- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2018Ever since I was a kid I would have liked to have followed the movie - "David and Bathsheba" around just to see it again. I actually watched the movie twice when it came to our downtown theater in Glenrock, Wyoming, then walked home at night alone, thinking of it.
At that time obtaining and owning any movie was not possible. Then came the time when movies were offered on plastic discs as large as long play phonograph records and a player was available for purchase also. I had married and my wife and I had 3 children who enjoyed watching the limited movies on the machine we bought, but many movies were just not available. Then came movies that people could buy that were copied on tapes from a master source and a movie tape playing machine was offered for sale. We bought one and began adding a library of movies. People we knew and who were related to us did the same thing.
Finally, it seems, came the machine that could play a new type of disc called the DVD. Taped movies became a thing of the past for many people, who chose the small DVD plastic discs and beheld a much larger choice of movies that could be bought and owned....watched anytime.
Our library of movies on tape all but ceased as we were able to obtain movies that didn't require a 'running back to the start' in order to view the tapes again. The new movies could be taken out of the machine and instantly watched again, and again, and again.
As Biblical movies were transformed to the DVD discs our number of them grew to a large number. But I did not see the movie I was looking for until just a week ago, online. I bought a copy and really enjoy watching it, above many other good movies such as 'The Robe' - 'The Ten Commandments' - and 'The greatest story ever told'. 'David and Bathsheba' is still my favorite one. It only took the week for us to have it
.
I highly recommend " David and Bathsheba"

By 20th Century Fox
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2009In August 1951, Twentieth Century Fox released David and Bathsheba--a bold, colorful depiction of the fateful love affair between a chosen king and the woman who would bear his successor. Adultery, intrigue, murder and divine judgment play their roles in this biblically based saga.
Alfred Newman's musical score is that type of grand orchestration which touches the soul. Without music, there is no inspiration.
Phillip Dune's script gave the movie audiences a fine portrayal of a an aging king who allowed his obsession and passion for a beautiful woman, who was married to one of his bravest and truest warriors, to bring disgrace on his name and divine wrath on Israel. Like his later scripts (The Robe, The Agony and the Ecstasy...), Dune's focus was on the characters and what made them, what drove them, and what were their inner conflicts. Their moments of joy and moments of sadness, and eventually, their decisions and the effect of those decisions on themselves and those around them were explored in full circle.
Raymond Massey's Nathan is a wilderness prophet in the true tradition of Old Testament prophets. He gave the word of the Lord unequivocally without fear of the consequences.
Gregory Peck, with his impeccable voice, and Susan Hayward, with her graceful beauty, gave life to David and Bathsheba on the screen. From the first moment of their encounter in his chamber to the last scene in his chamber, the story unfolds from forbidden love to forgiveness. As the rains pour from the heavens to refresh the earth, they refresh David's soul and rekindle the spark of what made him-a man after God's own heart.
"In war time the best are always the first to die." David's words to Uriah were fortuitous.
David had Joab sacrifice Uriah in order to cover his own sins against his God and his fellow man. Uriah would have died for David without hesitation. However, to take Uriah's life in order to have his wife was a crime which David the shepherd boy would never had done. However, the king whom David had become had no hesitation in making it happen.
The theme in this film is that David the king rediscovers David the shepherd boy and his faith in God. The quality of this DVD is outstanding.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2020This is a great movie! The picture & script are fabulous. The SDH subtitles are superb. This movie was made about 69 years ago, so it has superb special effects(no cheating with computer graphics), & none of today's biases.
This copy arrived well-packaged with no scratches or scuffs. It was quite enjoyable, but I couldn't decide to rate it a 4 or a 5. There are epics like The Ten Commandments, Ben Hur, The Bible, The Alamo, Hatari, Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, Becket, etc. that are a 5 on a grand scale. Cannot rate this any lower than a four, no matter what.
There's a special feature about making the movie which is very interesting, but only touches the surface. Kind of disappointing, but it's still quite interesting, & could, quite probably, be all that's available. It's not a dvd flaw.
This movie seems to be fairly accurate. I highly recommend it.
Something I learned from my old recording from AMC, when they used to be like TCM, & not covered in this dvd's special features; Gregory Peck is actually playing the harp in the scene where he's reciting a song to Susan Hayward. As I remember, he took lessons somewhere to be able to play this scene AND play the harp in it.
