- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2006La Boheme is certainly one of the top three performed Operas worldwide, along with Carmen and Aida. It is not my favorite Puccini Opera; that distinction goes to Manon Lescaut which, as opera critic Irving Kolodin so perfectly phrased it, is "the most of the promise, with the least cost of the fulfillment." I don't begrudge Puccini his popularity: his music is often beautiful, the emotions direct and heartfelt. His librettos seem designed to tug the heartstrings in a plebian grab for popularity, like a television show tested by a focus group. But that's OK. So when I see a production of any of Puccini's most popular operas, I tend to concentrate on sound: the beauty of the instrumental music, the vocal qualities of the singers. I usually ignore the plot. A misguided fear of being manipulated by a master? Probably. I'm weird that way!
So when I say I loved this DVD of La Boheme, that I was engrossed by the drama as well as the music, then it must be something special. The Met usually mounts traditional productions. When they stray from that conservative path, the audience tends to get ornery. This Boheme is a classic production: no "artistic license" shifting the action to the surface of Mars with a cast of farm animals and an orchestra of kazoos! I like a traditional Boheme, the way Puccini envisioned it. The emotions are less over-the-top, the drama more organic. The libretto is direct, even simple. That simplicity is the source of this production's excellence.
Produced live on 15 March 1977 and the inaugural telecast of the PBS "Live at the Met" series, the DVD transfer effectively reduces many of the artifacts inherent to a 30 year old taped program. The image is still a little fuzzier than we're now used to, but not enough to drive you screaming up the wall. The DTS 5.1 sound is clear and full. As for the singing, both Pavarotti as Rodolfo and Renata Scotto as Mimi are at their absolute peak!
This Boheme features a sublimely sung Rodolfo. All of the things Pavarotti was famous for are in evidence here: crystalline tone, perfect diction, fluidity of vocal quality. And this younger, svelter Pavarotti actually acts! I was moved by his performance in a part he obviously identifies with. As for Scotto, a leading soprano at the Met for two decades, her singing is lovely, with a limpid quality that heightens the emotionalism of her superb acting. The excellent cast includes Maralin Niska as Musetta and Ingvar Wixell as Marcello.
James Levine had come into his own as a Conductor around this time. He offers a nearly perfect rendition of this verdant score. The Met Orchestra, obviously on the rise as one of the world's great ensembles, sounds wonderful. Watching them hang on Levine's every gesture, turning on a dime as they negotiate every twist and turn of this score, is one of the pleasures unique to the DVD format. As for the production design by Fabrizio Melano, it is simple and direct. It just looks right!
I don't know if my atitude towards Puccini as a dramatist will ever change. But productions like this one, saved for posterity, are a clue as to why audiences adored Puccini in the first place. Before time and popularity seemed to cheapen the drama until it resembled a High School production of Cats. I love Puccini just like everyone does, of course. It's just that every now and again I need to be reminded why I love him. I strongly recommend this superb DVD. It's the jolt you need to get you in touch with your inner Rodolfo and Mimi.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2014Finally, Deutsche Grammophon has released a masterfully restored version of this stunning performance. This features restored video, remastered audio with options for stereo or 5.1 surround, choices of subtitles in six languages, and the BTS featurette. If you have the 1999 Pioneer release, this is a fabulous upgrade.
This was filmed live at the 16 Jan 1982 performance for a MET telecast and features an all-star cast, led by the amazing Teresa Stratas. The film shows the sometimes inadequate lighting, due to the non-studio sets. However, this DVD has restored it and given it a much clearer and detailed picture. The sound is remastered beautifully and features a crisp 5.1 channel as well as a stereo option. The sound is much, much sharper and has more depth than the previous DVD version.
One of the largest differences for me was the option of choosing or removing subtitles. The older disc has permanent English titles, which was not my choice. This one gives you the option of six different languages or simply having no subtitles at all. Fabulous!
This new version also features the featurette, "Zefferelli on La Boheme". Although the Pioneer DVD said that it was included, it wasn't. You could only see it on the VHS tape. The featurette is about 20 minutes long, I think and show the set being assembled on stage and Mr. Zefferelli directing the singers in a few scenes. Very fun and informative as well as providing a nice glimpse behind-the-scenes. This DVD comes with a nice booklet that gives you an overview of each chapter and tells you about the production.
All in all, this is a fabulous version, worth adding to your collection or upgrading from the previous edition. Carreras and Stratas give excellent performances as Mimi and Rodolfo, emotional, heartfelt, beautifully acted and sung! This is my very favorite version of Puccini's masterpiece, and one that I watch over and over. The new DVD release definitely wins praise from me and I highly recommend it for any fans of Boheme or any of the singers.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2023-------- the opera is, of course, lovely and touching . that you get a chance to put pavarotti in your file is wonderful ! being able to follow the opera in italian is one good thing, being able to follow it in english is another ! and, if you're a linguist, you can try all the other subtitle languages . . .
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2023Here is I believe, one of the top five of all performances of opera on DVD. Top-notch everything. Bring an extra hanky for your guest, should you care to share the viewing. All technical parameters are exact. Watch something that will be forever.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2013I saw a film of La Boheme with this cast a while ago and I was impressed with these performances. I didn’t buy this DVD because it wasn’t available and bought two versions of this opera, one of them directed by Zeffirelli.
Maybe Teresa Stratas doesn’t have the strongest voice if it is compared with Ana Netrebko, but she sings and acts beautifully. I have other DVD performed by her and she really retransforms herself in any character.
As usual Jose Carreras and Renata Scotto are wonderful singers’ .The rest of the cast was perfect.
Direction and scenery are outstanding like everything that is directed by Zeffirelli.
I also enjoyed the extras that are shown in this production: the rehearsal of the opera, interviews with the director and of course information about Puccini’s visits to New York.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carreras

5.0 out of 5 stars A very early (1977) video of a wonderful Boheme
Renata Scotto was on top form, as was Pavarotti. The other singers supported flawlessly. Staging not so hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars les voix

5.0 out of 5 stars DIE ALLERBSTE!
Wie schon die Kritik des Christian Science Monitor 1981 bemerkte: „The finest ‚Bohème’ production this critic ever hopes to see.“ – Dem ist nichts hinzuzufügen! Auch ich kann mir keine schönere Aufführung dieser wundervollen Oper vorstellen und bin glücklich, sie immer wieder sehen zu dürfen... Wobei natürlich die anderen schönen Inszenierungen trotzdem nicht zu kurz kommen werden.
