Five years after Godzilla(r) terrorized the city of Osaka, Japanese scientists have developed a sure-fire way to finally destroy Japan's monster nemesis. They have created the world's first man-made black hole, which will trap Godzilla(r) for eternity! But during a testing of this new Dimension Tide, an insect caught in the hole mutates, producing gargantuan eggs that give birth to a new menace : giant dragonfly monsters called Meganula . Meganula queen, the 50-meter Megaguirus , is also on a hunt for Godzilla(r), needing to steal his energy to survive. From the sky down to the depths of a city'sunderground sewer tunnels, Megaguirus , Godzilla(r), and humankind battle for supremacy. Who will prevail in this high-tech, three-way battle of terror and destruction?

This second film in the unofficial "Godzilla Millennium" series (which followed its return to features in Godzilla 2000) occasionally suffers from dodgy special effects, but the giant lizard puts on enough of a show to please his longtime fans. The premise involves a special anti-Godzilla team's efforts to rid Japan of the atomic menace by means of Dimension Tide, a satellite device that would create an artificial black hole in which to trap the monster. A failed attempt, however, mutates a common dragonfly into a horde of giant prehistoric bugs that evolve into the colossal Megaguirus; the pair naturally face off in a city-wrecking battle while the team works against the clock to repair Dimension Tide and hold Godzilla captive forever. Though his special effects team occasionally lets him down with some shoddy creations (especially the pre-Megaguirus dragonfly swarm), director Maasaki Tezuka (who has since helmed the majority of subsequent Godzilla films) delivers a fun and action-packed feature with an exciting final showdown that should please G-fans. Columbia-Tri-Star's DVD is widescreen and offers a welcome Japanese language track (with English subtitles) for those opposed to dubbing as well as Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. A brace of trailers for other Sony-related sci-fi titles is also included. --Paul Gaita

- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2003Gojira (Godzilla) has a long film history, stretching back almost 50 years now. In that time he's been everything from the star of campy kiddie movies to a dark manifestation of anger and hatred.
The original concept of Gojira was that he was a representative of the forces of nature, neither truly good nor truly evil; he was like a living tsunami, earthquake, hurricane, volcano (all forces that Japan is intimately familiar with) rolled into one. The monsters he fights are often representatives of other forces -- technology (Mechagojira, Mogera), man's tampering with forces of nature (Biollante, King Ghidora), and forces from Elsewhere (Space Gojira, the original Ghidora, Megagiras).
Megagiras presents us with some of the best of the new approaches. We have a new and interesting opponent (Megagiras reminds me in approach of Legion from Gamera 2; first it comes in swarms, then it becomes something really BIG). We have human involvement (and reasons for why Gojira bothers to come to Japan so often). We have an AMAZINGLY cool new soundtrack (the new Gojira theme is the first worthy successor to Ikufube's original). We have the effective new design for Gojira; and we have what may be the absolute coolest and impressive new superweapon ever shown on screen, the Dimensional Tide Cannon.
Like most Gojira movies, the plot is fairly straightforward, running on two separate tracks: first is the attempt by human beings to create a weapon which can destroy Gojira so he won't be a menace to us any more, and second is the emergence of the threat of Megagiras -- which was started by an unexpected side-effect of the new weapon under development.
The main female lead is very cool, driven by a prior encounter with Gojira-sama; she's the main action hero, while the primary male lead is the lab geek trying to win her favor. She's pretty, tough, and competent, and fun to watch in action. The combat scenes are very well done, and how Gojira deals with an opponent who appears to completely outclass him through speed is just plain fun.
The special effects are very good for a modern Goji film, with the Dimensional Tide deserving its own special mention.
If you're a fan of monster movies, and Gojira in particular, get this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2010"Godzilla vs. Megaguirus" is not only one of the best films of the Godzilla "Millenium" era...but one of the best films in the entire series! Even casual fans of the giant lizard should enjoy this entry!
The basic story is that Japan has created a special unit to deal with the Godzilla threat, the G Graspers. They are working on a new weapon which will create a miniature black hole that will trap Godzilla forever, unfortunately when they test it a wormhole is created which allows a giant dragonfly through just long enough to lay an egg. Of course the egg manages to hatch releasing hundreds of these aggressive dragonflies into Japan.
"Godzilla vs. Megaguirus" features some of the best special effects of the entire series. the Meganulon (the first stage of the dragonfly things) are downright creepy! Part cockroach, part scorpion and part dragonfly...they are an insect-phobes worst nightmare. Godzilla looks amazing as well, and the miniatures have never looked better. The music is awesome composed by Godzilla newcomer Michiru Oshima who also scores the later entry "Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla".
This is a great entry in the series, and one well worth picking up if you are a collector...and one well worth viewing if simply a fan.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2013The Tristar releases of the Millennium Godzilla series, after Godzilla 2000, are all the original films in Japanese with English and French subtitles available. It also has the international English Dub that Toho has done for international release, which is a more of a direct translation so the dialogue is a little clunky. So it is not an American release like Godzilla 2000 was, where they recut the movie to quicken the pace, added pumped up sound effects, and then added American English dubs for a more natural sounding dialog and less confusion on things that don't translate well. This is because the rest of the Millenium series did not receive an American release in theaters.
This movie ignores Godzilla 2000, and only references the original Godzilla retconned to the new suit by cgi and Godzilla's death by the oxygen destroyer. The American Godzilla movie is referenced too, so that is apparently part of this 3 movie universe. I love seeing Meganulon returning and getting to see what they would turn into had Rodan not gobbled them up in his first movie. I wished they had showed more people getting gobbled up by the Meganulon, instead of just hinting at it after showing a couple getting munched. Overall a fun Godzilla romp.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2012Any Godzilla film has be rated in its own system. When i give it 5 stars, i am not comparing this to a great film by normal standards. however, i have to say the is the coolest film in the series I have seen in a long time. I grew up watching the originals (PRE 1980) films. In recent years i have gone back and rewatched. The remakes and reboots since 1985 have been mildly entertaining but rarely hold my attention.
Somehow the fishing line / wires visible on the large flying beast is forgivable for humor factor. In so many ways you see Mortha and Rodan slammed together with an injection of steroids.
The black hole weapon was fascinating. Somehow, based on the Universe and Quantum Physics TV shows I have recently seen, you almost believe this weapon could exist in the near future.
The final fight scene is the best in decades. It maybe seems primitive, but this franchise is better served by miniatures and rubber suits than CGI. Surrealism is its calling card.
Fans of the series will love this movie. If you do not love past Godzilla movies, or just find this not to be your thing, this movie will not change your mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bild & Ton 100%
