- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2013I'll probably wrankle a few feathers with this, but I consider Bill Monroe the father of the genre of music called "bluegrass." His style of hard-driving songs sung up high were the epitome of the type of music that denotes bluegrass. This collection of music has not only songs that most of us know, but also some of his instrumental works. Either way, this is a fantastic collection. If you're into bluegrass and you'd like a sampling of Bill Monroe, this anthology is just the ticket! You'll find a wide sampling of Monroe's works on this collection, so I don't think you'll be bored by it. All the performers in this collection are creme de la creme, regardless of whatever instrument they're playing. This is a very worthwhile collection of Bill Monroe's works, and I'm sure you'll love it as much as I do.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2014I'm not a huge bluegrass fan, but a lot of modern music I love has been inspired by bluegrass. I thought I would compliment my CD library with a person known as "The Father of Bluegrass". I like to try and keep things simple and for me that means starting at the beginning. By knowing where something came from it's easier to see how it got here. This is a simple album by a complex artist doing what he did best.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2019Always liked Bluegrass, and have always heard Bill Monroe was the Father of Bluegrass, so I figured I'd get me a good listen to his music. Great music, and Bill Monroe's voice really adds to that great Bluegrass sound. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2015Bill Monroe in my book will always be the best Bluegrass Gospel and Bluegrass Country music singer of them all . Not to say that there is not other good Bluegrass and Country music Artists , because there was plenty of them in the past and they have passed away , but there music lives on because of wonderful people such as your self . Thank you .
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2015This two-disc anthology contains most of the recordings Bill Monroe made for Decca after he left Columbia and joined the label in 1950. The album covers the rest of Monroe's career, and includes the strange last recording he made in 1981, "My Last Days on Earth." It's a strange arrangement, with the mandolin sounding more like a Greek bazouki. If you're a fan of traditional bluegrass, you'll love some of the numbers on this album like "Midnight on the Stormy Deep," which feature Monroe's "high lonesome" harmonies. But many of the songs, some of them Monroe standards, have a glossy quality, sparked I think by Decca's a&r people who seem to have pushed Monroe toward a more commercially smooth sound.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2015Major League music! Am liking this a lot. If you like bluegrass music, and if you like Bill Monroe's style, you will like this album/collection of songs. I plug in my phone into the aux port on my car's radio and press play. With the volume up enough to shake the rear view mirror, well, you get the idea that I really like it!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2013I'm not sure just quite what Y'all want to hear. The CD arrived in a timely manner and in perfect shape. You can't go wrong with Bill Monroe or for the most part, any Bluegrass music.
And of course, Y'all can't go wrong with AMAZON.COM. I really enjoy shopping with them and ordering from them. It's even simple for an old fart like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill Monroe Anthology CD

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction To Bill Munroe's Classic Bluegrass
I recently read a comment attributed to Steve Earle which basically quoted Earle as saying that Bill Monroe was one of the most influential bluegrass musicians in the history of that music and anyone interested in that music had to listen to Bill Monroe in order to understand how extensive his influence on bluegrass music was.
I wasn't familiar with Bill Munroe's recordings when I read that comment so I decided to check out his music. When I looked up Monroe on Amazon, this 2CD coopilation seemed the most economical way of checking out Bill Monroe's music; so I ordered this one knowing nothing about Bill Monroe.
This turned out to be a great CD set. This compilation covers Monroe's career with Decca Records from 1950 to 1981 and is filled with classic bluegrass. After hearing this album I can readily appreciate how influential Munroe was, and still is, in bluegrass music.
This set is a really good introduction to Bill Monroe's music. If you like bluegrass, this 2CD set should be in your music collection. Highly recommended!
As a piece of music trivia, John Baldry's It Ain't Easy album, released in 1971, has vocalist Maggie Bell singing the lyric, "In the pines, In the pines, Where the sun nevers shines..........". I've had Baldry's It Ain't Easy album since it was first released but I'd never considered the source of that particlular lyric until I listened to this Bill Monroe album for the first time and heard his version of the song "In The Pines", which is actually an old Leadbelly number. That lyric on the John Baldry album is taken from Leadbelly's "In The Pines", which Bill Monroe covers on this album. Who knew?

5.0 out of 5 stars
