Product Description

Moms Mabley oversees a boarding house of down-'n-out vaudevillians who put on a show to raise the money for the rent. "Moms" and little tramp Dusty Fletcher play host to the boarding house's zany tenants.

Almost exclusively performed by an all-black cast, Boarding House Blues was made for an African-American audience and as a result, possesses a tone and spirit radically different than most films of the '40s. Still fresh and unapologetically unrefined, Boarding House Blues is an unusual musical comedy revue featuring show-stopping performances from alluring singer pianist Una Mae Carlisle, rapscallions Stump and Stumpy and the legendary "Crip" Heard-a dancer with only one leg and one arm.

Born Loretta Mary Aiken in 1894, Jackie Mabley, better known as "Moms," made a career of spinning hardship into comic gold. With her pioneering comedic forays into race relations, feminist and lesbian issues, "Moms" Mabley is best remembered for nine classic comedy albums recorded for Chess Records and her appearance in the feature film Amazing Grace (1974).

Features performances by Lucky Millinder and His Band, Una Mae Carlisle, The Berry Brothers, Bull Moose Jackson, Lewis and White, Anistine Allen, Paul Breckenridge, Stump and Stumpy, The Lee Norman Trio and "Crip" Heard.

    Good old time classic.

This movie is entertaining. This is my first time watching this movie and I am really enjoying it because it is clean, peaceful and the actors seem to enjoy performing. I would love it if it were in color and some scenes cut a portion of the heads off but otherwise its fine.

When I was growing up, I used to watch Jackie "Moms" Mabley on the variety and talk shows of the day (Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Ed Sullivan, Hollywood Palace, et al). I'm glad I never saw her raunchy X-rated nightclub act, though. In fairness, though, most comedians, with the possible exception of Bill Cosby, are much more X-rated in person than on network TV, and that included the late Bob Hope, whose double entendres could make your hair stand on end, as I heard from people who did see him in person. The late Rodney Dangerfield was the same way. If Moms Mabley were on HBO today, she could be just as vulgar as she wanted to be, and no one would blink an eye.

I saw this movie some years ago on a local PBS affiliate. I taped it off the air and recently decided to buy the DVD. While the film gets off to a slow start, the pace picks up after the first 40 minutes, with performances by, among others, dancers Stump and Stumpy, The Berry Brothers, and "Crip" Heard, singer-pianist Uma Mae Carlisle, bandleader Lucky Millinder, singers "Bull Moose" Jackson and Anistine Allen, and Moms herself, who not only performs one of her classic monologues, but also surprises everyone with her tap-dancing ability.

The picture and sound quality are pretty good, considering that this was a low-budget "race movie" made for the segregated black audiences of the day.

If you can get through the first 40 minutes, which are a little boring, the performances in the rest of the movie are quite good.

I haven’t viewed this dvd. It has a great cast from the era and should be very entertaining.

Even though Moms Mabley had a major role, it took several times for me to watch it until I watched it all the way through. Once I saw the performances, that made up for the silly beginning, which was hard to get past before.

Never laugh so hard watching a movie, as I did last night watching this movie! My husband had been talking about this movie every since he hard me laughing listening to my IPod, at Moms Mabley.

That this DVD / video is essentially unwatchable. It is a very bad copy of a old VHS tape that was unable to track. Video and audio quality are worse than a poor homemade VHS tape.

I am very unhappy with Amazon for even offering such garbage to their customers.

Not much to say about this. Expect nothing and get more. It is one of these all Afro-'American movies with very little substance. I am having few of these and enjoy them thoroughly.
