The 2002 documentary film "Witness to Hope," presented on this bare-bones DVD with only "play" and chapter stop features, is a remarkable accomplishment. Like George Weigel's source biography of the same name, it manages to be remarkably insightful about Karol Wojtyla's papacy, neither pulling its punches about acknowledging controversy nor simplistically idolizing him. Although produced by Catholics about a man who Pope Francis has now canonized as St. John Paul II, it interviews a wide variety of people from Polish political figures to Jimmy Carter's Polish-born national security advisor.

Most surprising of all, the interviews are uniformly in English, with even the Polish interviewees speaking it flawlessly! The historical dramatizations are also tastefully done, visualizing key moments without overwhelming the film, and balancing the interview footage remarkably well. The film avoids the extremes of being overly talky in its interviews and overly hokey/melodramatic in its dramatizations. Weigel's incisive analysis lurks behind every frame, even though he appears himself in the interview footage only rarely, which is another sign of the video's quality in that it focuses squarely on JPII and not on his official American biographer.

The film does a particularly nice job of tracing the early life of Karol Wojtyla including the death of his mom when he was 9, the death of his older brother when he was 12, the Nazi occupation of Poland, the Nazi deportation of his university professors, his efforts in the Polish underground, his choice to enter an underground seminary, and his father's death when he was 19. As the film traces his career, it emphasizes his intellect (professor of social ethics) and political saavy in dealing with the post-war communist government, making him ideally suited to become the pope who launched Solidarity and brought down Communism in Europe without firing a shot. It then alludes to his criticism of unbridled capitalism and secularism, which became the theme of his later years as pope. Despite billing Pope John Paul II as a "mystic" and intellectual artist, the film overwhelmingly views him in the light of secular admiration for his political genius, and is all the more effective for it.

The only downside to the film, and it's really minor, is that it feels slightly dated today. Filmed three years before JPII's death, it fails to provide any sort of retrospective or overall perspective of his papacy, and it does not include anything from his moving death and funeral. But in terms of professional artistry and coverage of the late pope's childhood, it's head and shoulders above every other documentary on the market.

I also like the DVD called "Credo," a musical tribute by Andrea Bocelli that features his voice singing arias over footage of JPII's life, death and funeral. It's very moving in an emotional way. The more recent film "Testimony" hosted by Michael York is my favorite video on JPII from his life to death, but limits itself to the perspective of the late pope's personal secretary, being based on his memoirs. Most of the network TV documentaries are disposable. Even today, "Witness to Hope" remains among the best video documentaries of John Paul II, despite not covering his later years and death.

From childhood to manhood, from priest to pope, this movie covers Pope John Paul's life. He was destined for great things. This movie covers his childhood, the loss of his mother, then how he and his father went on. His school years, his love of acting, sports and his leadership qualities. The war came and he, like everyone at that time, survived the best he could. The loss of his father, then his days as priest. His life as pope. You will live each moment with him. I laughed, cried and was awed and grateful for this holy man. I highly recommend this movie to anyone. He is now been declared a saint. Watch this with friends and family, it's an experience you won't soon forget.

Late have I loved him. Blessed John Paul II was a great man. He taught three things, Hope, Love and Be not afraid. Learning more about him in this past year has been life changing for me. For those who are looking for that extra help to have a better spiritual life, this video will certainly give you inspiration. Also, the mini-series, KAROL- I. A Man Who Became Pope, II. The Pope, The Man, is a wonderful behind the scenes movie about his life. I purchased mine here on Amazon. (plug, plug) It's a two DVD set.

This is a great movie about Pope John Paul II. It has all the ingredients of a great biography, but it's much more. It shows what forged the Pope's views, and his character. It helps us understand how a saint is born. How a man can witness so many suffering and injustice, and still come out wanting to spread peace and a way for a holy life.

It shows what forges a man, his convictions, and strength of character to never bow down to trends or easy ways.

A great movie about a great saint.

The video uses archival footage and photos along with the more recent photographic updates to perfection. In places where re-enactments were necessary they were done so well with attention to detail in every respect that the viewer was not distracted by "actors acting." The entire production seamlessly flowed; one could gain insight into the life of this great man and how his early years formed him and how the later years drew upon the character which had been forged in those difficult times. This is an important video for anyone interested in the life of Pope John Paul II.

I bought this tape after researching to find that it was based on documentary evidence and not Hollywood fiction. I saw chapter 1 of The Man Who Would Be Pope and although it was highly entertaining my research found that the film had many undocumented elements. I wanted to know the truth about this man as much as possible, and this Witness to Hope seems to be done in documentary style, and not a Hollywood version.

Wonderful movie/documentary about the life of Pope John Paul II. There are many more out there about Pope John Paul II so it is hard to judge. This one has some great real vintage videos of him and what was going on when he was a youth, etc. If you want a movie with someone else playing the role of Pope Jon Paul II I would recommend Karol. Both are well worth watching.

The great, true biography of the great man. As his fellow polish, I watched the movie and felt as I was back home. I was 8 years old when Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope and he was the Greatest Pole I have ever known. The movie shows the terror of nazi war and the communism - the real times of my parents and grandparents. John Paul II thru his love to God and to all human race, tried to build better world - against the all odds and great critisism.

I will always miss him. Rest in peace Lolek!

He was a very special Pope no doubt and so different to all the others. Pope John Paul's reign will always be remembered.
I am personally not religious. I live in a world of belief in Science but all the same you could not help being affected by this very good man whose life has been well documented.
I have many DVDS about him and about his youth.
He is a Saint and i believe he was the real deal.
The fact he was Polish was incredible and perhaps his outlook on life was coloured by WW2.
He was very much like JESUS. He was very kind and cared about others. He made the time to visit many other Countries and touched many even non believers BUT he also upset some with some of his rheteric so they took a pop shot at him bringing Popes into bullet proof cars. He even forgave his attacker.
    HE WAS SPECIAL.

It was OK, but I enjoyed "Karol, A man who became Pope" a lot better as it was more personal. However, "Witness to Hope" covered until his death, so I am happy to have them both.
