This is the best "death metal" album I have listened to thus far. The reason I put death metal in quotes is because I hesitate to call this album death metal. I've yet to hear a death metal album with this much atmosphere and feeling. To me black metal isn't just about a specific sound but a certain "spirit" the music has, and this album definitely has the black metal "spirit". If this is death metal, it's very high quality. I feel like I have just discovered a very rare wine that has been aged to perfection. The guitar riffs are mesmerizing and head bang worthy. The drumming is awesome and the solos...the solos are amazing! Good audible bass as well. Very inspirational album for an aspiring black metal musician like myself. I've been on a bit of a death metal binge lately, but I'll definitely be listening to more black metal in the future. I can't wait to listen to Darkthrone's other albums. I can already tell that this is a kick ass band. Highly recommended.

    **UPDATE**

Upon listening to "A Blaze In The Northern Sky" I can now hear the huge difference between the two albums. This is definitely death metal. I guess I was just so used to listening to the brutal stuff lately that I was kind of taken a back by the sheer atmosphere of this album. I still say this is a very good quality album and better than most death metal, but it still is death metal.

Everybody knows Darkthrone, easily the most innovative and inspiration band in black metal. But they have quite an interesting career trajectory, as before they were black metal, they played death metal - on their debut, this album "Soulside Journey". It's far from the band's most popular album, and it's not hard to see why...it's a totally different thing from anything else they ever did. Whereas later Darkthrone prided itself on concise, at times minimalistic songwriting with raw production and relatively simple musicianship, this album shows the band with a lot more clear production, with very intricate song-structures and, at times, very technical riffing. The album is loaded with lots of catchy, ear-worm riffs that are totally unforgettable, and some very clever and original ideas and melodies take hold in a few parts (along with the amazing Fenriz lyrics), but it does take a few listens to really "sink in", and capture the groove and essence behind everything. Overall, I'd rate this as one of Darkthrone's best ever albums, though I like the next few albums after this...I do think it would be interesting to hear Darkthrone, if they continued in this direction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Les débuts death metal de ... Darkthrone
Reviewed in France on April 6, 2020

    (6/10).
