In an age when the old-timey soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou? sells 5 million copies, it's hard to imagine how revolutionary Will the Circle Be Unbroken seemed upon its release 30 years ago. The triple album (now rereleased as a two-CD set) paired many of Nashville's venerable country and bluegrass performers (Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Vassar Clements) with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, or as Acuff called them, "a bunch of long-haired West Coast boys." The idea seemed nearly as foreign as Martians setting down in Tennessee, but the Dirt Band were Colorado hippies steeped in the genre, so there was no disputing the authenticity of the music, or its earthy appeal. Aside from the sheer joy of the performances (listen to Jimmy Martin's "whoop" on "Sunny Side of the Mountain"), there's great fun in hearing Roy Acuff give the boys a lesson in doing a song right the first time (and using the word hell before launching into a religious number). And Mother Maybelle wafts through like a benevolent ghost, or at least a patron saint. One caveat: The boast of four previously unreleased tracks is balderdash, since three are really between-track conversations and rehearsals, and only "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" qualifies as a real song. But that's nitpicking. Buy it. Love it. Wallow in it. O brother, that's country music! --Alanna Nash

- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2023First we have to go back 50 years, then 50 years before that. Ken Burns 'Country Music' helped revitalize the NGDB effort to turn timeless Carter family, Bill Monroe, Stanley Bros, Jimmy Rodgers, and other standards into something future generations can relate to. I got the used 2 CD set for $5, and the remastered version is quite clear and a joy to listen to. Lucky me. Country music today owes a lot to those who want the bare-bones versions the way they were first performed. Do your ears a favor and have a listen , my friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A country music album for everyone who is not into country music.
This was my first introduction to really listening to many of the older country music artists.( Up until then I'd only liked Townes Van Zandt, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, New Riders of the Purple Sage and the Byrds.) Fast forwarding a few decades, my original album has gone the way of all my vinyl and I was delighted to find this is still the fresh, exceptional recording I remember this being.
Somehow this collaboration between the young Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and many of the older luminaries of country music seemed to lift the level of performance of all the musicians to somewhere special. The simplicity of the recording is delightful and free of the overproduction of many of the mainstream country recordings. Vassar Clements fiddling is a delight and the old timers not only give their all but also talk.
This album has a kind of uncomplicated sincerity and joy in music making that makes it unique and exceptional.
If you are not into old style country music this is one to get. It may not make you a devoted fan of the genre -it didn't make me one- but is a unique piece of musical history that is marvellous.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Classic Album
This is the absolute classic album by the Dirt Band. I have this on vinyl but wanted a more readily playable format and it did not disappoint. As the recent documentary by Ken Burns, among many other sources, would verify, the songs and many of the performers on this CD codify much of what lies at the heart of Americana Country music and sit along the baseline of the various pop forms that were to follow. From lyrics to musical trends and inventions to the poignant title tune itself, this is a classic concept album; kudos to the members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band who dreamed this up all those years ago. It still proves the circle unbroken.
