Great manuscript paper as long as you aren’t using fountain pens

Great manuscript paper as long as you aren’t using fountain pens
I’ve been using Archives manuscript paper for most of my career which tells you how impressed I am with the quality of this product. The notebook comes with pages galore, staves are nicely spaced and I actually prefer the cream color of the paper.Unfortunately, I have taken to using a fountain pen for my work as I FINALLY purchased one with a good music nib, and the one deficit of Archives is the paper is just not thick enough to keep ink from bleeding through, sometimes even staining the next blank page over! You can see what I mean with the photo I’ve attached. If, like most people, you use pencils for writing music you can’t go wrong with this brand. If you’re looking for fountain pen friendly paper though, look elsewhere.

I'm a classical composer with 2 degrees in composition and have used my fair share of sheet music. Other than the perforated "Big Book of Staff Paper", Archive's spiral bound sheet music is the best out there for several reasons:

    1. The thickness of the sheet music makes the pages sturdy and the tan color of the pages is easy on the eyes instead of bright white pages you see with other staff paper.
    2. Some spiral bound manuscript papers don't leave enough space between the spiral binding and the staff lines making it really annoying when you're trying to draw staff groups on the edges of the paper. Archives gives you plenty of space to do this with comfort. I am particularly thankful for this being left-handed.
    3. The texture of the paper is really friendly to pencils, and I never run into a problem of having to push down too hard when I'm trying to draw noteheads or worry about lead/ink bleeding/indentations.
    4. The metal spiral spine as opposed to plastic that you see on other brands is wide enough so that the paper doesn't get caught or stuck. This is helpful when you're trying to quickly turn pages or when you're reaching the middle section of the book.
    5. Recycled paper which is better for the environment.

I use archive's spiral bound products like this when I have a large project like an opera that I need to keep in one place. This paper is the best around trust me. IMPORTANT: Always get the 12-staff paper. 12 easily goes into 2, 3, 4, and 6 giving you more options in terms of ensemble size where you won't have to waste empty staves due to a hard number to divide into like with the 10-staff paper. Happy composing!

My 7-year-old daughter's violin instructor requested my daughter have onhand a manuscript notebook so that the instructor could write music for my daughter to practice. Having it in a spiralboud notebook is far better than loose pieces of blank staves.

The book is 64-pages, which is a nice amount because by the time my daughter nears the end of the book, it will be fun to look at what she did in the beginning and see how far she's come.

I wasn't sure how many staves there should be (I didn't even know what a stave was), but the instructor was fine with this notebook.

The cover is sturdy enough. The page opacity is more than adequate. Overall, a very good purchase for the price.

I purchased half a dozen different types of these to check them out, and this one is pretty good. You get 64 pages, printed on both sides. There is a place on the front cover to title your score with your name, address, telephone number, and date. If you are scoring for orchestra it's a good value and it's hard to nitpick at this price. The binding is excellent- it uses a double loop system, that I personally like. I find it to be much more sturdy than a single spiral. I suppose, if someone pushed me to find issues with it, I might say that the front an back covers could be a little thicker for protection. The covers are not glossy, so if you spill a liquid, you might regret it. Personally, I like that it is not glossy.

Love this paper. The contrasting weight and darkness of the staves really help reduce eye strain after long sessions. I used to use Carta 27 but have been using this exclusively since my purchase. I still love Carta and can see me using it for different reasons down the line, for all intents and purposes Archives is a much more valuable for me and my everyday work flow. The double sided nature might throw off some peoples work flow if, for example, you like to cut up your sketches and re paste a lot, but then again you don't have to use both sides of the paper. I personally like using double sided for the temporally linear organization of sketches, and If I ever felt the need to cut and paste I would probably re engrave the motive(s) I wanted to do that with on my Carta 27 and go from there. LOVE this product.

I have used Archives paper for a long time and really like the quality of the paper. Overall a great product, a cut above most other brands. I am a fan.

A couple of minor quibbles about this particular format though: 1) the spiral binding has a design flaw where, after using it for awhile, the back cover starts to slide off. It is possible to put it back in place, but if you close the book, it will begin the process of sliding off again. This tends to repeat until you give up and have a book without the back cover.

    2) If you like to back up you work by photocopying it, be aware that this paper is slightly larger than the standard 8 1/2 x 11. Not a bad thing, but when photocopying you need to be very careful placing the paper or you'll loose the top or bottom, or you'll lose the left or right margin, in the copy. NOT an issue if you don't back up your work in this way.

As an orchestra/band composer and arranger as well as a songwriter for a band with multiple horns, guitar, bass, and keyboard, I struggled to find a manuscript book that could handle everything I threw at it. 18 staves is just enough for me to comfortably fit two systems of my eight-piece band (keyboard takes two staves) or a full orchestra (with room to spare in some cases). The paper is high-quality, easy to write on and erase, and doesn't tear easily, either.

I will definitely be stocking up on these at some point in the future.

I stumbled across this by accident, but this book is much better than any others I’ve seen on amazon. The spiral binding is great, and the aesthetic is nice and simple, yet still elegant. The spacing between staffs is also perfect, allows for enough space when writing music.
