Swing Kids is a 1993 American dramatic film directed by Thomas Carter and starring Christian Bale, Robert Sean Leonard and Frank Whaley. In pre-World War II Germany, two high school students, Peter Müller and Thomas Berger, attempt to be swing kids by night and Hitler Youth by day, a decision that acutely impacts their friends and families.

Robert Leonard has always been one of those actors that I don't have strong feelings towards - I've just never really thought of his acting particularly as amazing or mediocre. With that said, this movie has completely changed my opinion of him. His performance in this movie is nothing short of dynamic, and his representation of a youth struggling between their identity as a swing kid and their obligation to a nationlist party is nothing short of authentic. His performance in addition to Christian Bale’s - which may also be one of my favorite performances of his - draws an emotional connection from the audience that is impactful and naturally engaging.

Given the subject matter I was curious to know how the two “forces” at play would be pitted against one another; would this be a matter of representing individuals as being right or wrong, or would there be some ambiguity left for the audience to play with? The character relationships and their ideologies change over time as a plot develops, and this is done in a way that is both logical and contextually appropriate. The horrors portrayed and ordered by the Nazi party are bluntly reproduced, but ‘Swing Kids’ is careful to show why joining their party at the time was considered admirable or in some ways acceptable. More than (and addition to) that, the fear that drives some characters to conform and join this nationalist movement is also given enough gravity so as to make different people's motivations (that more-or-less could be considered “good” reasons) well understood and easier to empathize with.

Without giving too much away, I was worried at first that the ending would be too optimistic; Not only was the conclusion very realistic, but viewers should keep in mind that this film is rather graphic in regards to showing the violence that many people during this historical period were subjected to. It would be fair to say that watching this can make someone uncomfortable, but this is a well-researched film that captures the totality of the Nazi influence rather well in a way that isn't facetious, inappropriate, or inaccurate.

It goes without saying, but the soundtrack and film score in this piece is absolutely phenomenal as well; the spirit of the ‘Swing Kids’ is unwavering and steadfast - so, it only follows that the music would be as well.

Handles a difficult subject with the utmost respect while being simultaneously entertaining.
    Would highly recommend!

This movie does what so many shallow movies do not; the characters grow and change, and the slow process of the methods of how the Nazis turned normal young men into "their own" is wonderfully portrayed. It is a dark subject told with enough wonderful music of the swing era to make the darkness of the times bearable to watch. If you ever wondered how the young, fun-loving, German teens became people without any feelings for their fellow man this will show you. A truly great movie on many levels. It deserves much more mention and notice. Wonderfully, and beautifully done, by some people who really cared to tell the tale so we pay attention to a part of history we've mostly never known.

My 16 year old granddaughter and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. It was an eye opener for her to learn how war affects daily life...especially for teens.

Superb acting and constant action throughout this edge-of-your-seat movie.
It happened. It is happening again - in several countries - wherever good people get complacent or confused.
Please do not get hung up on the name of the group. Dictators come from all political leanings - from the Left and the Right.
Any group of people seeking complete and absolute control of a territory; with its normal wide variety of citizens,
will use any means possible to take control of those citizens - for their OWN gain. They begin by finding scapegoats, whom they blame for any problem - real or imagined. They give you Free stuff if only you will align with them and do what they tell you.
The psychological techniques used in this movie; are being used now, around the world - Hong Kong, North Korea, Venezuela, Iran, Iraq, North Africa, Mexico, Europe and the United States.
We have to live in this world; so we better be able to sort out propaganda, hyperbole, and false promises from truth.
Nothing in life is Free. There are no shortcuts to success. Individual Success comes only after hard work. If someone is offering you something for Free - they want something in return - your freedoms.
History endlessly repeats itself until survivors and their offspring learn the lessons. Evil will always exist and perpetuate death, violence and suffering until good people stand together and fight totalitarian movements.
On a lighter note - the dance sequences spaced throughout the movie are breathtaking. The incredibly gifted dancers don't just move - they FLY.
This is a Must Watch family discussion movie for sure.

I learned through this film about the banning of Jazz Music in Hitler’s Germany. With older youth, loving their Big Band era jazz, they rebel against the established regulations. This film magnifies the living conditions of their era in Germany and ties their relationships together through the music they love. It is a great movie, well told with unsuspected ripples in the plot. This smaller disc supplemented my old Laser Disc with higher resolution and sound. It was great on my 85” 8K screen.

I came across this movie as part of my watching everything and actor has done. It was part of my Robert Sean Leonard filmography but I was pleasantly surprised to find Christian Bale in it. This is a heart string tugging movie about teens at the advent of World War II and the struggles between what they love doing and what is expected of them. Be prepared for tears and amazing performances by both actors that you will want to watch over and over.
