like Lindsey Wagner and Olivia Dukakis, so I purchased this DVD. Wonderful story of aging, and how elders lives are not over until its over; and how difficult it is for children to become care givers to our parents. I really felt compassion and understanding for the characters, as I experienced similarities with my parents. Very good movie, I recommend this DVD and story, it will help families prepare for inevitable aging; we must allow elders to choose what is right for them, when they have the capacity to make decision that will help them live out their years with dignity... Often not possible with certain illnesses, when family need to do what is best for their elders... Life is about choices and consequences. This movie is a keeper for me.
