Product Description
Ahoy, mateys! Come aboard the good ship Hispaniola and set sail in search of buried treasure in one of Disney's most critically acclaimed adventure classics -- presented in its original, uncut theatrical version! In his first all-live-action feature, Walt Disney has vividly brought to life Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless tale of buccaneers and buried gold. Authentic locales, rich color photography, and musket-roaring action set the stage for the stouthearted heroics of young Jim Hawkins (Bobby Driscoll) -- and the skullduggery of that wily, one-legged pirate of all pirates, Long John Silver. Aye, for the kind of excitement that only treasure and treachery can bring, there's no better destination than TREASURE ISLAND!|The movie was filmed in England where Disney had "frozen" pounds following World War II -- that is, film revenue that couldn't be spent outside of England.|To create authenticity, the filmmakers used numerous "glass shots" in which an artificial background and extension were painted onto glass in front of the camera lens, creating amazingly realistic results.|Three camera crews worked on the film: one shooting out on the ocean, one shooting exteriors, and one shooting interiors in the studio.|Because young star Bobby Driscoll -- the only American in the film -- didn't have an extended work permit, director Byron Haskin had to film all of his scenes first and complete the rest of the film without him.|Violence in the film -- including a stabbing and two shootings -- initially earned the 1950 release a PG rating. To earn a G rating, the scenes were cut out for the film's 1975 re-release.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2016This is the first version of Treasure Island on film that I saw and to me it is the classic that all others are measured up to. As per the norm, if you have read the book it diverges from the book; but for the most part it does try and keep some of the basic story events there. The characters are top notch with Robert Newton just about owning the role of Long John Silver.
The story if you don't know it by now is of Young Jim Hawkins, as played by Bobby Driscoll, gets a hold of a map of Treasure Island where all the gold and riches of a famous pirate was buried. He tells the master of the bit of land his family's inn was located on. Then under the guidance of Long John Silver learns a bit of sailing. A mutiny occurs when the ship arrives at the island because Long John is the long missing quartermaster of the famous pirate and wants the treasure for himself as well as half of the mutinous dogs that had made up rest of the crew. A bit of fighting and digging and the riches are found, pirates are defeated and Jim Hawkins goes home a little bit wiser and richer for both the adventure as well for the riches that were recovered.
This is well worth it if you have kids that are old enough to deal with some of the action scenes and some of the violence, not much and not much blood since it is from the 60's and it is Disney; but still tense and dramatic at points and really for 10 and up.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2023Probably one of the most viewed versions of the timeless classic starring Robert Newton.
Helpful Tip: Possibly the benchmark against all versions of Treasure Island are judged.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2020This film, first made in England in 1950, has survived 70 years of viewing extremely well. The acting and action are great. This is one of the finest live-action Disney films ever made. The scenery is great and the color is bright and bold and seems brand new on the current DVD version. The film is perfect as a grand experience for viewers who desire lots of action and fun along the way. "Treasure Island" is a must have DVD for Disney fans. Robert Newton is splendid as Long John Silver. Bobby Driscoll is a fitting Jim Hawkins. This film makes a nice companion entertainment to enjoy before or after watching the Disney film version of the "Swiss Family Robinson."
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2021I am supposed to be reading the book for book club. I got a jump start by watching the movie. Our book club is part is a Toastmaster's club. I volunteered to speak about the book. I am preparing for a speech about leadership styles....goodness knows there were a plethora of different leaders. I learned this by watching the movie. I chuckle every time I think of the speech's ending that John Silver is the leader I'm selecting for a specific mission as he demonstrated his strength as a leader...he went on to found a famous restaurant...Long John Silver.

5.0 out of 5 stars La quintessenza dell'essere pirati
Imperdibile
