Under the Special Features section of the DVD, the voice over says "From the producer of Bullitt and The French Connection comes The Seven Ups. " You'd better believe it. This movie is fast paced and totally unpredictable. You have to watch this movie uninterrupted. If you don't you'll miss important developments that will leave you clueless. The movie is filmed in Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey and the Bronx. The setting of the film is as the cities looked at the time; dirty, drab, grey, polluted and dingy. Roy Scheider is the most intense actor I've seen besides Gene Hackman and Jack Lemmon. The overall feel of The Seven Ups is an exercise in deja vu as there are similarities in filming style and score (music) from the other two movies mentioned earlier. The car chase is something you gotta see to believe. How the filmmakers got permission to drive that recklessly and fast in a crowded city is beyond me. If you're a fan of cars getting severely damaged and still drivable with no computer generated imagery, watch this. Movies like this will never be made again.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2017There is something powerful about the movies made on location in NYC during the 1970's. The dirt and despair are front and center, the gritty locations are key. Movies like Seven Ups, French Connection, Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, Dog day Afternoon are classics because they are not overstated and over top like most movies are today. If you want to experience, and I do mean experience what those times were like see this movie. The locations are perfect, the actors true life depictions of the good guys & bad guys. No frills here, mafia figures are not dressed in $1,000 suits, cops working in deplorable conditions, a stoolie who cons a cop, and a car chase to die for. The smallest details are not over looked, there is a real life poster in the 7Ups squad room for two NYPD officers who were killed at that time. I know people from the area will laugh at the confusing choice of locations for the car chase but this is a movie that actually stars one of the greatest stuntman ever, Bill Hickman. When I first saw this I was living in the Bronx and enjoyed seeing these locations in a movie. Today, I look back at the character of those areas, especially Arthur Ave and miss it. Finally the score is a perfect match for the movie, sparse, strong and attention getting. Great work all around, this is one of the most underrated. movies of all times.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2024An all round action packed movie…great suspense and the one car scene is absolutely riveting. All of the actors are ready made for the roles they have taken on. This movie falls into the group of Serpico, and The French Connection. A movie that is very enjoyable and is never dull.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2015I've probably watched this movie 10 times and I think I've finally figured out what happens. Like a lot of 70s crime movies the story is often ambiguous, dialogue is sparse, and explanations are just omitted. I remembered it for the insane car chase, the savage demise of a young Ken Kercheval as a cop wearing a wire (even in today's crime genre, still a death sentence). It was my introduction to an intense actor by the name of Roy Scheider - who comes across like a younger version of George C. Scott. Mob veteran Tony Lo Bianco as his friend, the terminally hideous Richard Lynch as the almost unnamed bad guy "Moon" and his driver - played by the immortal Bill Hickman who also does the stunt driving. No pyrotechnics, no CGI - just fast, fast driving in off-the-shelf Pontiac barges of the 1970s. Nobody does car chases like this anymore (Bullitt, French Connection) and likely no one ever will. Too dangerous, and action scenes are now cut-cut-cut-cut-cut to give you a headache and disguise the fact that nothing is happening. Watch it for the car chase and then watch it twice more to understand what's really going on and who's who. The final scene is classic 70s - back when they made movies without happy endings. Be forewarned. And when Lynch blasts open that trunk with his shotgun, fasten your seatbelts. And look out for that truck!

5.0 out of 5 stars GRITTY 70'S COP MOVIE
Roy Scheider plays Buddy, a cop in an elite squad called 'The Seven-Ups, so called because, when convicted, the criminals get jail sentences of seven years and up. When his partner is murdered, it's up to him to bring the killers to justice.
This is a gritty cop movie from the 70's. If you like the French Connection (which Roy Scheider was also in) and Serpico, you should enjoy this. Filmed in New York, but not in the tourist spots you normally see. It is shot against one of New York's winters. The cinematography paints a bleak cold picture of the city in winter, which compliments the grittiness of the story. No digital effects here, everything you see is for real. The grain structure has been left intact, but is not obtrusive, and only occasionally is heavy. All in all it does not spoil the enjoyment of the film. If you thought the car chase in Bullitt was good, then wait till you watch this one. There are also a load of extras, one being the super 8 release from the 70's which a certain age group will remember, where condensed versions of a film were released and sold, (and would have cost a lot more money than this Blu Ray). The print used for this transfer is clean, and has no visible scratches or splices. This review is for Signal One's release of their Blu Ray, and does not refer to any other releases.
Picture Quality is good, with a sharp image. Colours are natural, and has a bleakness that only winter can bring out. This Blu Ray transfer is in the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (although neither Amazon or Blu ray.com gives you this information). The sound is in the original mono.
Final word: If a small company like Signal One can release a film with all these extras at an affordable price, why can't the majors?
Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sorpresa muy agradable. Súper recomendable.
Un sorpresa agradable, no es French Connection ni Bullit, pero el film funciona. La edición más bien sencilla, pero el precio bien merece la compra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spitzenfilm
Eine wirklich gute Geschichte. Erstklassige Schauspieler. "Geile" Autos. Der Film reicht an French Connection heran. Jetzt bitte noch Tödliche Umarmung auf DVD veröffentlichen, und ich habe alle guten Roy-Scheider-Filme auf Silberlingen.
