- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2015I think the whole subject is fascinating. I am an agnostic with a degree in physical anthropology, so when Intelligent Design surfaced in the media several years ago, I had the same knee jerk reaction that a lot of other non-religious people had. Honestly, I wrote it off without even listening to the argument. I only recently stumbled on to the topic because of my interest in learning more about recent DNA discoveries relating to heath and disease. Through this I stumbled on to Dr. Meyers book, The Signature in the Cell. (I had never heard of him before, and I had completely forgotten about Intelligent Design). This documentary did an excellent job of providing the visuals to the workings of the complex DNA/cell system that Dr. Meyers describes in his book (which had almost TOO much information). It also does an excellent job of explaining the reasoning behind the theory, and the theory itself.
I was surprised to discover is that this theory is not mutually exclusive to evolution. After studying physical anthropology, and seeing the evidence in the fossil record, it is undeniable (to me) that life has evolved in this world. BUT, evolution brings absolutely nothing to the table regarding the origins of life itself, it never has, so I am not clear why the two points (ID and evolution) are argued in the same breath or why scientist feel like evolution is being attacked here.
For something to evolve biologically, it needs to self replicate, this is a fact. What this documentary illustrates is that in order for a cell to self-replicate, the mechanisms for biological self-replication need to be in place, including the blueprints, its DNA. Once you get a grasp of just how complex a cell and its DNA really are, it really makes you question whether this process could have possibly occurred spontaneously as the current "acceptable" origin of life theories suggest. Using computer graphics, this film, does a very good job of explaining this and the reasoning behind the idea that there could somehow be an intelligence behind it. They dont say, or even suggest what this intelligence might be...god, aliens, panspermia...that doesnt seem to be the point, only that some kind of intelligence could involved with the origins of life. Its a plausible explanation and as far as I can tell, its a solid theory. Until someone disproves it, it seems just as likely as any of the "something-out-of-nothing" theories out there.
It is too bad that this theory has had such a smear campaign, and I am sorry that I, too bought into it at the time. Granted, I am new to the argument, but Ive been sort of binge reading/watching about it lately, and nowhere have I gotten the idea that the scientists behind it are peddling religion, or particular ideas about "god" or "creationism". I don't see any evidence that there is religious agenda from the scientists here at all...except maybe from what I saw in the documentary Expelled, where, ironically, mainstream (and anti-ID) scientists ferociously champion Atheism (they seem to defend it like its a religion). They come across as being as closed-minded and dogmatic as they come. I do not understand what freaks them out so much about it, but there has got to be a self-serving reason for it..."Me think they doth protest too much"!
I'm not religious, I never have been. I dont look at ID as proof that there is a God any more than I look at evolution as proof that there isnt. Instead, I think its an extremely interesting idea that opens up a lot of possibilities and even inspires the imagination (it even inspired me to write my first Amazon review!) I am surprised at how vehemently its been written off be mainstream scientists. Sure this theory hasnt been proven, but what origin of life theory has been proven?
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2024Excellently done ... a must watch.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2021Simply excellent & beautifully done. A top-notch look at how modern science & our knowledge of the cell & its DNA molecule make evolution look so outdated & unattainable. I really think Darwin would agree if he had been able to understand the complexity of a single cell & how it worked.
This is not religion, but, science. The fellows in this DVD were only searching & looking at the evidence. Science has made such great strides in the last few decades & Darwin did not have this knowledge or these tools (powerful microscopes, etc.) that are now available to scientists.
This DVD was made for the average person to understand & it is not difficult. It easily presents a full view of just how complex
even a single cell can be & why it makes evolution seem, almost, ridiculous.
This DVD is so well done & I am very thankful that it is available. Watch it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2023This is not a ‘religious’ video but a ‘scientific’ documentary It explains the science & the biology of life. These scientists explain why they are reconsidering their points of view on the origin of life.
I’ve watched it a dozen times over the past few years and learn more every time.
I have also encourage many people to watch it whether the believe in creation or evolution.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2014The product was exactly as described. If I were to criticize it, I would describe it as a tad too advanced for general consumption, but
I don't see how one could water it down in a 60 minute presentation. It definitely is presented for a college educated consumer. I was
especially impressed by the credentialed scientists, and the absence of overt religious content in their views, though I am not opposed
to those positions in any respect. The production should appeal to "critical thinkers" in addition to agenda-driven viewers, and in this
respect, the product delivers. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2022This is the most thorough, conclusive, comprehensive, convincing, and irrefutable study of creationism I have ever seen. One simply cannot objectively consider the information presented here and come away without acknowledging the existence of an intelligent Designer and Creator. The only possible reason for rejecting this perspective is that one loves darkness and evil more than light and truth...it's that simple!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2010True science follows the evidence without preconception always searching for the truth. After viewing this DVD, one would wonder how anyone could arrive at any conclusion other than that the things around us have been created by an intelligence. Of course it is next to impossible to divorce our personal and cultural biases from any investigative endeavor. The producers of this DVD have assiduously striven to avoid use of the "G" word. Fair enough. Religion has done more to dishonor and misrepresent God than any other institution in the history of humankind, so they have lost all right to honorable mention. However, if we were to enter an investigation into the nature of life without any preconceptions either for or against a God, or conversely, for or against random chance, where would the evidence leads us? That is the question that this DVD very effectively answers.
