Dead Ringer (DVD)
What happened to Bette Davis after What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Her career was reborn. Warner Bros. encored it with another vehicle filled with Baby Jane-like bite and menace: Dead Ringer, stylishly directed by the lady’s Now, Voyager costar Paul Henreid. Davis plays estranged identical twins. Unmarried Edith has no money, no future. Widow Margaret has fabulous wealth – all because of marriage to the man she stole from Edith years ago. Out of long-festering revenge, Edith kills Margaret and takes her place. But new friends and surroundings, a snoopy cop (Karl Malden) who was Edith’s beau and the arrival of Margaret’s secret lover (Peter Lawford) may expose her masquerade.

Hot on the heels of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Bette Davis slipped neatly into another juicy thriller. This time, instead of co-starring with Joan Crawford, she got to play opposite... herself. Dead Ringer casts Davis as a wealthy (and nasty) widow, and also as her slatternly (but good) twin sister, long estranged. When the poor sister discovers the depths of her sib's evil, she takes a dramatic step that will test her skills as a thespian. Davis's old leading man, Paul Henreid, directs this material at a leaden pace, but Davis gives such a brazen performance, she pulls it through. Plus, the moments of high trash (a red-hot poker rammed into a hand, a lethal dog attack) are easily savored. Peter Lawford's seedy playboy and Karl Malden's stolid cop fill out the key supporting roles--not that anybody else matters. This is Bette Davis's world; everybody else is just visiting. --Robert Horton
Set Contains:
The idea of including a commentary track featuring expert Bette Davis impersonator and camp maestro Charles Busch is promising, but results in surprisingly subdued byplay with Davis biographer Boze Hadleigh. (Busch's film Die, Mommie, Die! is a sort of drag commentary of its own on movies such as Dead Ringer, which plot it apes.) Also included is an interview with Hadleigh and a featurette on the Doheny Mansion, location for this and many Hollywood movies. --Robert Horton

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2023I love everything about Betty Davis and all of his movies , in this one specially she played the supposed bad twin but it was in revenge of what her twin did to her wich doesn’t justify what either of them did so maybe they were both bad to start with or greed got to them , not the 1st time Mrs Davis played her own twin , she did that also in the movie “a stolen life , wich I just watched again for like the 5th time , also I recommend you to watch other movies by Davis like What ever happened to baby Jane , with Joan Crawford, hush hush sweet Charlotte, the petrified forest, all about Eve , the letter and so so many other timeless classics in wich she absolutely was the character and played it so very well to the point that I don’t know where the actress starts or Betty Davis begins , she was absolutely remarkable and the likes of actress we will never see again. Timeless and unsurpassed.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2024If you're a fan or just a fan of older movies, then this one is a keeper. I never tire of this movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2005I never understood why performers like Bette Davis were considered legends. They belonged to that stylized school of acting that leaves no scenery unchewed, and makes one really appreciate what Marlon Brando and his generation accomplished. That being said, for camp value, DEAD RINGER, like Baby Jane and several others of the washed-up-Hollywood-actress-as-reborn-ghoul genre, is pure gold. The thought of Davis playing twin sisters (one rich and not so nice; the other, not so well off but marginally more moral), is like hitting a double jackpot at the quarter slots: 1964 split-screen technology giving us two of Bette Davis for the price of one. In this film the scenery definitely doesn't stand a chance. Toss in Karl Malden as a cop and the gentleman caller of the poorer, cocktail-lounge-owning twin, Peter Lawford as the secret love interest of the rich, recently-widowed twin, and you have 115 minutes of . . . well, you have 115 minutes of something special. Let's not worry about the plot points, but suffice it to say the film has a nice little twist at the end that makes me long for the old Hitchcock TV show, in which every episode had a little surprise at the end. Maybe I'm jaded, but every time I see certain actresses of this era (Davis, Crawford, De Havilland, et al), I can't help but visualize Carol Burnett doing one of her dead-on camp takes on these types of stars, which, of course, makes it very hard to take seriously the over-emoting Davis in this particular film. But that's the entertainment value of it all. The film is 41 years old and shows every year of its age, but what a treat to watch this with a big bowl of popcorn while simultaneously longing for this more innocent era of star-vehicle films. This one's a keeper in my collection!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2023I love this very fine Bette Davis film. It is a story she fulfilled in later years of her fine acting career. This tale represents very fine storytelling from a most seasoned and fine actress. One of her best in my opinion. There is no finer performer than Ms. Bette Davis and her performances in her later film career that is polished. Sheer perfection! Truly outstanding. A complete joy to watch over and over again.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2024Dead Ringer is one of my MOST favorites.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2021I first watched this in my teens years ago and loved "Dead Ringer". It's a tale of revenge of a sister cheated for the chance to marry the man she truly loved because of the machinations of her twin sister. It is a tale of the downsides of taking on the identity of another. Edie finds out that not only did her sister have a lover whom she had set up in an apartment in a very posh building, but that her sister and her lover were very involved in the death of the man she'd loved--and lost to her sister, Margaret. It ends up being a good old, fashioned tear-jerker with many interesting twists and turns along the way. If you like old Bette Davis movies, I think you'll enjoy "Dead Ringer".

5.0 out of 5 stars A DOUBLE DOSE OF THE GREAT BETTE DAVIS!
WOW. This dvd is a must have and I enjoyed every minute of it. This is Bette's 73rd movie! Yes 73rd! Bette plays twin sisters in 'Dead Ringer' Bette is fabulous in the dual role better than the 1946 movie she made in 1946 'A Stolen Life' where she played twin sister as well. Directed by Bette's friend Paul Henreid and Paul's daughter stars in the movie as Bette's maid. Bette plays Maggie and Edith who are reunited after 18 years and I am not going to give the plot away but this movie is a triumph for Bette Davis.
The commentary by Boze Hadleigh and Charles Busch is entertaining and informative. Other special features include the trailer of the film with Peter Lawford, scenes at the Doheny mansion and Boze Hadleigh also discusses the film. 81 year old Estelle Winwood plays Bette's distant relative Donnanna. She is also an amzing actress in the film.
I don't want to say anymore because if you haven't seen this rare movie, you will love it instantly.
