Bobby Darin was one of the most personally complex and unpredictable artists of the rock era. Indeed, it's hard to find another major artist who reinvented himself with the deceptive ease and overwhelming success chronicled on this 20-track highlight disc. After scoring three lively and considerable Top 10 successes in the space of a year in the late 1950s ("Splish Splash," "Queen of the Hop," "Dream Lover"), Darin traded in his teen idol sweater 'n' slacks for a tux and tie (evidence suggests he considered rock a passing fad!) and went gunning for Sinatra and the Rat Pack. The immediate results were the Grammy-winning No. 1 legend "Mack the Knife" (adapted from Kurt Weill's "Moritat" in The Threepenny Opera) and the enduring, French-inspired Top 10 hit "Beyond the Sea." If Darin spent the early '60s alternately goosing standards from the American songbook ("Clementine," "Bill Bailey," "Lazy River," "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby," etc.) and mending a few rock-pop fences ("Multiplication," "Things"), he still had another surprise in store. His Top 10 take on Tim Hardin's dolorous "If I Were a Carpenter" cast him all too convincingly as conscientious '60s folkie. Other highlights here include his irresistible, swinging take on the lyrically bleak "Artificial Flowers" and his successful, self-penned nods to the '60s Nashville sound, "You're the Reason I'm Living" and "18 Yellow Roses." Darin was considerably more than the first postmodern lounge Revivalist, and herein lies the evidence. --Jerry McCulley

Imagine learning when you are a young child that you are only expected to live until age 30. This was the reality Bobby Darin was forced to cope with. Even in his early teens Bobby Darin knew just what he wanted to do with his life. He craved the spotlight and realized early on that music was in his blood. Not only did he love to sing and perform before live audiences but he was also an extremely gifted songwriter and a talented musician as well. And because of his serious medical condition he was determined to make a name for himself before the age of 25. Well lo and behold Bobby Darin did just that!!

In 2002 Rhino released "The Hit Singles Collection" featuring 20 of Bobby's all-time greatest hits. What a collection! From rock and roll favorites like "Queen of the Hop" and "Splish Splash" to the sensational "Beyond The Sea" and "Mack The Knife", Bobby Darin was one of the few artists of his era who was able to appeal to teen and adult audiences alike. In fact, during his four year stint at Atco records between 1958 and 1962 Bobby Darin placed more than two dozen singles on the Billboard Hot 100. "The Hit Singles Collection" features other memorable hits like 1961's "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" and one of my personal favorites "Things" from the summer of '62. With an eye on broadening his horizons Bobby moved on to Capitol records in 1963. Rumor has it that he made the move so that he could record in the same studio where Ol' Blue Eyes made his biggest and best records. Though many of his albums at Capitol were critically acclaimed, Darin did not not achieve the commercial success he had hoped for. Nonetheless, Bobby Darin managed to have 2 Top 10 hits while at Capitol. "You're The Reason I'm Living" and "18 Yellow Roses" are both included on this disc. Times they were a-changin' and Bobby returned to Atlantic records in 1966. His recording of Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter" proved to be one of the surprise hits of that year.

"The Hit Singles Collection" includes a thoughtfully done 20 page booklet packed with photographs, an informative biography and interesting information on each of the 20 tunes in this collection. It is priced right and would be a great addition to your music collection. A great big thumbs up on this one! Highly recommended!

Yes I am one of those folks who still listens to CDs in his vehicle. This album is fantastic worth the purchase. It has all of the classic hits. Best aspect and quality (IMO) is that my two favorite Bobby Darin songs Mack the Knife and Beyond the Sea are played on tracks 6 and 7 back to back. Love it! and my elderly father really loves it as it takes him back to his youth. You cant put a price tag on that. Only down side is that remember you are dealing with tracks that are 65 years old. The sound quality is good but you may find yourself having to turn the volume up...of course that is not necessarily a bad thing. 5 star purchase. Highly recommend.

If you liked listening to Bobby Daren years ago when you were young, you'll really like this CD. All his songs that were popular when I was in my teens are on this CD and I been playing it on my car CD player everyday for the past month. There's a pamphlet included that give brief descriptions of how and when the song was written and produced which I thought was quite interesting. He started out in New York writing jingles for commercials and went on to become famous for his singing and film performances. He had to leave too soon. A shame.

This greatest hits collection by the legendary Bobby Darin is deeply personal to me; my middle name is Darin (after Bobby Darin), and my first name (Todd) rhymes with Bobby's son's name (Dodd). Anyway, up until now, I never paid any attention to Bobby Darin's music or career, even though my mother told me about where my names came from. I was truly missing out on some great music, as this collection is perfect, with a good half a dozen or so very recognizeable songs (Splish Splash, Queen of the Hop, Dream Lover, Mack the Knife, Beyond the Sea, What'd I Say, and If I Were a Carpenter). While listening to some of the other songs, I wondered if Buffalo Springfield were possibly influenced by Bobby Darin, as there are similarities in sound and vocal style. Bobby Darin left this world too soon, but not before leaving having an indelible impact on several musical genres. He was truly a versatile and diverse performer. I highly recommend this CD as a superior depiction of his career.

Listening to this Cd takes you back to those Las Vegas golden years when singers were actually good singers and entertainers didn't need flashy explosions just to hold your attention. Darin was one versatile yet mysterious singer/entertainer. He's part Sinatra, part 50's teen idol, part folk singer, part broadway and combining them all into a lounge singing showcase. I have always loved "Dream Lover" and since i'm re-discovering those classic Vegas acts I ordered it. There's novelty songs "Splish Splash", 50's be-bop "Queen of the Hop" (which sounds a lot like Stagger Lee) and "Plain Jane" (which sounds a lot like Charlie Brown or Haunted House). You've got Sinatra flavored "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea" and Broadway influenced "Bill Bailey" and "Musta been a Beautiful Baby". There's a touch of soul in "What'd i Say" but the best cuts seem to be the country/blues mix of "You're the reason i'm Living", and the folk yet full of feeling- "If I were a Carpenter" and of course the classic -"Dream Lover".
I was surprised how much "Irresistable You" and "Multiplication" sounded like Elvis movie songs and I even liked them!
You cannot put Bobby Darin in a stereotypical box and maybe that's why I like him. I understand he's not everybody's cup of tea unless you like your tea with some different flavored additives. Worth the $$$'s.

I believe Bobby Darin, had he lived, would be considered in the same company as Sinatra, Bennett, Martin, etc. He was a true entertainer. I love the way he delivers a song with his smooth voice. I love this cd.
