- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2005Season 8 divulges itself as being one of the most "intense" seasons for the series and will bring tears to most fans. Most of the original characters left the show, Mary and Adam leave in the first episode, never to be seen again. Johnothan Garvey (Merlin Olesen) is strangely absent from the entire series and there is not a mention of him throughout the series. Nellie Olesen was replaced by "Nancy" and although the olsens, the Ingalls and Laura and Almonzo are still around, there is a whole new breed of characters. Victor French, not surprisingly comes back for some of the episodes. His family, bascially erased from the storyline, moved on without him as he couldn't "deal with the death of his son." Dabbs Greer (Revenrend Alden) is probably only in about 2 episodes during this season as his character seems to be out of the mix. Katheran McGreggor (Mrs. Olsen) is also around for one last stay, as I think she's gone from future seaons. Dr. Baker, Willie, Laura, Almonzo, Eliza Jane all are here too, but enjoy them now as most will be gone later...Laura and Almonzo (are the exceptions)
Amazingly though, Season 8 is one of my favorite seasons even with the loss of some big name characters. This season focuses on more "sadness, death, and overall morbidity as you will be crying for most of them". Flu Epidemics, Charles and Mr.Edwards seeking revenge, Laura and Almonzo losing their home to a Tornado, Almonzo suffers a stroke, Charles Ingalls son getting shot in a bank robbery, the loss of Mr. Edwards son (John Jr.) in a horrible accident that causes him to become a raging alcoholic and then eventually loses his family in the process. The final 2 hour episode "He was only 12" was one of Michael Landon's best performances as Charles Ingalls. The gutwrenching concluion of a much needed miracle to save his son's (James) life is terrific entertainment as this is Michael Landon's last stay with with the series with a few exceptions of a few cameos in future episodes. Morbid? yes... series losing steam? No way.
This series is a must have, as Season 8 is really not been televised as much as the others due to it's, well, "content". It's a very somber season, and although it ends with a happy bang, the thought of the "Michael Landon" finally leaving the show along with his wife (Karen Grassle) is a sad idea, but it's true. This is it fans! Enjoy them now, because they will be sorely missed as the future seasons just aren't the same without them.
The box set includes interviews with Dean Butler (Almonzo) and Dabbs Greer (Reverend Alden). It's nice having the interviews, but the annoying interviewer just seems to ask the most basic of questions for the chracters and it's far to short to boot. Oh well, it's still nice to see these guys, Dabbs Greer is still alive and kickin!
Michael Landon made the series what it is today and even after eight seasons, it just continues to get better and this season is no exception. Enjoy this season, as some serious changes are up and coming for Season 9.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2008anybody who tuned in to watch Little House on the Prairie throughout the original series run would be quick to notice the big changes that took place as Season 7 transitioned into Season 8. At the end of Season 7, we saw the final departure of Merlin Olsen (Jonathan Garvey) and Patrick Labyorteaux (Andrew Garvey) from the series and the introduction of Missy Francis (Cassandra Cooper) and Jason Bateman (James Cooper) as series regulars. At the start of this season, we discover these two newcomers have joined Albert as adopted Ingalls children.
But, that's not the long-and-short of the changes. We also witness the departure of Melissa Sue Anderson (Mary), Linwood Boomer (Adam), Allison Arngrim (Nellie) and Steve Tracy (Percival) from the series cast. In their absence, we're first introduced to Allison Balson as Nancy, the vicious Oleson adoptee who takes Nellie's loathsome, underhanded antics to a new, all-time low. At least, Willie Oleson (Jonathan Gilbert) is beginning to change and mature and aids the Wilders, Ingalls kids and other students in showing Nancy what's what.
Not only that, but we're graced near the end of the season with the return of Victor French as Laura's dear montain-man companion, Isaiah Edwards.
Many people know that much of the Little House television series was of Michael Landon's invention, as opposed to being derived directly from the books or Laura Ingalls Wilder's biographies. (For instance, Charles & Caroline never adopted any children.) However, this season includes a compacting of tragic turns that in reality did affected Almonzo & Laura's lives. These events included Almonzo contracting diptheria and suffering a stroke, the destruction of their farm and crops from a vicious hailstorm and a tornado that shook the Wilder house to pieces. According to the bonus interview with Dean Butler (Almonzo), these tragedies occurred, but respectively to each other, not in one fell swoop, as depicted on the show.
Side note: Jason Bateman's older sister, Justine was a star of the 80's television series, Family Ties with Michael J. Fox. Fox would later star in the 1985 comedy Teen Wolf, and Jason would take the leading role in its sequel, Teen Wolf Too. (It's only a coincidence that Little House series creator Michael Landon's first taste of fame was as the star in 1957's I Was a Teenage Werewolf.)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2005One needs to get used to the (at least temporary) departure of some caracters and the arrivals of others in this 8th Season ("The reincarnation of Nelly"). Even if the principles of the show remain the same as in the other seasons, one may nevertheless recognize a preference for the following topics:
-Love and family are more important than richness and fame ("Growing Pains", "The wave of the future", "The legacy", "Uncle Jed")
- real friendship and compassion ("A promise to keep", "stone soup", "A faraway cry")
- pride, suffering, prejudice and disappointment are a part of our human condition ("Gambini the Great", "Dark sage", "Chicago", "Days of sunshine, days of shadow", "Second chance" "No beast so fierce")
- but there is also fun ("The legend of Black Jake" "A Christmas they never forgot")
- and it is so precious to be (and stay) oneself ("A wiser heart", "For the love of Nancy")
and, last but not least, FAITH ("He was only twelve").
To resume, one can say that Season 8 is another season of Little House on the Prairie full of love, hope, joy and that shows us what is really important in our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little House on the Prairie
What show could be better for your kids than Little House on the Prairie. I have been collecting the series for my 11 year old daughter for the last few years. On a miserable rainy or snowy day we curl up on the couch together and watch hour after hour. It makes me cry. It teaches them good morals and good family values. Not to mention a little reality check how hard life use to be. My daughter wants to be Laura Ingals. We need more shows like this.
Thank you Amazon for such great service. I usually receive my products within a week and in suberb shape.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST SEE
I grew up watching Little house and had forgotten how good they were. I now have all the Little house on the prairie dvd's and would not sell them for anything. This is a real nostalgic look back at 70's tv and has some very good heart warming stories. My wife and I have had many hours of self indulgent tv fun watching these. These are somewhat educational too when you realise these are based on true stories from the pen of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
